To explain this, we need to go back more than twenty years in time.
I never thought of myself as a writer. I am a simple, working man, just like you. But I have loved reading since I was a child. I used to devour books until I got to the stage where I knew halfway through the book how the story was going to end.
For example, I loved the “ECLIPSE OF THE CRESCENT MOON”. I am not exaggerating when I say that I have read it at least fifty times. There is probably no Hungarian who does not know this story, which tells of one of the greatest battles of medieval Europe. In all, two thousand Hungarian men, women and children fought off almost 100,000 Turkish soldiers. For 38 days, they fought back the besiegers in the most terrible conditions. Many were lost, but in the end they defeated the mighty army of Sultan Suleiman. Two thousand men who made history and their story conquered the world!

The more I read, the more I got into the story, and by the end I started to wonder what I would have done if I had been there. Or, what would a modern man like me with modern weapons have done at that time? You’ve never thought about things like that? What would you do if you could live in another time with the knowledge you have today?
That thought kept nagging at me, it kept getting in my mind, and I thought about it day after day. Finally, the outline of a novel was born in my head. The only problem was that I wasn’t a writer. Who could care what I write about? Then there was the other question. There was already a wonderful novel on this subject. What more could I say? How could I follow in Gárdonyi’s footsteps?
Then I thought about the different books that have been written about other events. And, far be it from me to insult the memory of Gárdonyi, my general knowledge is a hundred years beyond the time of the birth of “ECLIPSE OF THE CRESCENT MOON”. We know more about the siege itself, the fate of the characters, the political circumstances. In addition, I always read the surviving list of names of the castle defenders at the end of the book, but I missed their stories.
I finally made up my mind! I wrote the novel, which is a very different story from Gárdonyi’s work, but it is a faithful portrayal of historical events. Supplemented by additional information that I could weave into the story with the knowledge we have today. And I have personified many of the names that remain (perhaps too many at times), but I believe that these people deserve to have a story.

It was at that time that the ruins of a Tartar-era castle were found where I lived, and I was very interested in the history of the Tartar period. However, I could not find any fiction novels that covered all the relevant events. Have you ever come across one? Don’t be surprised if you haven’t, because it didn’t exist until now.
No fiction book has ever been written about one of Central Europe most mournful events, for which even the most optimistic estimates say that at least 30% of the Hungary population perished, so that an ordinary person can learn about every fateful event!
I felt like I could write this book, but I didn’t want to walk like with my first book without reaching anyone. So I went to the then-mayor of Göd. I offered to write a novel in which, in addition to all the main events of the Tartar invasion, the newly discovered earthen castle would also be included if the representative body agreed to publish the book.
However, the distribution was not arranged, so my book was lost in obscurity.
Once, perhaps a year after the publication, an elderly gentleman came to visit me in my home. He had driven from France to Hungary. He tracked down my address, all because a friend had sent him my book and he liked it so much that he wanted to meet the author of the novel in person. This gentleman was the grandson of Miklós Nemeskéri Kiss, an 1848 Honvéd Colonel of the same name, who was almost 80 years old and who had previously owned estates in Göd. We became very good friends and corresponded for many years.
The other interesting thing happened eight years ago, when I was approached by a film producer, who also happened to have my book, who said that this story should definitely be made into a film. Could I write the script? I immediately said sure. Although I had never seen a script before in my life!
I learned. I wrote it. It became the title Tartar Storm, and the truth is that it inspired me to change the title and some of the details of the book. The screenplay was registered under Artisjus130815001T and the casting was already done when it turned out that the promised money would not be forthcoming.

Historical fiction fans with a special interest in the Mongol era and medieval European backdrops will find a special treat in Tatar Storm —it’s the only fictional work to include all the significant events of the invasion.

