Is it a perfect life or a perfect lie?
Apple TV+ has revealed the first look at Loki star Gugu Mbatha-Raw 's new thriller series Surface as a new trailer has officially been released.
The psychological thriller stars Mbatha-Raw as a woman named Sophie and the series follows her as she attempts to piece her life together after an alleged suicide attempt in San Francisco Bay.
After suffering a traumatic head injury, Sophie has no memory of the days leading up to the accident and tries to figure out why she threw herself over the side of a boat and into the ocean.
In the trailer, which you can see above, we see Sophie working with a therapist to try and discover the missing pieces of her puzzle in a quest for the truth, drawing on the support of her husband, played by The Haunting of Hill House star Oliver Jackson-Cohen, and friends too.
Before long, however, Sophie begins to question whether or not the truth she's being told is the truth that she actually lived, and the chilling footage sees her question reality as flashes of her memories return.
"Everyone keeps telling me who I think I am, but if my life was so perfect why did I try to end it?" she questions at one point in the trailer before she begins to wonder whether the people closest to her had sinister intentions.
"Through twists and turns and an unexpected love triangle, this sexy, elevated thriller asks: What if you woke up one day and didn’t know your own secrets?" the synopsis teases.
" Surface is a story of self- discovery which contemplates if we are pre-programmed to become who we are, or if we choose our own identity."
The series also stars Stephan James, Ari Graynor, Academy Award-nominee Marianne Jean-Baptiste, François Arnaud and Millie Brady.
Surface has been created by High Fidelity 's Veronica West, who also serves as an executive producer alongside Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter. Sam Miller, the Emmy-nominated director of I May Destroy You , has directed four episodes of the new series, including the pilot which is set to premiere on Apple TV+ on July 29.
The first three episodes of Surface will be available to stream on Apple TV+ on July 29. The following five episodes will be released weekly.
