Not every sibling relationship in anime was created equally. Though sibling rivalry can get old, sometimes sibling bonds can go too far.
The relationship between siblings is often tough to describe, seeing how it involves a multitude of emotions and shared history. It’s the same in anime as well, though it’s actually quite rare to see healthy relationships between siblings. Most sibling bonds shown on screen are toxic and unhealthy, and the seemingly positive ones fall apart if you look too closely as well.
Sometimes, it’s the unnecessary hate between the siblings that makes their relationship unbearable. However, often it’s the “more than siblings but less than lovers” trope that ends up getting under the skin of anime fans. So, which sibling relationships are good, and which ones are terrible?
Most people will be unaware of this underrated gem, a Chinese show called All Saints Street . It revolves around the lives of many supernatural creatures, two of whom and Lynn and Lily Angel. The two are adoptive siblings, but their bond couldn’t be any purer.
Lynn is the doting and sometimes overprotective big brother, while Lily is a pure and innocent little angel who looks up to her big brother as an inspiration. She wants to grow up and be just like him.
The biggest problem with this anime is how it normalizes lack of consent, respect and boundaries between siblings. Hiroomi wants the attention of his sister, and when she does not give it to him, he resorts to underhanded activities to get what he wants.
One example would be to force his sister to call him “onii-chan” in exchange for help or a favor, despite knowing she does not like calling him that. Another example would be to take photos and videos of his sister without her consent, and not deleting them when she makes it clear she’s not happy with his behavior.
For every bad sibling relationship, there’s always that one show that couldn’t be more on point when it comes to the love (or lack thereof) between a sister and her brother.
This short comedy series focuses entirely on the love-hate relationship between this sibling duo, who always try to prank and one-up the other one. They love causing trouble for each other, but do not hesitate to swoop in and save their sibling when things become serious.
Anime is often guilty of portraying LGBTQ+ characters in poor light, and Citrus is no different. Its portrayal of the relationship between two gay sisters, is excessively toxic, seeing how hopelessly the two are co-dependent on each other.
Yuzu is perhaps the worse out of the two. She does not communicate her feelings and issues with her siblings clearly. On the contrary, she gaslights Mei, making her feel as if she (Mei) is the one responsible for Yuzu's poor decision-making abilities.
In perhaps one of the best relationships from the series, Tensei and Tenya are the ideal sibling duo. The amount of mutual love and respect they have for each other simply brings tears to fans’ eyes.
Tenya admires his big bro and strives to be just like him when he grows up. On the other hand, Tensei couldn’t be prouder of his younger bro, who he considers to be more talented than he is .
Masamune is a young boy while his step-sister Saigiri is 13 years old, and their dynamic makes viewers a tad uncomfortable. To spice things up, she’s also a famous ero-mangaka (which means she draws NSFW manga ) who is worshipped by Masamune.
This was a recipe for disaster from the get go, especially considering Saigiri’s age. In the beginning Saigiri avoids Masamune. When she eventually opens up to him, she shows annoyance if Masamune even looked at another girl, going so far as to punish, avoid or gaslight him for having a life beyond her.
Shino and Hamaji adopted each other as siblings after a fire in their village consumed everything and everybody they knew. They grew up very close (and protective) of each other, but always respected each other’s boundaries.
In fact, the listless Hamaji decided to go to school and study medicine, so that she could become a doctor and one day treat Shino, if he were to ever go back to being the weak boy that he once was.
The Eren x Mikasa is perhaps the most controversial ship in the Attack On Titan fandom, and it’s easy to see why. It is Mikasa’s unhealthy obsession with her step-brother Eren, that is the root of all problems in this ship.
Fans would have still been able to overlook that obsession (since many parents are also shown to be obsessed and over-protective of their children). However, her obsession was so unhealthy that in season one, she was ready to die fighting titans after she believed Eren to be dead!
It’s extremely rare to see a sibling relationship in shonen where no one’s dead, toxic or abusive. It is also heartening to see a female sibling who isn’t a terrible “damsel in distress” trope. In fact, Nezuko goes out of her way several times to save Tanjiro’s life and expectedly, Tanjiro does the same for his sister.
Both have their own struggles to deal with, but at the end of the day, both know they can count on the other person fully. The trust that these two share between them is absolute.
Sora is 18 and Shiro is 11, and the two are shown to be step siblings. Shiro shows jealousy when Sora chats to other girls (because she hates sharing attention) and Sora is shown to be unhealthily possessive of his sister.
