Pubic hair runs deep in my family... and probably long. Our history is bushy with secrets and revelations. In the 50s, my mother didn't hide her pubic hair from me. I'd accompanied her to the bathroom when she peed, and watched her dry off after her bath. I assumed all women had black pubes until, at the age of eight, I faced a flaming-red snatch. A divorced red-headed woman with a four-year-old lived next door. I was supposed to be watching him while she bathed. He ran into the bathroom, and I ran in after him, just as she rose from the tub. My absolute stupefaction at her fiery pubis stopped me in my tracks. She looked down at herself as if she'd encountered this sort of shocked behavior before, and then she took a deep breath and calmly told me to take the kid out. She was a nurse. A beautiful, smart nurse with a huge red bush.
If you were in college in the '70s, you may have let the hair on your legs grow to carpet-like density and considered cornrowing your armpit hair. Shaving my legs had been a rite-of-passage that forever separated me from my girlhood -- in my father's eyes, at least. The man never recovered. So, unlike my peers, I refused to stop shaving my legs or armpits, but compromised by letting my pubes curl out the sides of my bathing suit. I told people I was Italian.
Don't judge me too harshly. Consciousness-raising was all the rage on campus. Pelvic self-exams were cutting edge. All you needed was a plastic speculum. A roving nurse arrived at our meeting with a gooseneck lamp and a bored expression to show us how to use the speculum. She explained what we were looking at. We examined our own and one another's cervixes. While roughly similar, each was unique in its own way. The high point was one woman whose period was just beginning.
Weeks later, I was invited by the Dean of Women to team teach a class called "Modern Woman," at the University (Arizona State). The registrants were women returning to college after having children and putting their ex-husbands through school. I invited the bored nurse to do her thing; it was like a mission for her. She hustled her gooseneck lamp into a good position on a table and plugged it in. Then, in what seemed like one fluid motion, she got up on the table, spread her legs, slid the speculum in and reached out a free arm to adjust the light.
I invited the class to take a look. They got in line and one-by-one stood a good three-feet away. Some stood on their toes as if that would give them a better vantage point. No one got up close. I wished I'd brought binoculars. At the end of a very quiet queue -- I've heard more conversation at a viewing of a corpse -- I thanked the nurse. She gave me a disinterested shrug and strode off.
Needless to say, I got a flurry of phone calls from the school administration. The main complaint was that the nurse had shown her "pubic hair." She showed more than that, but no one was able to get past the external signs of an adult woman. I was not invited back to teach the class. As a matter of fact, I think it was never taught again, or even mentioned in polite circles.
Mom fostered my pubic hair élan not only by not hiding her body, but by showing me a shaved female pubis -- her own. It was 1957 and my brother was three-weeks overdue. Mom acquired a book that showed the stages of fetal growth inside the womb. The vaginal canal was depicted sans vulva and, of course, pubic hair. In those days, they "prepped" the mother for childbirth. This means they shaved her pubes, considering them unsanitary. Since my bro was late, she kept having to go back to be prepped. After one such appointment, she explained what they did. I must have looked perplexed because she asked me if I wanted to see. Of course I did. Her pubis was desecrated, thorny and with a five o'clock shadow that just looked criminal.
I told all the kids in the neighborhood who were so dismayed they told their moms who called my mom to say that Sandra Mae was talking about "down there" to anyone who would listen.
I owe this blog to the memory of my mom. Without her influence, I probably wouldn't have pubes, and I'd be just like everyone else.

THIS stunning young woman has embraced her natural body hair with the support of her understanding husband after ditching razors over a year ago and has been fighting against the strict beauty standards of smoothness ever since.
Like most females, secretary Sonia Cytrowska (28) from Gdynia, Poland first started to remove her body hair when she was 12 but thanks to airbrushing in magazines and on television, she constantly found herself comparing her hair to other girls who had more or less hair than her.
Just over a year ago, Sonia decided to stop shaving after she realised that she was removing her hair due to social pressures and finding out that many hair removal methods are bad for the environment and also time consuming. She would spend at least three hours every week to stay smooth which left her feeling down and insecure about her natural look. She started sharing pictures on Instagram under the hashtag, #bodyhairmovement .
Sonia admits that her husband, Tobiasz, of three years struggled with her natural appearance at first but said that their love conquered any of his confusion on the matter.
“I was looking at other body hair positive accounts and it was much easier for me to start my new, hairy life with support of others, both men and women,” said Sonia.
“I’ve been shaving since I was twelve and all my life I was feeling worse and less worthy than other girls who didn’t have so much hair on their bodies.
“I started my Instagram when I was still insecure about my natural look and I wanted to find other women who knew what I felt like and men who won’t be disgusted by my natural appearance.
