Helicopter Crash in Valtellina: Pilot Ejected, Injured

VALTELLINA HELICOPTER INCIDENT LEAVES PILOT INJURED AFTER EJECTION

Emergency services responded swiftly this afternoon to a serious helicopter accident near the Alpine resort town of Bormio in Italy's Valtellina region. The incident occurred shortly after 2 PM local time when a small helicopter, reportedly a Robinson R44, experienced difficulties during flight.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing the aircraft lose control before crashing into a wooded area on a slope near the town. Disturbingly, the pilot was ejected from the cockpit during the impact sequence. Rescuers arriving at the remote location found the pilot conscious but suffering significant injuries, including suspected fractures and trauma. The pilot was immediately airlifted by another helicopter to a specialized trauma center in Sondrio for urgent medical treatment.

Authorities have cordoned off the crash site, which is accessible only by foot or off-road vehicles, as investigators from the Italian Civil Aviation Authority begin their work. The cause of the accident remains under investigation, with initial focus on potential mechanical failure or pilot error.
