Synopsis:

Hasegawa Kodaka has transferred schools, and he's having a hard time making friends. It doesn't help that his blond hair tends to make people think he's a delinquent. One day, he runs into his bad-tempered solitary classmate Yozora while she's talking animatedly to her imaginary friend Tomo. Realizing that neither of them have any actual friends, they decide that the best way to alter this situation is to form a club and start recruiting.
That is how "Rinjinbu", The Neighbours' Club, was formed, a club specifically designed for people who don't have very many friends. As other lonely classmates slowly join their little club, they'll try to learn how to build friendships through cooking together, playing games, and other group activities. But will this group of relationship-challenged misfits really be able to get along?

Main Characters:

Yozora Mikazuki

🇯🇵 三日月夜空

Character ID: 37513

About Character and Role:

Birthday: December 24
Height: 162 cm (5'4")

Yozora Mikazuki is the female deuteragonist in the Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai series. She is the founder, first member, and club president of the Neighbor's Club. Prideful and easily provoked by nature, Yozora detests "normals" and that is the reason why Yozora doesn't have any friends along with the fact that she's a natural loner. She also preferred to have an "air friend", whom she calls "Tomo-chan" but decided to make a club to make friends. She is a cruel and selfish black-haired girl who says she understands and respects bullying but resents being called a bully herself. Yozora's difficult personality drives away anyone who might wish to make friends with her before she meets Kodaka. She dislikes individuals who act friendly over their first interaction, a trait she also shares with Sena, due to the suspicion of treachery and betrayal in the end. Yozora is also very prone to depression whenever she's at a state of loss to the point where her pessimism gets the best of her. Still, Yozora is very selfless and is willing to throw away her reputation and even her very own safety to lend a helping hand to the people who share her pain and past experiences as a neglected loner. Yozora is very smart, she had high results on the semestral tests and even scored full marks on one of them (Modern Japanese). She also has quite a good understanding of people combined with mentioned intelligence and acting skills, which lets her effortlessly outsmart and manipulate her fellow club members. Yozora also has great leadership skills and she is good athletically too.

She is physically abusive towards, and often argues with, Sena and manipulative towards Maria, who she cons into giving up an empty room for the use of the Neighbor's Club, and Yukimura, who she fools into working for the club as a cross-dressing cosplay maid. The only person she can't insult is Rika, as Rika takes whatever insult she gives her and deflects it back with a dirty joke that leaves her tired to the point where she just does what Rika says (like crossdress for example) rather than argue. The reason why Yozora throws verbal offenses at Sena is that she thinks of her as a primary example of a riajuu (normals/popular people), since she pities them, which is one of the reasons why she founded the Neighbor's club. She even looked at Hinata Hidaka, the Student Council President, as the King of the Normals (King Lear). All the while seeing the title to be unfit for Sena after she claimed that the latter isn't as "normal" or "popular" as she thinks she is, after their long period of being together in the Neighbor's Club.

Yozora has a mild anti-social personality, she values privacy greatly and hence, dislikes parlors (which is the reason why she has kept her hair so long) and crowded areas (to the point where it will be nauseating for her). As such, Yozora dislikes talking about more sensitive matters like careers and romance. Yozora also claims to have a soft spot for children although her treatment towards Maria seems to indicate the opposite, though, she did that mainly because of Maria's haughtiness and rudeness towards Yozora when she wanted to use the chapel as a club-room. In Haganai CONNECT, it was revealed that she is looked up to by a boy (Wakagi Mitsuta) who often visits the bookshop she works at, where she is seen as an older sister figure. Whenever Mitsuta has trouble with school or something else, he will go and ask for her advice and Yozora will try to give what she thinks is the best, even if it regarding something she dislikes (romantic themes). Mitsuta is also Kobato's classmate and has a girlfriend named Miki.

Despite the fact that she has a tendency to strongly disagree with Sena's decisions, even she can admit to a degree when she goes too far and has apologized on a few occasions. Also, while not easily seen, Yozora can be in fact far more sensitive than what she lets people know, as demonstrated when playing an Otome game recommended by Rika, in which Yozora found her character all alone and started crying sadness, seemingly seeing herself on the character in question.

The main reason why she established the Neighbor's Club was to try to get closer to Kodaka but she was also seemingly just as conflicted as Kodaka about the relationship of the club members. She does treasure the Neighbor's Club deeply, as she has become warmer. Two examples would be when she decided to cancel the movie planned for the School Festival due to Rika catching a cold out of overwork, claiming that if they, the seven members of the Neighbor's Club, could not watch it together, it would be pointless. An act that was fully respected by the whole club. She also protected Kobato's club membership from Aoi Yusa.

She is Kodaka's childhood friend, though, at the time, he believed that she was a boy, calling her "Sora"; her nickname for him was "Taka." On the day that Kodaka moved, she intended to wear a skirt and reveal her gender to him but was too embarrassed to do so. She seems to have feelings for Kodaka. After her experience in losing "Night", a cat she and Kodaka found ten years ago under an abandoned temple, and Kodaka's sudden disappearance during their childhood (which Yozora was unaware of), Yozora was traumatized by the fact of not establishing bonds with other people to avoid getting hurt, hence, she is very cautious about her well-being, which is likely to be one of the reasons why she doesn't have friends.

Yozora still treasures the time of being childhood friends with Kodaka in the past saying she would rather choose the time where she and Kodaka were still friends than the present and would get angry at anyone who disrespects it. As shown when Sena points out that their friendship is 'ancient history' and that she should focus on the task assigned to her, causing Yozora to get furious with Sena, to the point where it ended with her bursting into tears and leaving the club-room, but not before saying something aloud to Sena, much to the shock of everyone, especially Kodaka. And according to the latter, the memories of them from 10 years ago is what kept Yozora going in being her usual self.

