'I know that boyfriends and friends have suffered,' said Hayley Atwell on her dedication to her career
To get where she is today, Hayley Atwell has had to walk across burning coals.
She did it seven times to prove to herself she was capable of anything. She was nine years old at the time.
‘In the late Eighties my dad lived in California and he told me and my mum about fire-walking because he had just gone through the process.
‘Then he found out that the same people were bringing it to London and my mum got really excited. I thought: “If they can do it. I want to do it, too.”
‘I was the youngest person there. But I was completely focused.
‘You were given a plank of wood and told to write your fears or anxieties on it. I remember all the things I wrote on the plank.
'One was the name of a bully at school and the rest were about my fear that I wouldn’t become an actress because I didn’t know how to become one and I didn’t know anyone who was one. I also wrote down “rejection” and “failure”.
‘The planks were all then taken into a field and set on fire. They were left to burn down to embers and once they reached a temperature of 1,000 degrees they were ready.
‘I stood next to my plank and I could feel the heat singeing the hairs off my eyebrows. At that moment it was terrifying. But I did it, and then went and did it six more times.
‘There have been many moments in my life and in acting when I’ve thought back to that firewalk.’
Atwell, 32, is now one of Britain’s hottest actresses, if you’ll excuse the pun.
She has already achieved huge Hollywood success with roles in The Duchess (where she starred alongside Keira Knightley as Ralph Fiennes’s lover) and the Captain America franchise, and has been established in television for nearly a decade, since she first appeared in the acclaimed adaptation of Alan Hollinghurst’s The Line Of Beauty, which she followed up by stealing the show in the epic Any Human Heart.

But her first love remains the theatre. And tonight Atwell seeks to win the industry’s biggest prize at the prestigious Olivier Theatre awards, where she is shortlisted alongside Dame Judi Dench, Anna Chancellor and Lesley Manville in the best actress category for her role as Sylvia in The Pride, which played to rave reviews at London’s Trafalgar Theatre last year.
She is part of the new British wave that includes Ben Whishaw, Ruth Wilson, and Tom Hiddleston, a group that cleaves to the West End despite success in America.
Later this year, Atwell will star alongside André 3000 (best known as half of the hip-hop act OutKast) and Imogen Poots in a (British-made and British-based) film about the life of Jimi Hendrix.
Atwell plays his girlfriend, Kathy Etchingham, who inspired the guitarist’s songs Foxy Lady and The Wind Cries Mary.
‘There’s sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll and I loved playing her because she was so far from me.’
If Atwell’s upbringing wasn’t the full Hendrix experience it was certainly kooky, as born out by that firewalking story.
She was brought up in Notting Hill, west London. Her mother, Allison, worked as a motivational speaker and therapist and her American-born father studied American Indian folklore and shamanism, specialising in the benefits of natural medicines and rituals.
They split up when she was just two years old.
Hayley acknowledges her looks have helped: 'It would be ridiculous of me not to acknowledge that, but that's not all I want to be about' (pictured as Julia Flyte in Brideshead Revisited, 2008)
'They realised it wasn’t working between them, but being good parents to me was the priority. They got on, there was no animosity between them.
‘I lived in a very liberal environment and I was treated like a little adult, so I guess I was grown up in some ways as a kid.’
Her nickname at school was Hulk Hayley ‘because I wasn’t afraid to fight boys’, she laughs.
‘I played rugby, too. My two best friends were boys and they taught me how to fight. I was tough.’
There is a poignancy in the fact she is nominated for her incredible performance as two women in the play The Pride, alongside Judi Dench, at this year’s Olivier Awards – it was a performance of Dame Judi’s that transformed her life.
‘I wasn’t a particularly academic child but I worked really hard,’ she explains. ‘I found Shakespeare incredibly difficult to get to grips with, but during my GCSE year I was taken to two plays that completely changed me – Ralph Fiennes in Hamlet and Judi Dench and Ian McKellen in Trevor Nunn’s Macbeth.
‘What I didn’t understand on the page, I completely connected with during the performance on stage.
'I remember being totally spellbound by Judi and feeling my life had changed just by watching her act. I already knew I wanted to act, but when I saw her I knew she was the sort of actress I wanted to be.’

‘It’s amazing even to be nominated in the same category as her, and if she wins [the Olivier] I will be absolutiely thrilled. I’m in a category with incredible women. '
Since winning a place at drama school, Atwell has not stopped working.
She acknowledges her looks have helped: ‘It would be ridiculous of me not to acknowledge that, but that’s not all I want to be about.
‘There is pressure on women in this industry.
'There is pressure on women in general. We’re all on diets constantly, we all want to be 10lb lighter. But I don’t want to become one of those actresses who just focuses on that. I love to go out, eat and drink good wine. I love life.
‘To be honest, I think that is a lot sexier.
'In my time in Hollywood I have met a lot of good-looking men and women who’ve turned out to be incredibly boring because they don’t eat and they spend their lives in the gym.’
Does she foresee a time when she will slow down?
‘I think I went through my twenties working non-stop because you feel you have to take on everything you can to get yourself to a certain level.
'It’s a difficult balance to get, because you are helped and hindered by the “hot right now” label; you don’t want to stop because you might not be hot any longer and so you just run and run.
‘I know that boyfriends and friends have suffered. I’ve spent birthdays on my own on a movie set in Hungary or Budapest and I’ve missed friends’ weddings and family events because I’ve been working. I kept thinking: “And then I’ll get to a place where I can slow down.”
‘I’ve now decided I’m at that place. I still want to do movies but I love doing theatre in London because I’m so proud to be part of a theatre tradition. We have the best theatre in the world.’
After the Hendrix film, at some point in the near future, Atwell is planning to revisit the fire of her youth.
‘I remember playing Hedda Gabler at drama school and not having a clue how to get into the character and I did actually think of myself walking the fire.
'In a lot of ways it was my most important part because it got me my agent and it got me my start. I will definitely walk through fire again.’
The Olivier Awards with MasterCard is tonight at the Royal Opera House.
