A Winter Scene with Skaters near a Castle is an oil-on-oak painting undertaken between 1608 and 1609 by the Dutch artist Hendrick Avercamp. [1] As with a number of Avercamp's works, the picture is part of the Flemish tradition of painting "the harmony of human activity and the cycle of nature". [2] He was influenced in his subject by the Little Ice Age, particularly the cold winter of 1607 ...
Avercamp mainly painted winter scenes, called 'wintertjes' in the 17th century. His early paintings, dated 1608 and 1609, show the influence of Flemish landscape painters like Hans Bol, Gillis van Coninxloo and David Vinckboons, and a strong interest in narrative details in the tradition of Pieter Brueghel.
Hendrick Avercamp Ice Scene This painting shows a typically Dutch phenomenon: having fun on the ice. People are skating, sledging and playing a game called 'kolf', a sort of ice hockey. On the left, a group of people have fallen through the ice, but help is on the way.
Avercamp, who combined the Dutch love of landscape with scenes of daily life, was among the first European artists to specialize in depictions of winter. The pearly gray tonality here becomes ever paler and the forms less distinct as they move into the distance, subtly conveying a sense of deep space on a frosty day.