“At first my husband was shocked because he’s known me for eight years and I was always shaving all my body. And actually, he prefers a shaved appearance but we talked a lot, I explained to him that it is so important for me, to live with my natural body hair and he decided to accept me and support me.
“There were tough times but conscious love and commitment won.
“The hardest thing was to accept myself and to feel confident with my hairy body in front of others, even if they whisper and stare at me. It was hard to accept that sometimes people can reject me if they will know how I really look like. Body hair in my society is a taboo”.
Sonia admits that she does still have days where she feels under pressure to look a certain way but she hopes that through social media she can show other women that having body hair is both normal and beautiful. She shared her advice to others.
“At home, with my husband or friends I feel safe and accepted. I can easily show my body hair and it is natural for me,” she added.
“But it is still hard when I meet new people, for example when I was searching for a new job or going to lectures at university.
“Sometimes there are days where I don’t care what anyone in this world is thinking about my body hair, because I fell in love with my natural body and I believe that every woman should have a choice.
“I choose not to shave because I find myself beautiful and it’s very comfortable to live that way but of course days where I question why I choose to fight with all these beauty standards and ask why I am so stubborn.
“I receive a lot of messages from women who are at the very point where I was one year ago. I talk with them, sometimes we send pics and we support each other.
“My biggest dream is to see women shaved and women with unshaved body hair in the streets of big cities. Both accept each other, because what they do with their body is their choice.
“I hope that my account shows to other women that body hair is beautiful and normal. You can be an independent woman, working in a large corporation, studying in your dream direction, be loved by husband and still have a hairy and natural body.
“My kind of advice is if you are afraid of losing your friends or partner, think about whether you want to live with people for whom you have to pretend to be someone you are not.
“This thought helped me break through at the beginning of my #bodyhairmovement journey.”

A terrifying bust of tyrant Josef Stalin looms in the background of one photo as a naked man stands before a table of Red Army officers
Astonishing black-and-white photos have surfaced showing naked recruits undergoing medical exams before joining Joseph Stalin's Red Army.
In one snap, a naked man stands before a table of officers as they inspect him for any abnormalities - as a terrifying bust of Stalin glares over them all.
The year is 1930 and the man has been drafted into the Red Army to fight for the USSR.
Next to Stalin's unsightly head a poster reads: "The most important basis of our army is that it is the army of liberation of the Working and the Peasants, it is the army of October Revolution, the army of the dictatorship of the proletariat."
The chilling images of young Russian men being medically examined were taken after they had been conscripted to fight for the Red Army.
The pictures show nervous-looking men being eyeballed by officers and nurses to check their physical condition.
In military registration and enlistment offices, doctors and nurses can be seen carrying out medical tests such as weighing, measuring and listening for a heartbeat.
The images were taken between 1920 and 1940 as the Soviet top brass built their Red Army, officially known as the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army, pejoratively referred to as the Red Horde.
During World War II, the Red Army was perhaps the most decisive land force for the Allies that consisted of Britain, France and the US.
It was the Red Army that accounted for a whopping 80 per cent of casualties suffered to the Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS, and it was they who ultimately captured the Nazi German capital, Berlin.
Not to mention their invasion of Manchuria which contributed heavily to the unconditional surrender of Imperial Japan.
The Red Army was officially formed on January 28, 1918, and condition of entry was "the support of the coming Socialist Revolution in Europe".
Those early Soviet forces mainly consisted of peasants.
The families of those who served were guaranteed rations and assistance with farm work.
Because of this, recruitment centres were flooded with men and women trying to join up.
However, when the Soviet Union was formed they were at war with their enemies immediately so on the 23rd February 1918 they began drafting recruits.
It was christened Red Army Day and it is still a national holiday in Russia, now known as Defender of the Fatherland Day.
The Red Army went on to become a feared force in World War II, however not without its problems.
After Stalin rose to power in the 1920s he began purging officers leaving them hamstrung with inexperienced leaders.
In 1937, just two years before the start of the Second World War, Stalin dismissed over 11,000 officers and many other high-ranking army chiefs who he thought were enemies.
In 1946, the word "red" was removed from the name of the army, marking the end of an an era.
Stalin saw the Soviet Union through World War II and its post-war reconstruction and famine, and the beginnings of the Cold War.
After years of failing health, he died in March 1953 due to a cerebral haemorrhage.
His death is shrouded in mystery more than 60 years on.
There are still claims he may have been murdered, and possibly even poisoned with warfarin, a rat poison, in a bid to avert a war with the US.
It is estimated that the World War II fatalities of the Soviet Union was 27 million civilians and armed service members.
