Young Maria is unable to participate in PE that day as a result of “forgetting” her gym clothes at home. Yes, an honest mistake, and it happens on occasion. The gym coach gives her a gentle warning, her grade is effected a little bit, but no harm, no foul. The next day, the exact same thing happens again. The warning is not quite as gentle, Maria receives a zero for the day, and is handed a broom to sweep the gym floor while the other girls get their exercise in. But on the third day in a row without gym clothes, it is time to teach her a lesson and help her remember her gym clothes in the future. Maria is sent to the locker room to wait, while he gets the rest of the girls started on a gym activity for the hour. Being sent to the privacy of the locker room can only mean one thing, and it is clear by the look on her face that she knows what is coming. Everyone has seen the paddle that hangs on the wall in his little office off of the gym, but it seems much larger when he walks into the locker room carrying it. There is a brief discussion on the State requiring a certain amount of physical activity a day for each student, and then Maria is simply told to bend over and present her bottom for her paddling. Knowing that he gave Maria every opportunity to remedy the problem, that went from no consequences, to gentle consequences, it is time to teach her the lesson she has fully earned. He is not quick to use the paddle for every little thing, but when it comes out, he uses it to its full potential. One paddle swat is always enough to get any young lady’s attention, but long term learning is not achieved with a single paddle swat . He knows that the more swats he gives Maria, the better she will remember in the future to always dress for gym. He is confident that when the paddling is complete that Maria will indeed have her gym clothes the next day. He knows that by bruising her bottom with the heavy school paddle that a couple of things will be accomplished. The primary goal is for it to hurt for her to sit for a few days . This will assure that there is not a moment, when her bottom touches anything at all, in which she does not remember exactly what behavior led to that soreness. Even better is the warning this will send to the other girls about dressing for gym. He knows that word of a paddling spreads fast, and when Maria is changing in the locker room tomorrow, many girls will sneak a peek at her bottom. The freshly bruised bottom will serve as a very real reminder for all of the girls.

When I was in Jr High (in my 30's now, and straight btw) I was whipped by my gym teacher almost a dozen times.
My first experience was when I was on the basketball court and I was throwing this metal bolt into the glass backing of the basketball goal. My gym teacher caught me and a friend and made us go back into his office for punishment.
He said "Either detention or the paddle". My friend chose detention and I chose the paddle. He made me take down my shorts, but I still had my boxers on. He gave me a good hit after hit. Probably 5 times. I noticed I started getting a semi-erection for some strange reason and when it was over and I was putting on my shorts, my dick made an appearance out the front hole. Plain view of my gym teacher.
For some reason this excited me and I was determined to have it happen again. My lunch break was directly after gym so I took my time getting dressed after gym and was the last one in the locker. I had a permanent marker and started tagging the bench I was sitting on.
The gym teacher walked in and saw me, scolded me and said "stay there". He came back with the paddle. He told me to drop the shorts, but this time I dropped them all the way, underwear and all, and bent over.
There was silence and I thought he was going to tell me to leave so I went to pull my underwear back on and just as my hand went down he laid the paddle down so fast and hard I thought my ass was going to bleed. Very painful. I sat there with my hands on my ass and he said "get dressed" and left.
That kept me from wanting to do it again... until a few weeks later I was being bullied and stood up for myself. Got into a fight with a few other boys. We got pulled into the office. "Paddle or Detention" (and possible suspension).
There were 4 of us and we all chose the paddle. The gym teacher pointed and me and said "you're first". I walked up to his desk, pulled my pants and underwear down... full view of the other kids behind me, mind you, and took it like a man. He hit HARD too... This gave me an erection like you wouldn't believe. Turned around and pulled up. Boner in full view. Wasn't picked on after that, lol. Who knows what they thought.
This went on for a while. I had a feeling my gym teacher liked dishing it as much as I liked receiving it. I felt guilty about it, ashamed and felt nervous that I was going to be in more trouble for liking it. I grew out of it eventually... not a part of my life much anymore. Sometimes I have my wife give me a good spanking, but nothing as severe as what I used to get, yet she has no idea. It's so deep in the closet that it was hard to finally type this up.

I had a teacher like this, except he used a gym shoe. When he was in the mood for it he'd pick out some kid on the slightest excuse and slipper him in front of the class. For years after I would have punched the sadistic bastard if I'd met him on the street. When corporal punishment was abolished he could not maintain discipline in class as kids had no respect for him.
If the only way he could maintain discipline was through fear of physical pain, then I'd say he was a pretty shitty teacher.
Considering the fact that the dude not only owned a paddle, but brought it to work and constantly tried to find reasons to use it, I'd say yes, he did enjoy dishing it out.
That was a very common thing back then. By OP's post, I'd estimate it happened in the early 90s and he even said it was a small town in the south. Paddling as punishment wasn't out of the ordinary.
What school did you go to where the paddle is even still an option? You're only 30, I thought they stopped doing that type of thing ages ago.
I'm 34 and I live in Indiana. There are still some schools here that allow it.
When I graduated (2002) in Oklahoma, you could choose between swats and detention. We had a new principal the last couple of years who wouldn't allow girls to choose swats.