This introduction injects a compelling desperation into the story from the start that draws readers while assuring that no prior familiarity with the era or Hungarian history is needed in order to thoroughly access and enjoy this vivid account: “ I shall write down all that I witnessed during this last year, when our beautiful flourishing country became filled with corpse-stinking air and littered with rotting ruins hither and yon, until the time is upon us, until Our Lord’s judgment is fulfilled. This preface leads into a story that attracts in two ways: though strong characters, and a ‘you are there’ series of atmospheric descriptions that capture the sights, sounds, smells, and times: “The mounted regiments, the heavy cavalry of the Knights Templar and Hospitaller along with the king`s own heavy cavalry and also the county`s light cavalry brigades camped on the left of the road leading to the city. The private soldiers of the aristocrats erected their tents to the right. There was an empty square, tram-pled flat and fenced in with barriers constructed by the squires, where their lords were passing the time jousting and practising dragoon duelling. The metallic clattering was constant, blade on blade, on shield, on armour.”
From the invaders’ underestimation of the power of the king and the determination of the Hungarians to choose their own leader and destiny to the close attention to historical detail unparalleled in other stories of the times (according to author Tibor Gergely: “ About two-thirds of the events described in the novel actually happened. About 70% of the characters in the novel were real people. The novel also features details from original, contemporary documents that fit perfectly into the story.” ), this story is powerfully rendered. It will simply delight both newcomers and seasoned readers familiar with the times, who well know of the gap in literature surrounding this important, little-covered era (again, per Gergely: “So far no novels or films have been made about the events of the Mongol invasion in Hungary.” ).
The close attention to historical detail alone would have made this historical novel exceptional; but its ability to draw in those less familiar with the history blends accessibility with flair for drama that exquisitely captures the pathos, conflict, and tortuous social and political changes that were the legacies of an invasion that almost resulted in genocide.
It’s rare to find such a blend of scholarly detail spiced with compelling fictional proficiency. Tatar Storm is a standout in many ways, and deserves a place as a foundation piece in any historical fiction library, and on the shelves of readers who may or may not have a prior background or interest in medieval European history.

People of Struggles is an epic historical/fiction piece set in 1992 Hungary, where two terrorist groups are at work to instigate chaos and destruction, and in 1552, in a parallel universe.
The siege of Eger Castle in 1552 was one of the greatest victories in Hungarian history.
István Dobó, the chief captain of the Eger castle, and barely two thousand men, women and children faced the most powerful army of the greatest empire. Their patriotism, courage and self-sacrifice forced the 100,000 soldiers of the Turkish imperial army to retreat. This story was born in honor of this two thousand Hungarians, and documents how these ordinary men exhibited a patriotism and courage that could not stave off disaster in other nations.
First Lieutenant Gregory stands at the heart of these storms, representing the forces that attack and change the face of a nation and its choices, both ancient and modern.
Tibor Gergely’s language reveals that English is not his native tongue, and at times requires some degree of contemplation and interpretation on the part of the reader: “It occurred in the year 1976. I was wearing just my age of ten and thanks for the enthusiastic support from my friends, this wearing has grown to a spectacular extent. Just in those days, cherry was ripening, so we were found on a neighbouring cherry tree in one of the afternoons by the owner of the tree, who didn’t take kindly to our chewing of all his cherries.”
He crafted his novel to include historical events that are are authentically captured. Additional data rounds out the story based on current knowledge of events.
Mr Pirovich, the interpreter, faced a huge challenge in translating this piece for English speakers without sacrificing the nuances of the Hungarian language in the process. Some names also have special meanings in the novel, which would not have made sense in English, so in the end all the names had to be translated.
The tone, however, flavors stories that captures past and present experience by capturing a sense of atmosphere and culture that better English, though more polished, might have failed to adequately represent. The translator does a good job of capturing the feelings and history of the events and peoples of the times.
The descriptions and language even out as the novel progresses (or, perhaps the reader, absorbed in the action that follows, merely becomes more inured to the unfamiliar nuances of usage) and the magic of Gergely’s world comes to life: “Reaching the Shrine Bastion, I found men on the wall struck dumb in amazement. At first, I thought that the victims’ sudden death gave rise to this amazement, but seeing what they watch, the magical sight enchanted even me. We gazed in amazement as suddenly, a gap opened in the thick blanket of clouds that spread over the sky and through this opening, unearthly light of golden rays of the sun flooded the hilltop with the nine bodies hanging on stake, as if the light rays would show their tormented souls the way to the kingdom of heaven.”
From interactions with village children to determinations to stave off disaster, the characters interact with one another in a realistic, compelling manner, involving readers in the evolution of not just a story, but a struggle that will ultimately define Hungary and the psyche of its peoples.
