This amazing fiber is also experiencing a rebirth of interest among handspinners, but there is much confusion surrounding its growing and usage. The function of this article is to present information about commercial hemp and hold up some modern nonsense to closer analysis. (Keep in mind that issues including legalization of hemp's psychoactive and medical twin, marijuana, are beyond the scope of this post.

Although there is some clinical discrepancy about the various species making up the Cannabis genus, it looks like if fiber hemp and marijuana are the same types, Cannabis sativa, which triggers much confusion.

Marijuana has a signature amount of a psychoactive cannabinoid: delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol or "THC." Hemp has extremely little THC; the legal description of commercial hemp reads that it needs to have less than 13 of 1 percent (0. 3%) of THC. It has cannabidiol, or CBD, or other cannabinoids various from THC.
