xAI, the AI company founded by Elon Musk, announced that its latest and most powerful model, the Grok 4, is available for free to all users worldwide.

In the ‘Auto’ mode in Grok, only complex queries are routed to Grok 4, whereas the ‘Expert’ mode directs all queries to Grok 4.

Musk, in a post on X, stated that this free tier allows a limited number of queries per day, with anything beyond that requiring a subscription to the platform.

The $30 monthly plan allows full access to Grok 4’s capabilities, whereas the $300 per month plan offers access to Grok 4 Heavy, the higher-performance variant.

Besides, Grok 4 is also available on Perplexity Pro, which was made available for free for 12 months across all Airtel network users in India.

The model, announced last month, ranks among the top-performing AI models today, alongside OpenAI’s recently announced GPT-5 and Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro.

However, the ARC-AGI benchmark, which assesses models on tasks that humans perform effortlessly but are challenging for AI, Grok 4 outperforms GPT-5.

Many users have also reported that Grok 4 performs better than GPT-5. One user on X called the competition “not even close” and said, “Grok 4 Auto mode works extremely well, it answered this simple math question in approximately one second without needing to switch models.”

Meanwhile, Musk has also said that Grok 5, the next generation, will be out before the end of the year and will be “crushingly” good.

In a recent chess tournament organised by Kaggle for AI models, Grok 4 reached the finals but was defeated by OpenAI’s o3 reasoning model.

“Up until the semifinals, it seemed like nothing would be able to stop Grok 4 on its way to winning the event,” Chess.com said in an analysis of the game.
