Heatwave Alert: knmi Predicts Record-Breaking Temperatures Across Europe

Across Europe, a heatwave is building, and the KNMI has issued alerts that some places may set new all-time highs in the days ahead. A stubborn high-pressure ridge is steering hot air from the south toward western and central Europe, with temperatures climbing rapidly and nights staying uncomfortably warm.

In the Iberian Peninsula and nearby, daytime temperatures could top 40°C in several southern and inland zones, with some valleys flirting with or briefly surpassing that mark. France’s southern regions and parts of the southwest are expected to bake as well, with highs around the upper 30s to near 40°C on the hottest days. Italy faces similar heat, especially along the plains and in the south, where 38°C or more is possible, and coastal breezes may offer only limited relief.

Beyond the familiar hotspots, central Europe is not spared. Daytime temperatures are forecast to rise into the mid-30s in many places, while humid nights keep indoor temperatures high. The Balkans and portions of eastern Europe could see a string of hot days, with readings in the low to mid-30s, and nights that refuse to cool.

Authorities warn that power grids, transport networks, and water resources could come under stress as people and systems struggle to cope with the heat. Officials remind the public to stay hydrated, limit time in direct sun, check on vulnerable neighbors, and keep pets indoors during peak heat.

Forecasts suggest the peak may occur in different places at different times, so stay tuned to local updates. While some models hint at relief in the far north later in the week, the coming days will demand caution across much of the continent as temperatures push records higher than usual for this season.
