Helen Mirren Huffs Helium With Jimmy Fallon
After he complimented her on her beautiful accent, Jimmy Fallon proposed a fun game to Helen Mirren on The Tonight Show Monday: he would ask her questions and she would answer, but first, they’d inhale a little helium.
Helen Mirren was on Today and got to talking about a certain word she doesn’t like - sexy. When Matt Lauer asked why, Mirren responded, “It limits human qualities into this very narrow, you know, rather mundane and banal little place and human beings are so more complex and interesting and deep and everything than that.”

RANDOM (KIND) ACTS BY RANDOM (KIND) WOMEN
do you like stories about women doing things for other women? that’s great! because we have a place where stories just like that are going to be curated for you to read whenever you need a pick-me-up or a break from your probably terrible job at truly any time of day.
this is a new project that needs a little help to get up and running, so if you have a story you’d like to submit, or if you’d like to know more about Random Acts of Women, please visit the blog and take a look around, and give this post a quick lil reblog to spread the word!
My assistant and I were enjoying our semi annual Margarita Monday celebration this evening when, through what I can only assume was the mystical powers of the spirits found within my frozen green concoction, I shared with my assistant how I landed the role of Emily Appleton in the smashingly succesful sequel to National Treasure, simply titled: National Treasure: Book of Secrets. Mind you, I never actually viewed this film so I cannot and will now spoil the mystery of the secret book in question, though I was told Jon Voight during our weekly visit to the gates his daughter Angie's home to play "spies" that the book was actually the spirit of America and found in every man, woman, and son, but no daughters as they are deemed unclean until their 18th birthday. It seems like the movie has many layers, some which will only be pulled back by Helen Mirren scholars in the far future, shhh, I've met them.
Back to my story of landing the role. While movie-minded readers might think that Jon Turteltaub directed the film, in actuality, the film was directed by my close, personal friend, Nicolas Kim Sophia Coppola Cage.
I had first met Nic-nac (as only I can call him) during the summer of my 25th year living as Helen Mirren. I was working in an ice cream shoppe, my very first job outside of the theatre and Nic-nac came in from the hot sun for a cool treat. I would be fibbing if I told you my heart did not momentarily stop when I saw him, so struck by him was I that I nearly dropped the hard shell that I was told ice cream was to be eaten from. Get this, the ice cream patrons then went ahead and ate the shell. I brought this to my manager, insisting that we bring up these horrid people on charges of stealing through consumption but my complaints were shrugged off, because I was a woman and it was a different time.
As Nic-nac came up to the counter I leaned forward and asked what I could do for this fine young man. He shyly turned away whilst an older woman, whom I can only assume was a lover, asked for ice cream to be placed in a "cone" (what the patrons called the shells) for Nic-nac. I was mometarily taken aback by this whore's request, but as I was a lady, I took it in stride and gave an extra scoop of the creamed ice to Nic-nac. He thanked me quietly and walked away. I never forgot him.
My assistant asked how I could have possible known that it was the one and only Nicolas Cage back then, when, as my assistant so freshly pointed out, he would have only been six years of age. That's my little secret, and may or may not involve a tiny capsule placed inside Nic-nac's ice cream that contained a tracking device I have used to follow his skyrocket to fame since our chance encounter.

Its decided, we are no longer going to be updating this blog! Most because we don't really have the time anymore.

"I don’t believe that if you do good, good things will happen. Everything is completely accidental and random. Sometimes bad things happen to very good people and sometimes good things happen to bad people. But at least if you try to do good things, then you’re spending your time doing something worthwhile." - Helen Mirren.
I hope to meet some of the celebrities I write to. One day I hope to become a professional actress. Right now I do it on the side. If you want stuff on Angela Lansbury or Phyllis Logan please follow me @lansburyandloganfan.

REBLOG: IF YOU LOVE HELEN MIRREN!!!
John Oliver Enlists Helen Mirren for Report on Torture
On Last Week Tonight, John Oliver took on the topic of torture and whether or not the use of enhanced interrogation tactics by United States are actually useful. Oliver had Dame Helen Mirren read from the Senate Intelligence Committee’s Report on Torture to make the point that the former director of the CIA had never read it. "Yes, that's the actual Helen Mirren reading the report that you should have read, for you Porter Goss. So put it on in your car and f—ing listen to it," Oliver chastised the former CIA head.
Oliver then criticized the FBI and their belief that 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was telling the truth when he claimed that he sent a recruiter to Montana to enlist the support of African American Muslim converts; "Yeah, of course he was lying. What part of the phrase, 'Recruiting African-American Muslims in Montana' did not make you call bulls–t instantly. Even this week we've learned that the most famous black person from Montana may actually be white."
Helen Mirren Gets Chastised After Blurting 'Obscenity' On Live Television
Dame Helen Mirren was on the UK morning show, Good Morning Britain and let a naughty word slip. It all got started when she was talking about going camping with her former boyfriend, Liam Neeson. She described her trip as being “pissed with rain,” which apparently is something you shouldn’t say on television in Britain. The pair of hosts then proceeded to immediately apologize and told Mirren she couldn’t say things like that on morning television.
Golden Globes Red Carpet Face Off: Lena Dunham, Helen Mirren & More
Matching your dress to the carpet never gets old! Lena Dunham matched her shoes, lipstick, and dress, in a cherry red Zac Posen (that we predicted). Her fellow Girl, Alison Williams, wore Armani Prive, while Helen Mirren and Jane Fonda jazzed up their gowns with plenty of sparkle. But we want to know who you think wore red best—vote below!
Hollywood Accessorizes with "Je Suis Charlie" at the 2015 Golden Globes