The anime establishes it in the very beginning that the relationship between them is so unhealthy that they literally stop functioning in the absence of the other . Of course, that is played off as a joke instead of a very problematic issue. The show's OVA too went out of its way to make several uncomfortable jokes about the sibling duo, which definitely makes it one of the cringiest sibling relationships out there.
Sarika is obsessed with anime-manga and she can't believe she's living her dream of writing about things she's, well, obsessed with!

My sister is 10 years old, and we all try to encourage her to use her imagination and play. In this day and age, I feel like sometimes everyone (including kids) are too busy looking at screens for entertainment instead of entertaining themselves. I try to explain to her that I wish I felt like doing all the things she can, but having chronic fatigue syndrome leaves me very limited.
Naturally, she wants to play games and do things with me. We might play a game on the card table, where I can lay in the chair on the heating pad. She plays restaurant and brings me food. She made her own menu and everything. Then we swap roles and I bring her fake food.
However, after we were done playing restaurant, she wanted to play doctor. This may sound silly, possibly petty or even me just being plain sensitive. I told her alright, we can play that. She asks me why I am there, and of course, playing doctor is no fun if there is nothing wrong with you. Right? It makes sense for a kid to want to have something wrong with the other. That is what playing doctor is anyway.
I just kept hoping she would not bring up my illness. She had done it in the past. She had asked why I was there and even had a cure for it. I wish she did, I guess she wished so too. I had to explain to her over and over how it works. Do I expect her to perfectly understand? Of course not. But it sometimes seems like she does not believe me.
In the end, all she did was say I had strep throat. She then “removed” my tonsils later.
Every time she asks if I want to play doctor, my stomach drops. I am sick of doctors. I am sick of going to doctors with all sorts of things wrong with me and being told there is either nothing they can do or they do not believe me.
I hate that I am this way, and I hate that the very thought of playing doctor fills me with such dread and fear.
I hate that I am 22 years old, and I have enough diagnoses on my chart that it takes up many pages.
I hate that the smallest thing like this triggers all these emotions. I hate explaining it, so I typically don’t.
When my younger sister wants to play doctor, I do. I play with her. I swallow these emotions, because the last thing I need to do is make her feel like she needs to walk on eggshells.
I try my best to not let everything affect me personally, like when people that say, “if you do not have a wheelchair, you should not use the handicap parking.”
It’s those who refuse to believe someone as young as me can relate on a personal level to my grandmother and have numerous health problems.
It’s those using my illness as a joke or a fake reason not to have a job.
It’s those people who direct something at one population, and yet I get offended.
I feel like ableism is real, but I also feel I need to remember not everyone is aware. I was not aware til I got sick at 19. I was not aware of the world of chronic illness.
Educate those around you. Spread awareness not just for the illness you personally have, but the whole spoonie world.

Nights we all piled into the same double bed.
Five girls, a huddled mass of elbows and rear ends.
Each one massaging, scratching, begging
another to rub her back.
The little two got crammed in between
our arm pits, honeysuckle on the vine.
All those girls and I was the biggest,
the one that took everything first,
even stepped on a rusty nail
saving my sisters the shot, the infection.
Mary fought me—
a sister with more hip and bigger breasts.
She was choppy: red cut curls, round stormy eyes.
Her nails bitten, not any moon showing.
Contrary, a curl, so proud of being so very good
and so very bad.
Sister—dark and wild.
Her hips are wide and spread easily
but tight like a wet wish bone
she opens to let men in.
They only get one wish
which they can’t tell.
She was like humid weather,
something I learned to endure.
Her temper sat in a cold bucket
turning her white skin red.
When her lower lip shoved out
the others gave her anything she wanted
to keep her calm,
but not from me. Not from me.
Fighting was a kind of loving in our family.
That Sunday all us girls were crammed in the back seat
I got the window
She pinched my thigh.
After church, I took the bottom sheet off her bed.
She ripped the bedding off mine
leaving me a bare mattress and a bed to make.
I threw her sheets and blankets down the stairs.
A rage of hot wind flew at me.
I turned, raised my right hand.
Stop it Mary, please stop.
My fist landed in the middle of her back. Hard.
Winded she slumped. Sobbed.
Her fingertips scratched the wooden floors.
It is nightlife now. He rises above me
looking like a man on a cross,
his hands supporting himself over my body.
His right leg tucked behind his left,
he is pushing himself into me
searching for a sweet spot.
I press my legs into the small of his back.
Just as I climb up toward his breath
I miss sleeping with those sisters—
I miss the honeysuckle I used to pick and suck
those sweet insides—sweet yellow pollen fills my lungs
and they are in my skin, rubbing my back,
tangled in the sheets. Please, little sister
please rub my back just a little longer.
