Chair Pushups: Either hold onto the sides of your chair or put your hands under your bottom and push up, lifting your body about an inch off the chair. Hold for a few seconds, and then repeat. Chair Resistance Bands : These resistance bands just go around the legs of your child’s chair. Then, your child can push on them with their feet. Hand Pushes: Your child can do this discreetly, with their hands under their desk, if they’re a bit self-conscious in the classroom, and worried about other kids looking at them. Just place the palms of your hands together and push them as hard as you can. Progressive Muscle Relaxation: This involves tensing your muscles and joints as tightly as you can, and then relaxing them completely. You start with one part of the body, usually hands or feet, and work your way through your entire body. This is a great script for younger children to get them to engage in this activity.

What’s inside this article: A look at how and why heavy work activities help children with self-regulation and sensory seeking behaviors, plus a list of 60 heavy work activities for children.

Today we’re talking about heavy work activities for kids , and don’t worry, I’m not referring to child labor. Heavy work in my world refers to any activity that pushes or pulls on the body.
Heavy work may help calm your child when they’re hyperactive or having trouble keeping their bodies calm.
It also helps with emotional regulation and may serve as a successful coping strategy.
Heavy work stimulates the proprioceptive system , which is our sense of body awareness. We have proprioceptors in our muscles and joints that are stimulated during heavy work activities.
Most people receive enough proprioceptive input through their daily activities. However, some do not.
Those who do not are sensory seekers.
They’re often hyperactive and rough, jumping and crashing into things, may even act aggressively, because their bodies are seeking extra proprioceptive input.
For children like this, heavy work can help them stay calm by providing that much needed sensory input.
Heavy work can help anyone calm down or deal with stress. It’s not just for kids.
Do you, or does anyone you know, like to clean when they get mad? What about exercise? Punch a punching bag? Those are all forms of heavy work.
I even know someone who likes to rearrange her furniture when she’s stressed out.
There are so many different activities that you can do to incorporate heavy work into your child’s day-to-day routine.
This list of heavy work activities will cover everything that I can think of.
Although yoga is exercised-based heavy work, it deserves its own section.
Yoga is a fantastic heavy work activity. But, it also stimulates the vestibular system and is an ideal calm-down strategy for kids who enjoy it.
My kids and I do yoga every morning. We love the Cosmic Kids Yoga Adventures which are available for anyone with an Amazon Prime membership ( You can get a 30-day trial here ).
The instructor, Jaime, makes yoga so much fun for kids and adults. There is also a lot of other content on there for kids about learning coping skills and mindfulness.
Often, kids are expected to remain seated in their chairs while they’re at school. This is often insanely hard for sensory seekers.
These are a few heavy work activities that kids can do without leaving their seats, which may be helpful during class time.
Since all activities that involve pushing and pulling fall into the heavy work category, there are loads of ways to incorporate this into a trip to the playground.
Most household chores involve heavy work , which is why I mentioned that a lot of adults like to clean when they’re stressed or angry.
Here are just some more activities that didn’t really fit a specific category.
I have tons of resources for kids who are sensory seekers. They benefit from many different types of sensory play, not just heavy work activities.

Heavy D, the rapper whose real name is Dwight Arrington Myers, is dead at the young age of 44. He was known for heavyset physique, his dancing and tongue-twisting rhymes.
Lt. Mark Rosen of the Beverly Hills police told the Associated Press that Heavy D died in a Los Angeles hospital Tuesday after collapsing at his condominium building. Rosen said Beverly Hills police officers were dispatched to Heavy D's condominium building Tuesday morning after receiving a report of an unconscious person laying on the walkway of a building. They found Heavy D was conscious and communicative but had difficulty breathing and was transported to Cedars Sinai Medical Center, where he later died.
The police found no signs of foul play. According to Rosen, Heavy D "was returning home from shopping. He experienced difficulty breathing while walking into his condominium building. He was being assisted up to his apartment by building personnel when he collapsed in an exterior hallway."
Heavy D's death comes almost a month after a comeback performance at the 2011 BET Hip-Hop Awards, when he performed a medley of his best-known singles, among them "Nuttin' But Love," " Is It Good to You " and " Now That We Found Love ."
On Twitter, he was known for posting affirming messages. His final tweet appeared early Tuesday morning.
Heavy D was born in Jamaica, and moved to Mt. Vernon, NY, when he was a child. Heavy D & The Boyz, the group which he fronted, was the first act signed to Uptown Records, the record company started by Andre Harrell.
"I remember getting him to work with then-choreographer Rosie Perez and him looking at me, like, 'Should we really do this?'," Harrell told Essence. "And I said, 'a big man dancing is going to be really fun for people. It's gonna make them love you.'"
The group enjoyed widespread fame in the early 1990s, and scored prominent cameos on hit songs with Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson. Heavy D also appeared on the theme songs for the popular sketch comedy shows "In Living Color" and "MadTV," and later went on to run Uptown, the record label on which he'd spent much of his career.
But tragedy befell the group at the beginning of its commercial success. Troy Dixon, a member of the group known as Trouble T Roy, died in an accident after a show when he fell from an exit ramp. Dixon's death was the inspiration for Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth's "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)," which is widely considered one of the greatest hip-hop songs of all time.
"It's hard because it's still unbelievable," a shocked Pete Rock told Hot 97 . "I didn't expect this to happen this fast, I was just with him a couple of weeks ago," the producer revealed. "I spent the night; he didn't even want me to leave. It's like he didn't want me to go and I laughed at him ... it was crazy."
"I felt like he was my guider, my person that just put me in place. He was my #1 believer," Rock, who was also Heavy's first cousin, said while on the radio. "He was just too good to be true."
Heavy D was name-checked on the Notorious B.I.G.'s first hit single, "Juicy, " in which Biggie Smalls remembered growing up and wanting the kind of fame enjoyed by rap pioneers like Heavy D and Salt 'N Pepa. A young Biggie Smalls appeared on Heavy D's 1992 album "Blue Funk."
