Ethan Osland doesn't drink, smoke, or do hard drugs. He's been vegan for 26 years and works a physical job. But on February 16, he had a heart attack, the kind commonly known as 'The Widowmaker'.

Ethan Osland knew something was wrong as soon as he woke up. He was hyperventilating, drenched in sweat, and there was pain in his chest radiating through his torso.
When he got to the hospital, doctors told him he was having a major heart attack, the kind often given the nickname "the widowmaker", at just 45 years old.
"When they told me I was having a heart attack, I was like, 'No, that can't be happening, because I was just told four days ago that this is impossible'," said Ethan.
Four days earlier, Ethan had been in a dietitian's office running a test that would estimate the likelihood of him ever having a heart attack. The result was just 11 per cent. 
Ethan doesn't drink, doesn't smoke or do hard drugs. He's been vegan for 26 years. He worked a physical job as an instrument technician, touring with bands like Dallas Smith and Counting Crows, sometimes on his feet for 18 hours a day moving equipment and setting up gear. 
But he does live with four different sleep disorders, including severe sleep apnea and insomnia that have had a big impact on his life for more than a decade.  
"I knew something was going to happen eventually. I could feel it," said Ethan. "It felt like life was just sort of on this dimmer... Slowly going down and then the dark hit when the heart attack happened."
It turns out that his left anterior descending artery was 100 per cent blocked, and his right coronary artery had a 50 per cent blockage. He had an angioplasty procedure to clear the blockage in his left artery and a stent put in to keep the artery open.
"I feel like I've reverse aged by about 20 years," said Ethan. "Which is a bizarre thing to say [after having a heart attack]."
"But when your arteries don't flow freely you're basically suffocating your heart."  
Statistics from the Public Health Agency of Canada show that ischemic heart disease affects 3.7 per cent of Canadian men between the ages of 45 and 49, and that men are four times more likely to have a heart attack at a young age than women. 
Since his heart attack Ethan has discovered a family history that he didn't know about. All of his uncles on his mom's side have had heart attacks. 
"As men it's something we don't talk about," said Ethan. "I plan to reach out to all of my cousins. I wish I'd known."
His heart attack has also motivated Ethan to work to take more control over his health. While he doesn't yet know the extent of the long term damage to his heart, Ethan is walking every day and sleeping better than he has since he was in middle school. He still struggles to climb stairs.
He is excited to move forward and follow doctors' plans for his recovery. 
"I'm forty five and a half and cliches make sense!" said Ethan. "Every day is a gift. I'm here and I'm going to do whatever I can to have the best health that I can going forward."
