No Shave November has nothing on the new, budding women's movement, Janu-Hairy.
This month, women all over world are putting down their razors, waxing strips, tweezers, thread, lasers and everything else we use to pluck, pick and remove hair and going au naturale. For some, it's empowering to go against the grain and our society's fixation with female hairless bodies. It's natural, so if you've got it, flaunt it. For others, seeing visible armpit and leg hair still creates discomfort. When you've spent years desperately attempting to rid your body of hair, being photographed with armpit hair on the red carpet requires getting over your own conditioned disapproval and a negative response from the public.
Julia Roberts ' 1999 armpit reveal at the Cannes premiere of Notting Hill is a classic case. Although the Homecoming actress told Busy Phillipps that her visible body hair "wasn't a statement," twenty years later, she can still vividly remember the moment it happened and the resulting photo that made world news. It spurred that much conversation.
"When I was a younger woman, I thought it was a statement," Busy said. "I thought it was really punk rock and cool."
Two decades later, however, millennial and Gen-Z women are agreeing with Busy. Fueled by the ability to be as authentic as possible, these stars consistently bring their cultural beauty traditions, statement-making fashion and body hair to the red carpet. Unlike Julia's accidental reveal in the '90s, Miley Cyrus , Paris Jackson , Amandla Stenberg and more are making a very clear statement in the era of #MeToo and other pushes for female equality: Body hair is a natural, and thus should be accepted. In fact, it's cool.
In honor of the sentiment and Januhairy, check out what the stars that are getting behind the push for body hair acceptance below!
Cheers to the woman that started it all. Back in 1999, the Homecoming actress took to the Cannes Film Festival red carpet wearing a red sequined
Before it was cool, the '90s sitcom star revealed her body hair on the Golden Globes red carpet with pride. Pulling her dress up and laughing, the actress let it be known that she's not ashamed.
This singer does not care about shaving her legs. Last year, when asked how her partner Simon Konecki feels about the star gave the ultimate clapback : "He has no choice," she retorted. "I'll have no man telling me to shave my f**kin' legs. Shave yours."
The Hate U Give actress, who doubles as an activist, made a major statement at the European premiere of the movie late late year. In a beautiful black gown and flawless beauty, the star posed to reveal the natural hair under her arms.
Everyone was talking about Michael Jackson 's daughter's bold style at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards, which included a Dior ensemble and body hair.
The star has demonstrated herself as a champion for the movement by posing on the carpet with visible body hair multiple times and posting the iconic 1999 photo of Julia Roberts on her Instagram. She captioned the photo, "Beautiful in every way."
While the CFDA Fashion Awards is one of the top fashion events of the year, the Girls actress made a serious statement about her style by wearing her armpit hair with pride in 2015.
Her sister agrees, revealing her body hair at the 2017 Golden Globes.
If you're joining the movement, at least you know that Hollywood is on your side!

Throughout our history, there have been countless beauty trends . Just these couple last years gave us the squiggle brow, glittery butts, fur nails, faux freckles, and unicorn everything. If you'd wish to dig deeper in the older days, you'd find such trends as dyeing tour teeth black a la Japanese, eating absolutely deathly arsenic for skin whitening, and removing the eyelashes in Middle ages just to name a few. But what about keeping it au naturel ?
Alongside the over-the-top makeup trends goes the liberating natural beauty trend. And believe it or not, hairy women, or hairy armpits to be exact, is the new it. Many Instagram influencers have posted pictures, proudly showing their ungroomed armpit hair. Some of them have even begun dying their armpit hair, receiving plenty of praise and criticism for inventing new beauty standards in the process.
Girls with hairy armpits declare this trend as a form of feminism , because why should you shave for somebody else? For some women, cultivating body hair is a way to protest the beauty and maintenance standards placed upon them by society. Indeed, even photographers like Ben Hopper have used armpit-haired models to communicate this message.
Before 1915 and the advent of women's shaving marketing campaigns , even pinups often sported all of their body hair and women with hairy armpits were absolute norm. As they say, there are no friends in taste!

I have no problem with armpit hair. BUT. I hate it when they let their facial hair go , like eyebrows and their 5 o'clock shadow. It would not stop me from loving a person.
For anyone who has felt the need to not only go through this article (revealing at least an iota of interest), but to then post in a negative and derogatory manner, you are the societal ill that has perpetuated artificial beauty and cultural standards over the last century; your offense only proves there is a pervasive attitude that needs to shift.
She does wax her brows tho, so what's the point!
Finally, natural gets back! Good, I love this!
okay now the new trend is to color your armpit hair.. right..??
i like it but if i meet a woman who shaves it and she wants to fuck:i"ll say yes for me i like hair but no hair wouldn't say i won't fuck
They have to put up with men's hairy pits, why can't we?
Hairy armpits does not mean they don't shower.

This is trend really awesome! However I think it is irrelevant wether it's a woman or a man who's showing armpit hair.
It's a real society fail when something what's naturally on everyone's body is called disgusting. Armpit (also pubic) hair is natural part of skin flora. It's still being explored but there is scientificla proof that most of our "unwanted" hair has impact on our imune system as they catch microbes and don't let them cause skin diseases and reach blood.
@darata:you're so right don't let the negative comments touch you i support you
I love the natural girl/ woman with hairy armpits (and more). Big point || that seems to be missed ... from your hair growth you (we all) emit and collect our natural pheromones which smells (if you do not deodorize) ‘who you are’ and THIS IS WHAT ATTRACTS ME TO YOU (the female).. I don’t want you to cover up. I WANT to smell the beast in you - HUGE TURN ON!!!!!!
So, you won't mind if I stop shaving my face...
Guys with facial hair are cool, dude. :)
Some employers require you to, but if they do you yell at them to stop oppressing you or you're going to sue for gender discrimination. After all, if women in the workplace can go around showing off their scraggly armpit hair in sleeveless dresses or grow out a thick beard, why shouldn't men be allowed to let the hair on their face grow naturally at the office? For that matter, why do men have to wear stuffy two or three-piece suits and sweat profusely while women don't have to wear a wool jacket on top of a dress shirt and undershirt.
Well...I probably won't join the trend but I don't think it is disgusting or something, it is their choice (and it is easy to break with this trend, not like the other more invasive trends, tunnel earrings f.ex.) :)

As a self-proclaimed fat woman herself, Brazilian photographer Mariana Godoy wants to rid the negative stigma from the word "fat" and show that fat can be just as beautiful as any other body type.
Godoy's new photo series " Empoderarte Me ," translated as "Empowering Me," features plus-size women posing in lingerie. Some of the images feature the women with different slogans written on their bodies to protest fatphobia and encourage body love.
"The fat woman is so sexy and beautiful," Godoy told The Huffington Post. "I want people to see that the word 'fat' is not an insult but a compliment. Being fat and loving your body is amazing."
The images are undeniably powerful because each woman looks comfortable and happy in her own skin. "I chose lingerie because photographs of fat woman in lingerie are rare, so this was a form of protest and self-acceptance," Godoy told The Daily Mail .
Godoy told HuffPost that "being fat is a fight" that she's dealt with her entire life. "There is a lot of prejudice against the word fat there... people judge and condemn fat people," Godoy told Cosmopolitan.com . "This is a fight I really want to win."
Take a look below at some of Godoy's gorgeous images of women reclaiming the word "fat."
The images below may be considered NSFW to some viewers.
