HashiCorp Solutions Engineering Blog - MediumHow to get the most out of multi-cloud certifications
Above are the HashiCorp certifications I earned, and in this blog, I’ll share some of the patterns I used to earn them. I will not be sharing any questions for the exam or providing hacks. I will offer something much better: aroadmap.
There is really no wrong place to start when adopting workflows to improve your day-to-day efforts. The same is true when deciding which certification to start with Terraform Associate, Vault Associate, or the Consul associate. Just think about your current role/interest: do you do more in provisioning (Terraform), connecting (Consul), or securing (Vault) and start there. I am going to proceed in the order I tackled the exams, but by all means, choose your own path. Just remember the word “certification” means, “a credential you earn to show that you have specific skills or knowledge.” As you read this make sure you obtain the skill and knowledge before sitting for the exam if you want the most out of the experience.
Terraform Associate
A good buddy of mine recommended a book that changed the way I looked at cloud computing. He recommended Terraform: Up & Running, 2nd Edition and I recommend starting there. Perspective is the most important thing you can offer an organization and the book is filled with perspectives and opinions on how to manage infrastructure as code. If you are not familiar with HashiCorp Language (HCL) check out my last medium article, Why I Believe HCL is Better than YAML. Make sure you contact a solutions engineer at HashiCorp and attend some workshops if you’re not already using Terraform Cloud or Enterprise in production. I went through all of the HashiCorp Learn Tutorials and they were well structured to provide hands-on experience and enough theory to expand ifneeded.
Join your local HashiCorp User Group (HUG) this is where you can hear from people who are running Terraform in production or aspiring to. Another great option to learn is to jump on the forum and try to help out the community on HashiCorp Discuss. I learned how to solve my own errors faster by helpingothers.
There is no shortage of content creators making courses on Terraform. I started with HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate 2022 then moved to More Than Certified In Terraform ending with HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate Practice Exam 2022 and passing my exam feeling confident.
Vault Associate
I used the same pattern as Terraform by reading the book: Running HashiCorp Vault in Production. Remember, enjoy the journey to learn! I always try to humble myself and admit how much I do not know when reading a good book. I used Bryan Krausen’s book as a guide and followed along trying to add value to all my active Vault projects. Next, I used HashiCorp Cloud Platform (HCP) Vault and followed along with the HCP Vault Learn Guide learning about the SaaS offering and when those use cases could provide business value. I created a custom Vagrant lab to replicate and practice all of the different Vault use cases listed in the documentation. Here is an example of a Vagrant lab to bring up a HashiCorp Vault cluster with a Consul backend. I ended my exam preparation by studying Bryan’s Vault content and checking out the HashiCorp Vault Associate Certification Guide. Afterward, not only did I pass the exam but felt comfortable leading the planning to run Vault Enterprise or HCP Vault in production.
Consul Associate
I just ordered a book I wish was out when I started learning consul from Rob Jackson, Simplifying Service Management with Consul. I found the HashiCorp Learn Guide for Consul and Bryan’s video that I purchased from Udemy to be enough to pass the Consul exam. If you’re looking for more hands-on Consul content after exhausting both resources I recommend you check out GitHub for a fun project. One I really like right now is Terraform-AWS-Consul-ECS, a new project to run Consul on AWS Elastic Container Service(ECS).
TL: DR—Certification Roadmap
- Find a goodbook
- Join the community
- Lab everyday
- Try tobuild
Goals
My goal this year is to advance my knowledge of HashiCorp Vault and validate that knowledge by getting the HashiCorp Professional Security Automation Certification. Tag me on LinkedIn or Twitter @cobra16319 when you get “certified!”
