Hawai’i Men’s Volleyball Secures Big West Championship Title

Honolulu, HI – April 12, 2025 – The University of Hawai’i men’s volleyball team clinched the Big West Championship in a thrilling five-set victory over defending champions UC Irvine, solidifying their dominance in collegiate volleyball this season.

The Rainbow Warriors (22-3, 9-1 Big West) battled fiercely at the Stan Sheriff Center, overcoming a resilient Anteaters squad in front of a sold-out crowd. After dropping the first set 23-25, Hawai’i stormed back with aggressive serving and stellar blocking, taking the next two sets 25-20 and 25-22. UC Irvine forced a fifth set with a 25-23 win in the fourth, but UH’s star outside hitter, senior Kana’i Akana, delivered a career-high 28 kills to secure the championship with a 15-12 final set.

'This team never quits,' said head coach Charlie Wade, who led the Warriors to their third Big West title in five years. 'The way they fought tonight shows the heart of this program. We’re not done yet—we’re hungry for more.'

Hawai’i’s victory earns them an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, where they aim to capture their first national championship since 2021. With a deep roster featuring All-American setter Tread Rosenthal and middle blocker Kurt Nusterer, the Warriors are considered top contenders.

The NCAA selection committee will announce tournament seedings next week, with Hawai’i expected to host early-round matches. Fans are already buzzing about a potential Final Four showdown with longtime rivals UCLA or Penn State.
