My father had always prepared me for it, to be fair.
“All the cadets together, willies dangling like this,” , he would say, gesturing with his hand to dispel any doubt remaining in my mind,
“..taking a shower in a hurry. Be ready for that, boy.”
This would be said whenever my desire to join the National Defence Academy to become a fighter pilot would come up.
It sounded a bit jarring, what with me being straight and all, but I guess I mentally started preparing several years in advance.
In 1990, I joined the Lawrence School Sanawar, a co-educational boarding school, and perhaps the world’s oldest co-ed boarding school.
I was fifteen, and it was when I left home.
“Send him to Sanawar to make a man of him”
said the letters painted in giant red in the Gym hall.
I’d guess seventy percent of Sanawarians at that time were children of Punjabi parents, half of them Sikh,
so there was a lot of testosterone going around in that bathhouse when the boys of Nilgiri house converged to communally bathe twice a week.
Our bathhouse had an ancient wood-fired boiler, and there used to be a worried-looking Boilerman stoking the fires twice a week as a chorus of screams rang out whenever the water temperature dipped:
“BOILERMANNNNNNNN!!” Followed by several expletives too strong for this piece.
Inside, it was all water, steam and bodies. Time was limited, and you didn’t want the water to stop before the soap was washed off.
Also, there were far too few shower stalls.
Not everyone was always naked; a friend took all of a year to lose the chaddi, and undoubtedly there have been more like him.
Things rarely got awkward, unless your shower-mate kept asking you to touch his pecs to see how much progress he had made.
The juniors, in class eight and nine, always begging for a few seconds in the shower-
“Please let me wash the soap from my eyes! It burns!”
There were a few fights, too- the passageway to the bathhouse from the dorms was a perfect spot for ambush where a group of boys could waylay a lone towel-clad adversary for a session of intimidation.
But not inside the bathhouse. Strangely, a group of people asexually gathered together naked seems to lower the barriers of the mind. Clothing-optional beaches, where I was to find myself later in life, reinforced this insight.
Also interestingly, our ideas of how the bathing happened in the Girl’s Department were laid to rest the day we heard from a reliable source that everyone there had their own curtained cubicles and that was that.
It was a nice idea while it lasted, though.

Interested in sharing stories about guys' experience with gang / communal showers -- either growing up, at summer camps, at the residential halls in college, in the military, in the frat house, etc. Also interested in mixing it up with information about the underwear scene, comfort with nudity thing, etc.

Here's three from me:

1. Played baseball through college and, of course, there were always gang showers for the athletes in both high school and college. In high school, six poles with four shower heads on each, and in college, eight poles with four shower heads on each. Went to college in the mid-1990s in the South, and so most dudes were still wearing white or colored briefs. Most dudes on the baseball team wore FTLs (blue and gold tracers) or Hanes (with the grey/grey/grey tracers), though you did see some Staffords, BVDs, and Jockeys too.

2. Freshman dorm where I lived also had communal showers, set up as four shower heads around the perimeter of a wall. There was a small changing room outside of it. Most dudes at the start of the year would walk to the showers in their briefs, or with a towel wrapped around their waist, then then hang up one or both items on a hook in the changing room before stepping into the shower area with their shower basket. About half the dudes would bring a fresh pair of underwear to step into after toweling off, and the other half would towel off and then walk back (typically with towel wrapped around waist) to their room. As the year progressed, and dudes relaxed, there was more walking to the showers in tighty whities or naked (with towel in hand or over shoulder).

3. Sophomore year I moved into my fraternity's house, which had four shower poles with four shower heads on each pole to service 64 dudes. Nudity and tighty whities were rampant in the house and, of course, the shower areas were sometimes disgusting. Tighty whities were the norm, though a few guys had a few pairs of boxer shorts. Boxer briefs were not on the scene yet.
Went to college gyms - had a sauna in the middle of two shower rooms. Good times. Would often wear briefs or towel and get hand jobs in the sauna area
I was so shy through high school and college that I was able to avoid all communal shower situations. Our high school had communal showers for after gym class, but our PE teacher didn’t enforce showers, so almost nobody took them.

I started to use, and enjoy, communal showers around 30 years old. I joined a gym and they had communal showers. My gym has the pole style and some on the wall.
Never had group showers until I joined the military and went to basic training. I went through Lackland in 2011 in the old dorms. The shower room had 8 shower heads, 4 on one wall and then 4 on the wall across from it. I was nervous about the idea at first but quickly realized showering in that environment was very stressful, and that set the nerves aside. Nobody wanted to take group showers but when you’re getting screamed at you don’t have a lot of time to think. Also, since there were 60 of us in my flight and only 8 heads, it was common practice to have 2 or 3 people per shower head. Never got to look around or enjoy the views because we were rushed through the entire process.

After basic I started going to the gym on base and using the locker room every time I went. It was a mix of retirees and young military guys. There were 2 giant shower rooms but they were hardly ever used. I was always the only person showering when I was there.
My first experience with communal showers (and changing in front of strangers) was in 7th grade for PE. And to make matters worse, I was a shy kid, so dropping my pants in a congested locker room and walking naked to take a mandatory shower (about 4-5 heads per wall, no curtains or anything) was traumatizing. And no towels were issued until after you showered, so you had to undress, walk naked down the aisle, take a shower, walk naked to the towel window, and only then could you wrap yourself in a towel, which was the size of a handkerchief. It only covered so much. Only then could you walk back safely to your locker, where you had to drop the towel and dress. Hated the whole process

But by 9th grade we were used to it, so it wasn't as scarring. But that first year in junior high...ooof!

I just joined a new gym recently. It's a small strip mall street front facility and pretty cheap...$13 a month. Has everything I need. However it is the first gym I have belonged to that has a "gang shower". Maybe that's why most of the guys I have seen coming and going do so in their workout clothes. Most of the guys in the locker room do not freeball. Most do not take showers. I have only seen a few shower or freeball. Won't stop me however...freeballing or using the showers.
This subject is also discussed in a link I posted under the heading PE Kit about three weeks ago!
He Peter....looked for the PE Kit..found it posted seven months ago...interesting reading.

Ross NZ, good to hear that short shorts are coming back in fashion in your country, I hope other countries will soon adopt the short shorts fashion again.
