In 1918, the U.S. Army Signal Corps sent 223 women to France as telephone operators to help win the Great War. They were intrepid, united in a common cause and like Joan of Arc before them, they wanted to save France. Told through 100-year-old letters, photos, rare archival footage, and interviews with family and historians, this documentary brings to life a story that was almost entirely unknown.

The very name, Hello Girls, sounds odd to our ears but was typical of the time. Many women served as nurses, ambulance drivers, and other support roles. None were recognized the same way as men were. Again, it was the notion of women's work - a notion that has existed for thousands and thousands of years and has only receded recently and only to a degree. I loved the profiles of the woman here and I wish there was more information about them. My problem with this documentary was that it turned something heroic into injustice, and it was so narrowly focused that it got the overall history wrong. Few historians believe that the Zimmerman Telegram had any meaningful role, beyond an added justification, for the U.S. entry into WWI. Pershing, ignoring advice from other generals with experience in warfare that rendered earlier tactics tragically obsolete, sent wave after wave of American troops into curtains of machine gunfire. We prevailed but our losses were appalling. Meanwhile, a pandemic was underway that would kill millions yet news of it was suppressed. Our troops would return to an economy in deep recession with that pandemic at its height. Set against all this some telephone operators slighted by the Army. In short, what was missing from this documentary was context. Yes, these women were treated badly and unfairly. Yet what they did is more interesting than what wasn't done for them.

I agree with other reviewers, this documentary should be shown in every school in the USA. The portion of the film dealing with the women's fight for recognition is absolutely crucial to their story and to the history of women in military service, so I'm very glad they included it. The only thing I would change about this documentary is to make it longer and include more of the stories about the women's service in France during the war and in Germany afterward. Also, where is the DVD and/or Blu-ray? I want to buy a copy for myself and my local library!

Wonderful documentary about a little-known aspect of history. The period film footage and interviews with the women's descendants were particularly riveting. So glad this movie exists!

I'm retired Army and know WW 1 history . But I didnt know about the WW1 service of the Women's Army Signal Corps. Great personal accounts of the "Hello Girls " from 1918 to 1978. They were denied Veterans Status for 60 years and this movie takes you inside their unit, personal lives and quest to obtain Vet Status.

Excellent documentary about some very brave and hard-working WOMEN who helped with the war effort in France. As an ex-navy Radioman petty officer, I have much to thank such women for paving the way to equal recognition with my brothers in the military service. I feel for them though. 60 years is a long time to wait for the proper recognition they were due.

As a veteran, I am ashamed that the government did not recognize these women soldiers in their lifetime. So glad someone took the time to show us who they were.

Unfortunately, the fight to gain government recognition overpowered the work of the Hello Girls. Would have liked more footage on the volunteers and less on the other rhetoric. Also, do not see how the documentary turned so feministic. The Hello Girls were sent to France in 1918. It wasn't until 1948 that women were finally considered a permanent part of the U.S. military services.