The most statement-making accessory of the evening was not a Bulgari bracelet or a Cartier necklace, but the “Je Suis Charlie” sign or pin. George and Amal Clooney wore them. The human rights lawyer, who it attached to her bag, explained that “it was a hard week for France.” (She also dressed in the French label Dior.) Diane Kruger and Kathy Bates also wore the pins to raise awareness to this week’s tragedy which took the lives of 17 people in Paris. Helen Mirren wore a pen, to symbolize the power of free speech and free press, pinned to her gown. Jared Leto, meanwhile, before presenting the Best Supporting Actress Award, lent his support: “To our brothers, sisters, friends and families in France, our thoughts, our prayers, our hearts are with you tonight.” said Leto. “On vous aime. Je suis Charlie.”

Despite all the glitz and glam of awards season, Hollywood has had a long tradition of wearing their political hearts on their sleeves—especially when millions of viewers are tune in. At the Academy Awards in 1973, actor Marlon Brando sent Sacheen Littlefeather, a Native American woman, in his place to refuse his Oscar and protest the way Native Americans were being treated in the U.S. In 2003, Adrien Brody accepted his award for best actor in The Piano by laying a memorable kiss on his unassuming presenter Halle Berry and also giving a shout out to his childhood friend who had been deployed to the Middle East during the Iraq War.
The Globes will be no exception. There has already been a lot of talk about how the Hollywood community will deal with the aftermath. While hundreds of thousands marched in Paris today in protest, it will be interesting to watch how celebrities continue to show their support this evening.
Golden Globes 2015 Style Surprises: Amal Clooney’s Gloves, Jennifer Aniston’s Updo & More
Old Hollywood hair, white dresses, a barrage of diamonds—those are things you expect to see on the red carpet. But tonight’s Golden Globe Awards were full of style surprises: Almost no one wore Oscar de la Renta, Jennifer Aniston’s hair was up, Amal Clooney singlehandedly brought back opera gloves, and the Girls cast dropped the ball. Click through for the night’s most unexpected moments.
Kate Moss inspired Jennifer Aniston to wear her hair up.
“I kind of snuck it on her,” says Aniston’s hairstylist Chris McMillan. A few days ago, he showed her a picture of Kate Moss from Mario Testino’s book. “She was like, ‘Maybe…’ And if we do up, we normally do a ponytail,” says McMillan. “So we were like let’s do makeup first and we’ll do a ponytail. She liked the shape of the ponytail, so while she was in the chair I wrapped the ponytail into a bun.” Aniston asked McMillan if it was weird that she liked it up. “I haven’t washed my hair in two days, but I love the texture,” McMillan says she said. “It was a 15 minute hairdo! We used Texture Spray by Living Proof and she was most happy was she realized, ‘I don’t have to deal with my hair all night!’”
No one wore Oscar de la Renta at the 2015 Golden Globes.
Both fashion and Hollywood mourned the loss of legendary designer Oscar de la Renta this year. And yet, no one wore him on the red carpet. Despite loyal fans like Amy Adams and Oprah Winfrey attending the ceremony, his final collection was noticeably absent.
Amal Clooney singlehandedly ushers in the most unexpected trend.
We knew Mrs. Clooney would be wearing Dior Haute Couture, but those white opera gloves? Totally unexpected. Clooney joked on the red carpet, “She sewed them this morning…She’s very handy.” Expect to see gloves pop up throughout the rest of award season.
Only a handful of stars made a political statement.
That George and Amal Clooney wore Je Suis Charlie buttons wasn’t surprising; more people were expected to use the night as an opportunity to make a political statement. Helen Mirren, Jared Leto, and Diane Kruger also acknowledged the Charlie Hebdo tragedy, but after Interview-gate we thought more people would stand up for freedom of creative expression.
The cast of Girls dropped the ball.
Just last week the cast of Girls was the toast of the fashion world, with a stylish and star-studded fourth season premiere at the Museum of Natural History in New York. But tonight, they disappointed. Zosia Mamet’s over-sized two-toned dress and Jemima Kirke’s Rose Assoulin missed the mark. Lena Dunham, however, looked fantastic in head to toe red (her dress is Zac Posen).
Julianne Moore ditched Tom Ford for Givenchy.
Julianne Moore’s been loyal to Tom Ford since before she starred in his debut film, A Single Man. But at tonight’s Golden Globes she wore a custom made Givenchy dress (they were fitting her up until last night). The silver sequined gown descended into ombre feathers at the floor and is guaranteed to land her on every best dressed list, as usual.
