Something went wrong. Wait a moment and try again.
Everything in life is difficult or easy depending on your efforts, passion for study and the desire to make it big. I am from a middle-class family and graduated with B.Com(Hons.) from St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata, in 1977. Due to family circumstances, I had to take up a job immediately, though I wanted to do Chartered Accountancy (CA) like scores of others in my college.
From 1977 to 1983 it was a tough grind being just an ordinary graduate. In the first quarter of 1983, I felt that I was stagnating in terms of salary and promotions and the future was looking extremely bleak. I knew that doin

From 1977 to 1983 it was a tough grind being just an ordinary graduate. In the first quarter of 1983, I felt that I was stagnating in terms of salary and promotions and the future was looking extremely bleak. I knew that doing CA, which involved three years of Articleship, was ruled out owing to my financial condition and the necessity to support my parents and younger brother in his studies. Meanwhile, my younger brother (there is an age difference of 7 years) had enrolled for B.Com(Hons.) in St. Xavier’s College and started his CA studies after a year in college.
I was never interested in ICWAI (presently ICAI). In the meanwhile, a friend expressed interest in studying the Company Secretaries (CS) course and brought me a copy of the Prospectus and the application form for assistance in filling. After it was done, I spent some 15 minutes going through the ICSI Prospectus and suddenly it hit me like a ton of bricks that the subjects were interesting and CS course was worth giving a try. Being exempt from the entrance exam (Foundation programme), I enrolled for CS Inter (executive programme). The sad part is that this friend quit the ICSI course midway after getting married.
For nearly three months, the study material was lying in its original package until I decided one Sunday morning that enough was enough and started preparing in real earnest for the exams. One of the most difficult things is to slog at studies for a professional exam six or seven years after graduation which is a really big gap. What made it even worse was that I had to slog in an office for 8 hours a day and then start studying after reaching home.
To cut a long story short, my younger brother (who is 7 years younger) qualified as a CA in May 1987 and I qualified as a CS in December 1987. After this, there was a long stint both in employment and practice in Kolkata till the first quarter of 2005. In the second quarter of 2005, I shifted to Tamil Nadu for good and, both personally and professionally, it turned out to be a good move with excellent employment opportunities. I continued in employment in mid-size and large companies, did a couple of IPOs apart from one in Kolkata, and finally retired in January 2016 after a fairly successful career.
Nothing comes easy in life and it takes a lot of patience, perseverance and iron determination to succeed. When I was four months past sixty-one, I decided to learn swimming to keep myself fit. Now after five months, I swim in a relaxed manner 6 days a week in an Olympic size swimming pool (50 meters in length and 7 feet in depth) and enjoy doing it. I nearly drowned three times but kept on drinking bottles of ‘Mountain Dew’ to bolster my courage because “dar ke aage jeet hai” (there is success ahead if you conquer fear). If you believe this, you will believe anything - I mean the “Mountain Dew”.
I have two grown-up children who are both engineers and MBAs and well established in their careers. This gives me more satisfaction and a sense of achievement since they did not have to go through all the trials and tribulations I went through in life. There is a certain inner strength that everyone has and all one needs to do is really stretch themselves to tap into it. The second thing I enjoy doing is drive my car at breakneck speeds in the wonderful highways of Tamil Nadu and have my wife scream that I have become totally insane !!!! God Bless !!!
1. Everything is easy, when you are crazy about it
And nothing is easy , when you are lazy about it.
These 2 rules apply in any professional courses like CA/CS/CMA.
1. Syllabus is more theoretical . Memorizing is tough when you have so much to read.
2. The syllabus is vast. You have to study regularly . This not an exam in which you can read at night just before exam and pass.
3. You have to keep yourself updated with recent case laws and amended regulations.
4. Revision is must. You have to keep revising what you have studied before a week or month.

5. The most irritating thing I ever faced is you don’t get a holiday for each paper :’(
(This is really not fair. Even board exam and CA exams are also conducted with holidays for each paper.)
6. There is no alternative of hard work. And even after hard work, luck is the most important element. Luck really matters.
If you like reading and if you can read 3-4 hours regularly; 9-10 hours before 1 month of exams then nothing is difficult.

As a secretary, you're in charge of keeping an office running smoothly in a professional environment. Depending on your industry, this could include anything from supporting colleagues to assisting clients to performing other administrative tasks.

