Helvettia

Despite the clear distinction made in human culture, many scientists —mostly biologists— consider them to be part of the same species. In the past, before the Third Era, magic was a scarce resource in Terrabisoña due to the little quantity of mana that was dissolved in the environment. That is why it was necessary to make an extra effort to channel that mana. The members of the clergy and some renowned wizards were properly educated to avoid reaching certain limits or make their efforts more efficient. Some humans, mostly self-taught, were able to channel it because their ties to life and death were thin, allowing them to access the beyond with their souls to drain mana from the ethereal. With the overuse and overexposure to it, these people began to fall ill, lose weight, and more specifically, suffering physical changes on their ears and growing horns as an extension of their altered skulls, which is why the Clerum Matherae of that time considered them devils, giving them the name helvettia: a species that arose from a human whose spirit was immersed in the corruption formed by manipulating this world "without the Goddess's permission" —a Goddess who never gave instructions about it—. The researchers found that they produced great energy the more they suffered, as the further they were from life and, consequently, the greater their connection to their non-physical environment, allowing them to access a larger reserve of mana. This led to a great interest in creating inexperienced magic users to deliberately transform them into helvettia, something that the clergy of Fereuhn tried to keep under secret, as they traded them as very expensive products. Those who ended up transforming into helvettia and were captured would face a much more tragic fate than death.
Nowadays, although many went to Falkshelvett to contribute to their own kingdom, many live in tribes that reside deep within the dungeons, isolated from humans and with access to a vast reserve of mana that could even make experienced mages feel sick. The magic they practice is tied to the concept of death and suffering, using spirits that remain anchored to the earthly world —being much more difficult for them to ascend to the heavens if they died in a dungeon— and living corpses, who often follow them voluntarily because they appreciate the warmth and inner peace they make them feel. To elevate their magic to a higher level, the Helvettia are prone to harming themselves, for the more pain they endure, the more they detach from this life and the physical plane, allowing them to command those souls and corpses with greater intensity, even manipulating physical space thru the ethereal.
