I have to drag myself out of my bed five days a week at 6. Even with the promise of crowd-free, perfectly groomed ski slopes, it was in the balance as to whether I would make it to the early-morning session in Hemsedal, Norway, and that was before I spotted the thermometer declaring it was minus 16C on the mountain. In the end, the lure of pristine snow was too much, and I lugged myself and my skis up to the lift. Then came the warning that we should watch out for white spots on our faces in case frostbite started to set in and I almost turned on my snowbooted heel. In England, these temperatures would prompt little short of mass hibernation. Here you just wear more layers. The hardy Norwegians have a saying: 'There's no such thing as too cold, only the wrong clothes' and so off we went, as I rued not packing a balaclava in with my ski socks. Hemsedal, in the Scandinavian Alps, allows up to people to ski its slopes from 7. The early wake-up call is a wrench but despite the bitter temperatures, there is no doubt it is well worth the effort. Emerging from the lift onto the slopes as yet untouched with the sun poking through the clouds and then haring off down the empty pistes was the highlight of a five-day trip this February. It felt like I had my own mountain and exactly what a ski holiday should be about: powdery snow, a glimpse of sun and lots of fresh air very fresh in this case. Traditionally, it is an expensive place to ski - although with the pound now weak against the euro, the disparity in price is more negligible. It is also a slightly different experience to the hedonistic adventures elsewhere in Europe, where apres-ski tends to take equal-billing with the snow. In Hemsedal, sport rather than partying is definitely the top attraction, with the focus on families and couples rather than groups of somethings keen to let rip. Most of its million visitors a year are Norwegians themselves or tourists from Sweden and Denmark. Russia is just catching on. However, the resort claims that those Brits who do take the plunge return year after year. The town sits between Oslo and Bergen at the centre of the mountains that divide the country from east to west and is around three to four hours drive from the capital's airport. The view from the bus is bleak as we slip and slide along the road, with very few houses and snow as far as the eye can see. On arriving in Hemsedal, the contrast to the chocolate-box beauty of Alpine resorts is stark. There are chalets dotted around the mountain but our destination is a huge new lodge, opened only last December, at the base of the mountain. The first ski lift was built here in and it has been expanding ever since. Today, it is one of Norway's largest and most modern resorts and this is the latest development, with more planned for the next few years. It is slightly imposing but you soon come to realise that what this place lacks in charm it more than makes up for in practicality. On the higher floors, there are spacious self-catering apartments with all mod-cons. Minimalist in design, they have everything you could possibly need including a fire, TV, huge dining table, fully-equipped kitchen, and even your own sauna to soothe any aching limbs in the evenings. Our larger apartment had numerous bedrooms, three bathrooms and not one but two sitting areas with a balcony looking out on to the mountainside. There is also a shop for those last minute extras. The lodge's biggest selling point, other than the clear family-friendly environment, is it is as ski in ski out as you can possibly get. From my bedroom, I could look out onto the slopes and heard the whirr of the groomers as I nodded off at night. By day, it is all of a two-minute walk to the first button lift to take you up to the main station. The mountain has been carefully cultivated so that people of all abilities can ski from top to bottom, with almost 50 runs spanning three peaks including Norway's highest developed mountain at 1,m so everyone can roam where they like without worrying about getting out of their depth. The pistes are generally wide and inviting, meaning even the cautious like myself can brave the black runs without too much danger, and there is little risk of getting lost as all lead back to the main station whichever way you head. Right by the lodge sits the largest children's area in Norway for three to six-year-olds to keep the smallest children entertained. There is also great off-piste if you know your stuff, and two snowboard parks for those keen on even more of an adrenalin rush. It was in Hemsedal four years ago that Mads Jonsson made history with a 57m ft jump from a specially-built table top. In recent years, warmer temperatures have caused problems for some Alpine resorts in terms of the amount of snowfall. Not in Norway - Hemsedal has had one 'bad' year in the past quarter century. In , eight metres fell - the most since snow statistics were first recorded in And if there is ever a shortage, the mountain is rigged up with a water pump system so operators Skistar can create their own. The season here is also longer than continental Europe, starting in November and running right through until May, with an average days skiing every year. The resort features the largest children's area in Norway for three to six-year-olds. Hemsedal is sufficiently south that daylight hours are similar to the UK - six to seven in December rising to 12 in March - so you don't need to fear near-constant darkness. It is only in the north that winter can see just one hour of daylight per day. When darkness does fall, for four nights a week the mountain stays open late with a handful of skiers able to take advantage of floodlit pistes from 6pm until 9pm. Throughout the season, it is unlikely to be warm - even in April temperatures are an average minus 0. Meanwhile, those looking for a break from the slopes, can don a helmet and race skidoos on a track in the forest or, for a more sedate experience, go huskie riding across frozen lakes. Both are a short drive from the lodge. Although Hemsedal does boast a few souvenir shops, bars and restaurants, most visitors seem not to venture far from their apartments and eat there at night, probably because it is pretty expensive. If you do venture out to eat, I can highly recommend the Skogstad Hotel in the town where elk and reindeer are likely to be on the rustic-style menu, or the Skarsnuten Hotel further out which has more refined dishes. Vegetarianism does seem to be a fairly foreign concept here so non-meat eaters may find there is a lack of choice. Food at the Lodge itself was also fairly good, although service was slow despite the handful of customers each night. Apparently the done-thing in Norway is to have a few drinks after skiing and then retire to your apartment for more, cheaper, alcohol before venturing out again at around midnight to dance until dawn but during my visit, only Saturday was anything approaching rowdy with the bar beside the main station packed from 3pm and people still partying in the town until the early hours. This is definitely a less high-octane ski resort, but none the poorer for that as long as you are not hoping for mad parties from the moment you step off the slopes until the following morning. If what you do want is fantastic skiing, a friendly, relaxed atmosphere and no headache each morning to put you off donning your boots, this might just be the spot for you.