When you start out as a secretary , you're most likely to land an entry-level administrative assistant role. In this position, you'll generally take on tasks related to correspondence, scheduling, and basic office support.

Many administrative assistant tasks are easy to tackle, but your grasp of the essential skills for the job will help you stand out among your peers. Develop these basic secretary skills to succeed in an entry-level position.

As any administrative assistant can tell you, clear communication is this position's most essential component. After all, almost every task you'll do relates to written or verbal correspondence. Advice : If your communication skills could use some work, try taking a writing or literature class to hone your ability to communicate thoughts clearly on paper or on the computer screen. Improvisational acting classes can also help you express thoughts verbally and think on your feet.

Decades ago, most secretaries used pen and paper or typewriters for memos and correspondence. Times have changed, however, and today's administrative assistants must demonstrate technological competence . You'll need to be able to use desktop computers, laptops, and smart devices to manage daily tasks. Advice : That isn't all, though. You'll also need to master basic word processing programs, email applications, and scheduling platforms. While you'll learn proprietary software on the job, you should already have a basic grasp of the essential technology needed for your position. Don't hesitate to read manuals or attend webinars to learn the basics.

All entry-level secretaries should also have basic customer service skills, which start with a sense of professionalism. Remember that no matter where your desk is located, as an administrative assistant, you're the face of the company. That means politeness and respect are essential qualities, whether you're dealing with clients or talking with colleagues.

Once you've mastered your entry-level job, you might have an opportunity to take on an administrative secretary job or another mid-level secretary role. Before you start applying for jobs, make sure you have these essential mid-level secretary skills.

Most mid-level secretaries are responsible for handling a mind-boggling amount of information. Depending on your office culture, this information might include paper files, electronic databases, or even verbal meetings.

Because your colleagues will depend on you to retrieve data efficiently, you'll need strong organizational skills. If you don't already have a preferred way of keeping things organized, educate yourself about desk accessories, software programs, and even workflow concepts that can help you keep everything under control.

As you take on more responsibilities in your mid-level secretarial position, time management becomes critical. Whether you report to a single supervisor or several superiors assign work to you on a daily basis, you need to juggle tasks effectively.

Advice : For most administrative secretaries, this means learning how to work smarter. Track how long it takes you to complete tasks, and learn what schedule optimizes your productivity. You'll quickly learn how to make the most of each workday.

When you achieve a mid-level secretarial role, you'll no longer be able to rely on superiors to make decisions for you. Instead, you'll have to problem-solve on your own. As a secretary, common problems could include anything from fixing scheduling issues to communicating with challenging clients.

Advice : Your office might have policies in place to guide your efforts, but you'll also have to hone your own problem-solving skills to get things done. To solve problems effectively, take the time to understand your company's goals and know what you can do to achieve them.

If you excel in this support-based industry, you might have what it takes to land a senior-level secretary job, such as an administrative supervisor . While these professionals certainly draw on essential secretary skills and tasks, they must also go above and beyond in almost every aspect of the job. Take your secretarial career to the next level by nurturing the skills for one of these senior administrative positions.

For an administrative supervisor, planning ahead couldn't be more important. In this role, you'll have more tasks to juggle, and you'll have a small staff to manage, too. That means you'll need to have a solid sense of your company's objectives and an understanding of what resources you have at your disposal.

Advice : If your planning abilities need work, try taking a course in project management. You'll learn how to juggle resources, allot time, and manage staff to complete both daily tasks and major projects on schedule.

As an administrative supervisor, you'll quickly learn that you don't get ahead by waiting around for things to happen. Instead, you'll need to take a proactive approach to everything on your to-do list.

Many senior-level secretaries find that creating proactive systems early on helps them succeed in this career. To develop this kind of workflow, anticipate problems that could arise and take the opportunity to address those issues head on. Doing this might require more time up front, but you'll save loads of time when you execute projects flawlessly.

Senior-level secretaries tend to deal with sensitive information, such as confidential records and private communications. To handle this kind of information effectively, you'll need a keen sense of discretion and the ability to maintain confidentiality. Pride yourself on your impeccable ability to keep a secret, and you might even land the opportunity to take on higher-paying opportunities that demand discretion.
