Any help will be appreciated! Preparing for first winter in Finland Sponsor:. Re: Preparing for first winter in Finland Post by inkku » Sat Sep 03, pm You could check what the thrift shops have. I have bought so much stuff there, I really do like their shops. Once you know what you need or want to use, you could invest in new items. The major sales are just before or after Christmas before New Year. Re: Preparing for first winter in Finland Post by agroot » Sat Sep 03, pm You missed the sale period already - it's right after winter. The only thing IMO worth spending tons of money on is the jacket, and better to check sport shops like Scandinavian Outdoor or brand stores like Halti where you can find winter sport clothing. Even under with long walk outside I never needed sweater, scarf or anything wool. It's enough with a good jacket, any beanie, any long john with cheap outdoor pants and all weather boots. Don't forget to get a pair of shoe spikes in case snow is turned into slippery ice - if you haven't tried, believe me it'd be the most terrifying thing to walk down a frozen path, even if it's only 5 meters long. Re: Preparing for first winter in Finland Post by riku2 » Tue Sep 06, am I echo the statement about the shoes. In the city the footpaths don't have huge amounts of snow on but often lots of ice instead. You need something with a soft sole that doesn't slip on the ice, not a super thick tread which would be more suitable for autumn walks in muddy fields. The studded shoes are good outdoors but if you go into a shop with them on then things can be a bit slippery. The essential items are beanies, winter boots, wool socks, thermal underwear and a thick winter jacket. It is very important to cover your head and feet properly as you lose a lot of heat from those areas. Honestly, after a few years, one gets used to the cold. For me, anything over C or so no longer counts as cold anymore. What to wear in Finland during winter?

Are you planning your winter adventure in Finland? Wondering about what to wear in the Finnish winter? The secret? It's all about layering up! How cold does it get? Well, statistically speaking, January is the coldest month of the year, and the farther north you go, the colder it tends to be. Brace yourself for some wind, especially atop the fells and along the coastlines. For more details on climate and weather in Finland, have a look on our climate and weather page. Read on to learn what to pack, where to get the items you need, and how to enjoy winter in Finland like a seasoned local. It all begins with your base layer — think long underwear. For many, the go-to choice is natural fabrics, such as merino wool, bamboo, or silk. Not only are these materials more sustainable, but they're also easy to take care of. Alternatively, you can opt for technical materials designed to move moisture off the skin — popular among winter sports enthusiasts, from skiing to hiking to ice skating. If you are unsure, stick with merino wool. Regulating your temperature is as easy by removing or adding clothing. These layers hold air between them, each one adding a bit more warmth. Engaging in winter sports? Opt for thinner layers to prevent overheating. When choosing to do city activities or simply taking a casual stroll, thicker in-between layers are in order. Choose a woollen sweater or a hoodie paired with warm trousers. Remember, tight-fitting garments might feel uncomfortable with multiple layers — size up or pick out something loose. Also, snug layers are less warm, as there is less air insulation. Are you doing winter activities or just seeing the sights around the city? This will affect your choice of the outer layer. Regardless of the activity, the best coats are windproof and waterproof. The warmth does not depend on the thickness of your attire but rather on the quality of the materials. Look out for filling materials such as down and feathers for optimal warmth, although there are plenty of other materials and options to choose from. And don't forget, a hood is a must-have feature in any good coat. When arriving to Finland, there are plenty of stores selling winter clothes. Head to city shopping centres or sports stores — they've got you covered. Many destinations in Lapland have stores stocked with all the necessary gear. If you'd rather not buy all the clothes for your visit, consider exploring winter clothing rental options. You can even pre-order rental winter clothing to pick up at the airport for added convenience. Keep in mind that many guided winter safaris in Lapland for northern lights and reindeer or husky rides typically include clothing rental in the package. Places to go Things to do Practical tips.