Designers still aren’t dressing Melissa McCarthy.
Lucky magazine’s editor-in-chief tweeted, “Honestly designers are really missing out by not dressing Melissa McCarthy. She's smart/beautiful/hilarious/Gilmore Girls alum.” And it’s true. Nearly four years after her breakout role in Bridesmaids, Melissa McCarthy’s a welcome addition to any red carpet, so why is she still shopping her closet?
Helen Mirren’s 1st L’Oreal Ad Is Raw, Refreshing, & Officially Unretouched
Helen Mirren’s 1st L’Oreal Ad Is Raw, Refreshing, & Officially Unretouched
We’ve been eager to see Helen Mirren’s L’Oreal ads since she was announced as the beauty brand’s new spokesperson back in October — but it seems other people were more eager to accuse her first commercial as being inauthentic.
The 30-second ad, currently airing in the UK and Ireland for L’Oreal Age Perfect, is cheeky, smart, and raw — just like Mirren, herself. It touches on two sides of getting older: The part that’s kind of a bummer — we see the nearly 70-year-old Oscar winner (whose birthday is later in July) being offered a seat at the bus stop by a younger woman; a kind yet somewhat embarrassing gesture — as well as beginning to feel strong, mature, and invincible, just as she is.
More than anything, Mirren seems confident in her own skin, instead of pining after her youth. “[Age Perfect has] the science I trust to help me look like me,” she says. It’s not something we’re used to seeing very often in beauty campaigns, which are generally airbrushed into oblivion.
But some viewers didn’t see it that way. The UK’s Advertising Standards Authority received a complaint, recently, from a person claiming that “post-production techniques had been used to alter Helen Mirren’s appearance, specifically with regards to the lines around her mouth,” and therefore “misleadingly exaggerat[ing]” the effects of the actual product being sold.
However, the complaint was officially overturned on Wednesday, with the ASA stating that “consumers would expect Helen Mirren to have been professionally styled and made-up for the photo shoot, and to have been photographed and filmed professionally in flattering conditions.” Doesn’t hurt when the model’s a total sexpot, either.
“Our perfect age is now,” Mirren affirms in her ad, looking nothing short of radiant — wrinkles, gray hair, and all. “So are we worth it?” she asks, touching on L’Oreal’s famous ‘Because you’re worth it’ tagline. “More than ever.”
Helen Mirren Calls Hollywood Ageism 'F---ing Outrageous'
Academy Award-winning actress Helen Mirren lashed out at Hollywood ageism at TheWrap’s Power Breakfast in New York on Tuesday, calling it “f—ing outrageous” that 37-year-old Maggie Gyllenhaal was recently told she was too old to play the lover of a 55-year-old man.
“It’s f—ing outrageous,” said Mirren, who turns 70 this year, to a packed room of more than 120 women entertainment, media, theater, and digital. “It’s ridiculous. And ’twas ever thus. We all watched James Bond as he got more and more geriatric, and his girlfriends got younger and younger. It’s so annoying,” she said.
The Academy Award and recent Tony winner opened up about that and many other topics, including feeling fearful in her work and how she hates being referred to as “sexual,” despite her reputation.
She said appearances can deceive and her stellar career comes with its share of jitters. “I’m frightened all the time, of everything, really,” she said. “The point is not to be afraid of the fact that you’re afraid. You get on with it.”
She recalled a nun in her school years advising her, “Never be afraid of fear. The most dangerous thing is fear itself. That’s something I’ve held with me all my life. Don’t be foolish, but don’t be afraid of fear.”
And the glamorous older woman who has payed nude scenes well past her 50s added: “I don’t like the word sexual. There are people who are sexual, and who are less sexual. But there’s got to be another word. Sexual is so limiting,” the actress said.
When asked if she preferred being called hot, she said, “hot and cool.”
“Being powerful is so much more interesting than being beautiful,,” she added.
Mirren won the Academy Award for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen in 2006 as well as 3 Golden Globes, 4 Emmys, and 4 BAFTA Awards. She just picked up a Tony Award for Leading Actress for The Audience.
Other speakers at the breakfast included mountain climber Melissa Arnot, the first woman to climb Mount Everest five times.
