Believe it or not, back in the freewheeling days of the '90s, you couldn't just find porn anywhere you wanted on the Internet in a matter of seconds. Back in those days, you had to go out in public to seek it out or, at the very least, pay the money for some sort of premium cable network. That was back in the early days of HBO, when raunchy shows like Taxicab Confessions , Real Sex , Cathouse , and specials starring adult film star Katie Morgan were not so easily available.
But, as the L.A. Times reports , HBO has removed all of its erotic adult movies and TV shows from its channels and streaming services.
“Over the past several years HBO has been winding down its late-night adult fare,” an HBO representative told the L.A. Times . “While we’re greatly ramping up our other original program offerings, there hasn’t been a strong demand for this kind of adult programming, perhaps because it’s easily available elsewhere.”
It makes sense, especially when people would probably give up porn for a year just to see the final season of Game of Thrones right now.
As the Times reports, the adult programming on HBO originated in the early '90s, before it had become a home to prestige TV shows like The Sopranos . Since then, as HBO became a part of AT&T after the acquisition of Time Warner Inc., the adult content is not "a favorite of the new, strait-laced owners."
The Times also points out that porn is very popular and also very easy to find on the Internet.
RIP Cathouse . Now HBO subscribers will just have to watch The Deuce —a TV show about porn.

Now Reading The Horniest Movies On HBO Max

Once upon a time, before The Sopranos helped usher in the era of peak TV, HBO was known for its broadcast of popular films — and for the robust offering of, ahem, adult content in the late night hours. Then, the internet grew more and more popular and curious youths could do a simple Google search instead of sneaking downstairs to try to catch an episode of Cathouse or Taxicab Confessions or Real Sex . And HBO pivoted its brand to become synonymous with highbrow, expensive, scripted television, so the network began to lean less and less on its soft-core content. In 2018, HBO quietly removed its sexiest series from its streaming apps HBO Go and HBO Max , and the racy AF shows did not make the migration to HBO Max in 2020, either.
A spokesperson for the network told the Los Angeles Times that the decision to pull the explicit content wasn't necessarily for family friendly reasons, it was really due to popularity: “Over the past several years HBO has been winding down its late-night adult fare," the rep wrote. "While we’re greatly ramping up our other original program offerings, there hasn’t been a strong demand for this kind of adult programming, perhaps because it’s easily available elsewhere."
But while you can't get that explicitly sexy content on HBO Max, there are plenty of steamy movies available to watch on the streaming service. From classic '80s and '90s erotic thrillers to foreign imports — plus the ab-tastic cinema of Steven Soderbergh's Magic Mike . No, they're not necessarily as wall-to-wall adult-oriented as some other films, but listen — sometimes anticipation is as satisfying as the real thing. Plus, if you need more than that, you have the entire internet at your fingertips .

HBO still has plenty of sexy shows, and even full-frontal nudity -- including on " The Deuce ," " Game of Thrones " and " Westworld " -- but they've given up on their other late-night content.
According to TheWrap , HBO has quietly removed its erotic "after dark" movies and series. The cable network used to feature adult content like "Taxicab Confessions," "Real Sex," "Cathouse," and some "soft-core" feature films.
An HBO rep told TheWrap why they axed the XXX stuff:
"Over the past several years HBO has been winding down its late-night adult fare. While we’re greatly ramping up our other original program offerings, there hasn’t been a strong demand for this kind of adult programming, perhaps because it’s easily available elsewhere."
Yeah, you can get porn anywhere. Also, over the past few years, HBO has really elevated itself in terms of quality. It is regularly the Emmys frontrunner, and that does seem like the kind of area it might want to amplify.
That said, "The Deuce" Season 2 -- following the erection of the 1970s porn industry in NYC -- continues with Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Franco starting Sunday, September 9 on HBO.
