From hair growth to beating stress and anxiety, regular scalp massages can help you in many ways ( 1 ). Let us take a look at what scalp massages can do for you and the right way to do it.
Massages are a good way to relax your body and mind. They also help relieve anxiety and stress that are known to trigger hair loss.
A study conducted on 9 men for 24 weeks showed that gently massaging your scalp everyday for a few minutes can give a person thicker hair ( 2 ).
Several studies also suggest that massaging your scalp regularly or on a daily basis can reduce hair fall and help regrow your hair. Massages are said to strengthen follicles and stimulate hair growth.
Alopecia is an autoimmune disease that causes the hair to fall off in patches and sometimes, can result in total hair loss of the scalp. Self-reported findings have suggested that 69 per cent of men and women with alopecia have been able to regrow their hair with regular scalp massages.
Since years, this form of massage has been immensely popular to stimulate hair growth.
You can ask your mom or somebody else at home to pass on a helping hand as well. You could even visit a licensed massage therapist, if you have the time for it.

Essential oils which are extracted from plants are known to aid in hair growth, regulate sebum production and control dandruff ( 3 ). They have been used for ages to address hair and scalp concerns ( 4 ). You can massage your scalp with essential oils once or twice a week.
Essential oils can be strong and should always be diluted in a carrier oil. Conduct a patch test before applying to your scalp, if you have sensitive skin .
The ideal frequency depends a lot on why you’re doing it. If you want to improve your hair growth or thickness, massaging your scalp (without oil) with your fingers 2 times everyday is recommended. For relaxation and to relieve stress, you can just massage your scalp whenever you feel like.
Massaging your scalp everyday will enhance blood circulation and can even strengthen your follicles. However, make sure you do it gently and don’t rub vigorously. This can cause your hair to break.
In case you have used an oil while massaging your scalp, make sure you rinse it off within an hour. Oiling your scalp everyday is not recommended as it attracts dirt. Also, using shampoo to rinse off the oil is important. However, shampooing everyday can also remove essential oils and moisture from your scalp. Thus, oiling and shampooing twice a week would be ideal.

Which means, you can increase hair growth with 5 minute nightly massages. Just follow these techniques, which form part of the training of professional masseuses and hairdressers.
Massage for hair growth: techniques that boost hair growth
Use this combination of tried-and-tested techniques to ensure that your nightly massage routine helps your follicles to flourish. Any of the techniques below can be used to massage your favourite oils into your scalp and they also work well when applying deep conditioning treatments.
Blending the different strokes allows your scalp to get all the benefits unique to each technique. You can vary the combination, but remember to use the Effleurage Technique to start and finish your massage session.
Using your fingertips only, starting from the front hairline, spread both hands across your scalp, pressing through your hair. Smoothly apply pressure as your fingertips travel downwards to your nape (the end of your hairline, just above your neck). Stroke your scalp repeatedly, at the beginning and end of your massage routine.
This is a deep massage, using, as always, the tips of your fingers in a slow, circular motion. Work repeatedly from the centre of your front hairline, all over your scalp, till the back of your neck. It’s like kneading your scalp, only softer.
Spreading your fingertips apart, perch your hands on your scalp and in short vertical lines apply firm pressure up and down, before changing position of your hands to work in the opposite direction so that your entire scalp benefits from the massage.
Quickly and lightly, rub your scalp with the pads of your fingers from the front of your hairline to your nape, to stimulate your blood flow. Be careful of your fingernails, and note that this massage technique is highly optional, as some tend not to enjoy the vibrating feeling that the friction technique creates.
Mind your fingernails – if the nails snag your hair then stop!
This is the light tapping of your scalp with either the side of your hands or fingertips. Make sure you work your tapotement all over your scalp.
Note, massages are never supposed to hurt, or cut. And they should only be done on a healthy scalp, that is free from infection, soreness, and/or bleeding.
If you suffer from a medical condition, have high blood pressure, or if your doctor has advised you not to undertake any massages then don’t massage your scalp.

Find a relaxing place to sit. Choose a comfortable chair with a solid back that can support your weight. Put your phone on silent and minimize background noises. You may even want to dim the lights a bit.

You’ll likely be sleepy and relaxed after the massage. Consider doing it two or three times per week before you go to bed.

Choose a carrier oil. You shouldn’t put undiluted essential oils directly on your scalp. Instead, add 8-10 drops of the essential oil of your choice to about 2 tablespoons (30 ml) (28 g) of your chosen carrier. [10]
