The only thing she could ever bring herself to say is that I was beautiful. And I loathed my beauty for that! Because she found it appealing. But that was a very decisive day in my life. Because that day I decided that I would provide for Ganja. Do whatever had to be done. Take whatever steps had to be taken. But always take care of Ganja. Ganja is a complicated woman. Her obsession with self is everything. And what ends up dominating her life…and afterlife. This is the terrifying world of Ganja and her husband, Dr. Hess Green. Both of them are addicts, and their drug of choice is the life force that powers us all…human blood. Hey, even in the underworld, people need their hobbies! And maaaaaan, is it all the more brilliant for it! What director Bill Gunn did was a powerful film that can be viewed as not only a cinema masterpiece, but a mind-bending journey into morality, religion, addiction, and culture. With each era, there are movies made that could only have come out of that specific time, maybe because of the attitudes of the time, or those preceding it. A lot of the old blaxploitation flicks easily fall into that category. The movie has this electric undercurrent running throughout it, influencing everything from the performances to the score to the hyper, jumpy camera-work. This is a different type of film, slowly developing into the full-on degeneration of what would otherwise be a beautiful, brilliant, and vibrant couple. The beginning of the film is unsettling and creepy, and in an entirely human—not supernatural—way. The action of the film goes into hyperdrive soon after when the doctor is ruthlessly stabbed by his now maniacal assistant wielding a ceremonial dagger from an old, blood-drinking civilization called Myrthia. After he does the deed, he promptly writes a cynical, somewhat cryptic letter to Black youth opposite a single red rose, before shooting himself in the chest, naked and fresh from a bath, all set to the haunting sounds of a woman wailing the blues. Hess Green has awoken miraculously unblemished from the brutal stabbing…but not in every way! The image of a man slurping down blood, NOT in the darkness of a spooky Transylvanian mansion, but in the cold fluorescent light of a 20 th century suburban house…. It drags the dusty old vampire mythology into a raw, disjointed landscape. From the jump, the viewer sees that this is a vampirism that refuses to be romanticized! The dagger has brought him back from the dead…. George is very much dead but Hess lives on! Ganja is fire and ice, stunning beauty and haughtiness. Hess seems both amused and aroused by the woman, and they fall into a relationship that is in all appearance, the perfect match, but tragically doomed. Ganja crosses the threshold into her new reality. She looks at Hess…and she wants him. And she will pay a dear price for the attraction. She is a woman who realizes with a sharp perception, the exceptional power of her beauty. Ganja is an unusual and fascinating character because she is not quite a femme-fatale, although her phenomenally charismatic performance borrows elements from that—but she is not entirely a damsel in distress either. She knows what Hess has done. She loves him. She wants a life with him. She is the lady of the manor. Ganja will do what needs to be done. And Hess will too…. They will step into a future that will strip them of their layers revealing the bare essence of hunger and survival. The narrative is loose…. Hess has desired Ganja, probably more than anyone else in his life. He has had a yearning for her, a need, so he has selfishly pulled her into the trap he was caught up in. But then Hess struggles—MIGHTILY— with the spiritual pain, the agony of feeling that his vampiric actions are an abomination not only to himself, but God and the church and the community surrounding him. Bill Gunn took something that could have been very basic and reinvented it. He seemed to have single-handedly created a whole new genre! Maybe Black-experimentals-gothic. Marlene Clark delivers a superb, expertly crafted performance that swings between cruelty and kindness; selfishness and compassion. Her scenes are a study of barely repressed pain intertwined with intense sensitivity, mixed in with elegant sensuality. Clark gives a performance which starts off as an explosion and ends as a smoldering flame. No, Gunn did Ganja and Hess on HIS terms, literally packing it with so much rich spiritual and cultural symbolism, I could write ten more commentaries and not cover all the bases. He was a man who envisioned his art in a way that went against the cultural and cinematic tides, and he ended up paying for his artistic principles. His film was applauded at the Cannes Film Festival back in '73 and received a critics choice prize, but a big nearly hour-length chunk of footage was ultimately removed and it sank here in America. Which is a bleeding shame. Because he was trying to do something very special here. All kinds of boldness run up and through this piece! Bill Gunn wanted to make a statement on race, class, culture, society, and he made the choice of vampirism as the medium—maybe symbolic of the life being drained from the oppressed by the oppressors. But one thing is for sure—this movie is a combination of great talents, resulting in an absolute work of art. Short URL.
