Local Hero Ian Jackson Saves Stranded Hikers in Dramatic Mountain Rescue

Asheville, NC – In a heart-pounding rescue mission yesterday, local outdoorsman and volunteer firefighter Ian Jackson braved treacherous conditions to save three hikers stranded on Mount Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi.

The hikers, a family from Charlotte, had ventured off the main trail and became disoriented as thick fog rolled in. With temperatures dropping rapidly, they called 911 but were unable to provide their exact location.

Jackson, a seasoned mountaineer and member of the Buncombe County Search and Rescue team, was among the first responders. Using his knowledge of the terrain and tracking skills, he located the family just before nightfall.

'They were cold, scared, and one of them had a minor ankle injury,' Jackson said. 'We had to move fast—the weather was turning worse.'

Jackson guided the hikers to safety, carrying one on his back when the injured hiker could no longer walk. The family was treated for mild hypothermia but are expected to make a full recovery.

'Ian’s quick thinking saved lives today,' said Rescue Team Captain Maria Rodriguez. 'He’s a true hero.'

When asked about his actions, Jackson shrugged it off. 'Just doing my job. I’m glad everyone’s okay.'

The incident has sparked renewed calls for better trail markers on Mount Mitchell, but for now, the community is simply grateful for Jackson’s bravery.
