Headology Taught Here

Headology Like psychology, but many witches think "psychology" is a bad word, or that it means "having a psychological problem". The practice of headology relies on the principle that what people believe is what is real. This is used by witches to earn respect or at least fear, and also to cure patients.
So - I work in mental healthcare and was taught CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) which is kind of the opposite of headology, I think. CBT helps you become aware of inaccurate or negative thinking so you can view challenging situations more clearly and respond to them in a more effective way.
In Discworld, Granny Weatherwax discusses "headology" fairly often as one of the keys to her power. What exactly does she mean by the term?
It's All About Headology From British Psychological Society: It's All About Headology Terry Pratchett has written many books for adults and children. They have a lot to offer psychology by providing good explanations and examples of how the human mind works, argues Chartered Psychologist Dr Katie Sparks.
But now, here in the Cambrian mountains of Wales, I'm living on a foundation of decidedly softer, non-metamorphic, sedimentary rocks like sandstone and mudstone. And I've found it incredibly hard to relate. I feel as if, as a natural granite or gneiss witch like Granny Weatherwax, I've landed on the kind of chalk which can't, as Pratchett puts it, 'grow witches' properly. This land ...
The short story The Sea and The Little Fishes was my very first Discworld exposure, and still my favorite Granny Weatherwax headology story. A committee of witches approaches Granny to ask her not to participate in the upcoming Witch Trials, because she always wins and it's discouraging other women from even trying.
The Headology Huddle & Headology Hub 2d You were born for deeper knowledge. You just weren't taught it. The curriculum that speaks to your soul isn't found in mainstream classrooms. It's here. In The Headology Huddle. Starseeds. Healers. Intuitives. Your course material just dropped and it's cosmic.
Terry Pratchett enthusiasts might notice the similarity between my magickal paradigm and "headology" - the preferred magick of Granny Weatherwax, the 'head witch' in Terry Pratchett's Discworld. Indeed, when I first read the Witches series, I was blown away by how marvellously Pratchett had captured my own brand of magick (with a touch of humour […]

According to Witches Abroad, Esmerelda "Esme" (later "Granny") Weatherwax is the younger of two daughters. Her father was a hunter who taught her that "a bad hunter chases, a good hunter waits" (Lords and Ladies). Little is revealed about her mother except that she had a long illness and Esme nursed her until her death. Magical ability runs in the Weatherwax family; a distant cousin, the ...

The best witches and the best wizards in Discworld have exactly one thing in common: they understand when not to use magic. Which is essentially all the time. "Headology" is Granny Weatherwax's word for psychology. She's not particularly good with long words. A lot of what she does is simply telling people what they need to hear. She'll tell a sick man to go on a daily pilgrimage to a certain ...

Anyhow, the term "headology" comes from those books and has actually become a fairly common term among witchy groups. Headology refers to making someone believe that something was done rather then doing it. In other words it's a placebo. So why would someone use headology rather than magic? Plenty of reasons.

Making use of Discworld's magick Headology is a folksy-sound word that combines psychology, ritual, and compassionate trickery. In the novel Maskerade, one of Discworld's oldest, wisest, and more acerbic witches, Granny Weatherwax, cures a man's backache using headology. When the man comes to her cabin, she gives him a special potion.

After Lord Voldemort's surprise visit to Hogwarts at the Halloween Ball, Professor Dumbledore deemed the school to be unsafe for students to remain within over the Christmas holidays. So, while he set about revamping the school's magical securities, all Hogwarts students were sent home for Christmas, and for those who usually stayed at school arrangements were made for them to stay with ...

Anyway, I woke up at 2:22am, which, oddly, I find amusing. I like patterns. Anyway, I woke up and I couldn't get back to sleep because I had an idea that wanted to get out. I imagined an example for this magic system concept. Headology, IE: witchcraft from Discworld. So, here's a proof of concept of my magic system idea and something you could use in a Discworld campaign if you wanted. Nice ...
I am looking for a "term" related to curses. The story it was used in was about a woman (a witch?) that was skilled at using words to make people believe they were cursed. She didn't need to put it in action, the words were enough and suficiently powerful that the one on whom they were cast believe it so much that the next missfortune that hit them made them atribute it to the curse. So it isn ...

Speeding through the English countryside was the Hogwarts Express, ferrying the current student body of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to a new term. The low-slung clouds hung grey and wet across the horizon, dappling the train windows with the occasional bout of early autumn rain. As the outside world went happily about its business, completely oblivious to the steam train passing ...
Esmerelda "Esme" Weatherwax (usually called Granny Weatherwax or 'Mistress Weatherwax' on formal occasions, such as when being addressed by not-yet witches (Tiffany Aching being the case in point) or Mrs. Earwig or Verence, King of Lancre (when he's being really 'King-y')) is a character from Terry Pratchett 's Discworld series. She was a witch and member of the Lancre coven. Granny Weatherwax ...
Witch magic is very different from the wizard magic taught in the Unseen University, and consists largely of finding the right lever that makes everything else work. Witches rarely do any magic, in fact, relying more on common sense, hard work, and a peculiar brand of psychology known as "headology". This can be taken very far - a witch's way of magically setting fire to a log of wood consists ...

The witches' guild is a gathering of crones and hags, biddies and busybodies, pagans and practitioners of the occult. Members of this guild are well versed in occult spellcasting, the preparation of potions, and the mysterious and womanly art of 'headology'.
If you've read any of Terry Pratchett's Disc World series and have met Granny Weatherwax, you know what "headology" is. If you've never heard of that crafty ol' witch, then you can pick up its meaning here. I just finished reading the Equal Rites piece of the series, thanks to a recommendation made to me by Annie, who used to blog and now just comments.
