It hurried along wakening streets (эта весть: «это» спешила по пробуждающимся улицам), it was shouted down the frost-stilled ways of quiet villages (ее выкрикивали по успокоенным морозом дорогам тихих сел); men who had read these things from the throbbing tape stood in yellow-lit doorways shouting the news to the passers-by (люди, которые прочли это с телеграфной: «пульсирующей» ленты, стояли в освещенных желтым светом проемах, выкрикивая новость прохожим). “It is nearer (она ближе/приближается).” Pretty women, flushed and glittering, heard the news told jestingly between the dances (красивые женщины, раскрасневшиеся и блистающие, услышали новость, рассказанную в шутку между танцами), and feigned an intelligent interest they did not feel (и сделали вид понимающей заинтересованности, которой они не ощущали). “Nearer (ближе)! Indeed (действительно). How curious (как любопытно)! Lonely tramps faring through the wintry night murmured those words to comfort themselves — looking skyward (одинокие бродяги, странствующие в зимнюю ночь, шептали эти слова, чтобы утешить себя, глядя в небо). “It has need to be nearer (она должна быть ближе), for the night’s as cold as charity (ибо ночь так холодна, как благотворительность). Don’t seem much warmth from it if it IS nearer, all the same (все равно не кажется, что от нее много тепла, если она ДЕЙСТВИТЕЛЬНО ближе = ближе или нет, все равно она совсем не греет).”
“What is a new star to me (что мне новая звезда)?” cried the weeping woman kneeling beside her dead (восклицала плачущая женщина, стоя на коленях возле умершего).

The schoolboy, rising early for his examination work (школьник, встав рано ради экзаменационной работы), puzzled it out for himself (/так/ решил для себя ее; to puzzle out — разобраться; разгадать, найти решение) — with the great white star shining broad and bright through the frost-flowers of his window (огромную белую звезду, светившую широко и ярко сквозь морозные узоры его окна; flower — орнамент, украшение). “Centrifugal, centripetal (центробежная, центростремительная),” he said, with his chin on his fist (говорил он, /подперев/ голову: «подбородок» кулаком). “Stop a planet in its flight (остановите летящую планету: «планету в полете»), rob it of its centrifugal force (отнимите у нее центробежную силу), what then (и что тогда)? Centripetal has it (у нее останется центростремительная /сила/), and down it falls into the sun (и она упадет на солнце)! And this (а это) — !
“Do WE come in the way? I wonder (интересно, /а не/ окажемся ли МЫ /у нее/ на пути) — ”