It is implied throughout the novel but is finally revealed in volume 7 that the only reason Yozora made the club was to spend time alone with Kodaka; and that she had no interest in gaining friends in the first place

Despite the fact that Yozora is a main character, not much is known about her background. Other than her childhood with Kodaka, almost nothing is known about her home situation, family, and other things involving her background unlike Kodaka and Sena, where you know much more about.

Character ID: 37512

About Character and Role:

The protagonist, a transfer student who has not been able to make friends in his first month at St, Chronica's. Of all of the members of the club, he is the most gentle, balanced and socially competent in personality; but his unusual hair color, inherited from his late English mother, leads classmates to assume he is a violent and abusive delinquent and spread defamatory rumors about him. Because of his long experience of antagonism, Kodaka has become accustomed to fighting and can defend himself quite well. His father is working in the United States, and so he takes care of his younger sister alone at home, which has also made him a good cook. His childhood was characterized by frequent movement, and as a result he has few memories related to home life and close friendships; however, though he does not realize it at first, he and Yozora were childhood friends before his family moved. In Volume 7 of the Light Novel, it was revealed that Kodaka and Sena are fiancés betrothed by their father's which Sena fully accepts. In the end of Volume 7 it is shown that Kodaka has been aware of the feelings of those around him for a very long time but plays ignorant because he fears losing the feeling of friendship that he wanted for such a long time. In Volume 8, Kodaka asks Rika to be his friend. This is the first time Kodaka has made a true friend in a decade since Yozora.

Sena Kashiwazaki

🇯🇵 柏崎星奈

Character ID: 37514

About Character and Role:

Height: 164 cm (5'5")

Sena Kashiwazaki is the female tritagonist of the Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai series. She is the first recruited member of the Neighbor's Club and the daughter of Tenma Kashiwazaki, headmaster of St. Chronica's Academy. Her wealth, beauty, and outstanding academic and athletic performance have made her popular among male students, and likewise, have made her an outcast among girls. Starting from high school, Sena continuously took first place in all tests, exams, and competitions. A year prior to the start of the story, Sena in her freshman year of high school, won multiple athletic events in the school annual festival. She entered the 200-meter race, cavalry battle, the scavenger hunt race, the obstacle race, the bread-eating race, the marathon, winning all of them effortlessly.

Before joining the Neighbor's Club, Sena didn't have any female friends, because she is envied by other girls, due to her good looks and popularity with the opposite sex. Despite being constantly surrounded by boys (who, according to her, are "doormats"), all she wants are true friends, which drove her to join the Neighbor's Club. Sena shows a dislike of all things "ordinary."

On the outside, Sena appears to be an ordinary high school girl, but in truth, Sena is arrogant and prideful by nature and she is well aware of this. Sena considers herself to be the school queen or goddess and so often she treats her male classmates only as servants to be used, although many of them would like to be her boyfriend. Nonetheless, she holds Kodaka to a higher standard. Sena also believes that there are two types of girls; the ones who are willing to be her friends and the others who are not worthy of her. Sena also does not treat the boys in her class with much respect due to them constantly ogling her, and slavishly doing whatever she tells them to. However, whenever Sena's ego is shaken by someone (usually Yozora), she bursts into tears and flings childish insults before running away. Sena was surprised to see that Kodaka does not act like the boys in her class (wanting to be stepped on) and hence, views Kodaka in a different light. She first saw him in this different light when he rescued her from some guys who were harassing her at a public pool. Since then, her feelings have increased to the point where she nonchalantly admits that she wouldn't mind marrying him and that she is in love with him. Her father was the best friend of Hayato Hasegawa, and because of this, some time in her early childhood Sena met Kodaka Hasegawa (though both of them couldn't remember this).

Sena enjoys playing video games—including dating sims and eroge—partially because they allow her to make female (if virtual) friends. She is a perfectionist by default. Sena always tries her best at everything and is willing to go to great lengths to do something perfectly (once playing a video game without sleeping until she had finished it). Sena gets so involved in her games that she becomes very angry if they are insulted in any way. She becomes extremely engrossed in things she is interested in, sometimes to beyond reasonable levels (as seen with her grudge against Yozora), while completely ignoring things she is not interested in. She possesses both the confidence and the means to pursue whatever she may desire. Sena is very gullible and often fails to see through the tricks Rika and Yozora play on her, even when the resulting humiliation is plain to see, (an example being the "heap" hairstyle). She only realizes her mistake when her father or some other person points it out to her. Yozora calls her "Meat" (Niku) an insulting nickname which she secretly likes because it is the first she has ever received. Her father is a friend of Kodaka's father, and pulled strings so that Kodaka could attend St. Chronica's.

Despite her princess-like arrogance, it's been shown that Sena genuinely cares for the other members of the club. For example, Sena offered to purchase a theme park ticket for Maria so that she would not be left out of the group, which showed a degree of care unexpected from an arrogant princess who thinks nothing of others. Later, while she exacted her revenge on Yozora for plagiarizing, Sena made a point not to go too far and offered Yozora a chance to redeem herself by giving her a part in the movie. Sena also has an overly creepy obsession regarding Kodaka's younger sister, Kobato, going so far as asking to take a bath with her. Sena will go to any lengths to make Kobato happy, much to Kobato's discomfort.

In Volume 7 of the Light Novel,
it was revealed that Kodaka and Sena are fiancés betrothed by their father's which she fully accepts.

In Volume 8,
Sena proposes to Kodaka, asking him to marry her. Sena also confesses to Kodaka that she loves him.

In Volume 9,
Kodaka replies to Sena's confession. He loves her, but due to the circumstances within the club, he is begging her to be patient. As long the club exists, he doesn't want to go out on dates. Sena agrees and the club returns to the old status quo.
