The E(pit)ome of Women Empowerment! Stars Who Ditched the Razor and Put Their Armpit Hair on Full Display

Shaving is the pits, which is why these badass female celebs ditched their razors and opted to go au naturel. From Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga to Bella Thorne and Beyoncé , we’re feeling hella inspired to break societal norms, too.
Actress Julia Roberts made armpit hair a major statement when she arrived at the 1999 premiere of Notting Hill wearing a short sleeved pink sequined gown that showed how she hadn’t shaved in quite some time. She was 31 years old and the biggest movie star in the world, so showing off her au natural armpit hair proved to be quite a seminal hygiene moment .
America’s Sweetheart didn’t intend to let it all hang out when it came to her shaving habits . It turned out she hadn’t tested her garment out to see how much of her underarm would show when she lifted up her hands to wave at the premiere’s fans.
“I just hadn’t really calculated my sleeve length and the waving and how those two things would go together and reveal personal things about me,” Julia told host Busy Philipps during a November 2018 appearance on Busy Tonight . “So, it wasn’t so much a statement, as it’s just part of the statement I make as a human on the planet, for myself.”
Madonna has lived for shocking fans with her antics through during her four-decade career. That includes flaunting her natural underarm hair. The Queen of Pop has flashed her unshaved look in numerous Instagram photos over the years, and now her daughter Lourdes Leon is following in her footsteps . The model has posted plenty of professional photos and personal ones to her social media proving she doesn’t use a razor very often.
Actress and activist Alyssa Milano has been going razor-free for years now. She won praise from fans in 2005 while attending the Next Generation Xbox Revealed party with noticeable dark stubble underneath her arms. Flash forward to 2021, and Alyssa is still rocking the look, but with even longer armpit hair. In a June 5, 2021, Instagram post, Alyssa raised her arm above her head while wearing a lacy red halter top. “ Armpit hair, don’t care,” she proudly wrote in the caption!

Madonna’s daughter showed that she hasn’t shaved her underarms in quite some time when she showed off her long growth at the 2021 Met Gala on September 13, 2021.

In 2016, Alyssa Milano took to Twitter to share a body-positive message to fans. “ # IveLearnedToAccept my hairy arms,” she wrote. People quickly rallied around the actress in support. “It’s part of what makes you beautiful. Can’t understand why women are made to think they must remove the hair to be attractive?” one person asked, while another added, “Sexy as f–k. Leave everything as is.” Amen!

The Bachelor Nation alum posted a series of images and videos on her Instagram Story in 2018 about what to do with her armpit hair. The first was a photo with a poll asking commenters if she should shave. The options were “I <3 the patriarchy” vs. “All natural, baby.” However, she followed the poll up with a second image, captioned, “Jk ladies, no shame! If smooth pits make you feel pretty, do it. If you don’t mind the hair, do it.”
In November 2018, Bella shared several of pics on Instagram of two icons who embraced their body hair before her. The first pic was when Julia Roberts walked the red carpet for the Notting Hill premiere in 1999, waving at fans with her underarm hair in full view. In the second photo, Madonna posed for the camera in a black bustier while lifting her arm. The carousel then concluded with a pic of Bella onstage, raising her arms at the crowd with the caption, “Beautiful in every way.” We couldn’t agree more!

Speaking of Julia Roberts, the now 51-year-old finally explained the reasoning behind the infamous moment on Busy Tonight . “The picture is vivid in my mind actually from that moment,” she explained in November 2018. “I think I just hadn’t really calculated my sleeve length and the waving, and how those two things would go together and reveal personal things about me.”
If I were a boy … or a girl! Beyoncé DGAF about gender stereotypes. Why? Because she rocked a lil 5 o’clock shadow at the Cadillac Records premiere in 2008.
Looks like the pop princess forgot to shave before hitting the red carpet! Hey, it happens to all of us.
Underarm hair? Didn’t notice! We were too distracted by Drew Barrymore ‘s bright purple eyeshadow that transported us right back to the early 2000s. As if!
The stunning star put a troll on blast after they tried shaming her subtle armpit hair by adding an “LOL” sticker over it. “It’s an armpit you’ve put a sticker over,” the 24-year-old shot back. “Not sure what else there is here to explain?” You tell, ’em!

The songstress, 34, admitted to using cocaine in the past and credits her now ex-husband for her quiet life in the English countryside. “One of the many amazing things about my husband is that he came along just at the right moment when things could have really gone south,” she revealed in 2014.

“I saw how popular girls had to behave to get the boys. I knew I couldn’t fit into that,” Madonna told Harper’s Bazaar in 2011. “So I decided to do the opposite. I refused to wear makeup, to have a hairstyle. I refused to shave. I had hairy armpits.”
She’s just being Miley! The Internet went wild in 2015 when the “We Can’t Stop” songstress revealed her grown-out underarm hair on Instagram. Weeks later, she dyed her fringe a summery shade of hot pink. At the time, Miley and hair colorist Justin Anderson had a “pit party” where they documented the bleaching process on Instagram.

No shame in her long hair game! The 21-year-old daughter of Michael Jackson received so much backlash for posting pics of her natural ~lewk~ that she addressed the haters on her Instagram Story in 2017. “People are really mad. I wish I could post some of these responses,” she said at the time.

Now Reading Photos Celebrating Natural Pubic Hair (NSFW)
It had its heyday in the '60s and '70s, but natural female pubic hair has since fallen out of favor. So much so that, apparently, there are now sexually-active hetero men who say they've never seen it . To celebrate the neglected bush, artist Marilyn Minter spent six months photographing it, asking "all kinds of women, [with] different hair colours, different textures, different skin colours" to grow out their natural hair down there and bare it for her camera. The photographs Minter took are collected in her first book, Plush .
"Over the last decade, pubic hair has all but disappeared in popular culture (which is fine)," Minter explains to us, "but I became interested in showing beautiful images of pubes as an alternative perspective. I suspect the no-fur trend might be a fashion, so I wanted to remind younger generations that fashion is fleeting, but laser is forever. Do whatever you want — just don't laser!"
The 70 full-colour images in Plush , released in a limited run by Fulton Ryder Press to coincide with Art Basel Miami Beach, make an eloquent visual argument against lasering — and maybe even against shaving. Sensuous and unabashed, they're perhaps the most powerful interpretation of "Long hair, don't care" we've ever seen. In Minter's words, "Bush is beautiful. Bring it back!"
