GRINGO, a dark comedy mixed with white-knuckle action and dramatic intrigue, explores the battle of survival for businessman Harold Soyinka (David Oyelowo) when he finds himself crossing the line from law-abiding citizen to wanted criminal.
An exhilarating mix of dark comedy, white-knuckle action and dramatic intrigue, Gringo joyrides into Mexico, where mild-mannered businessman Harold Soyinka (David Oyelowo) finds himself at the mercy of his back-stabbing business colleagues back home, local drug lords and a morally conflicted black-ops mercenary. Crossing the line from law-abiding citizen to wanted criminal, Harold battles to survive his increasingly dangerous situation in ways that raise the question: Is he out of his depth - or two steps ahead?
Gringo (2 out of 5 stars).

Gringo is a crime comedy film that had potential in being funny and entertaining. However, it tries too much on what it was trying to be. The plot is overstuffed; the tone was all over the place from stupid humor to serious crime film. The direction was not sure on what it was trying to be as a movie.

The plot follows Harold (David Oyelowo) an every day honest businessman, who keeps feeling like his pharmaceutical company may be going downhill. While his boss Richard (Joel Edgerton) reassures him that everything is fine. That he should not worry about a thing. While Richard and Elaine (Charlize Theron) and Harold make a business trip to Mexico to cut off the supply to one of there clients. Harold gets abducted and held for ransom by the cartel. Meanwhile, Richard brings in his mercenary brother Mitch (Sharlto Copley) to help bring Harold back home.

The plot was all over the place. Harold is a character that is clueless about everything. He believes the company is in great hands. He believes he is in a happy marriage with his wife played by (Thandie Newton). He is easily tricked by his boss. Which is an easy cliché as the biggest jerk of a character. Who tries to cheat people and uses excuses to get out of everything. Harold realizes the company is trying to cheat him through. He fakes his abduction with two hotel employees to make an abduction phone call so the company can pay for the ransom. Surely, things really do not go as plan. Then, there is a sub plot of two employees that work at a guitar store played by Amanda Seyfriend and Harry Treadaway. Which he wants to go to Mexico for a drug deal. While she thinks it's a mini getaway. Plus there is a few twists and turns with the characters. And predictable at that.

The film has a big cast but everyone's performance is quite dull. No one seems like they are interested in being in the film. David Oyelowo seems to be enjoying his role as a clueless character which you feel sympathy for. While everyone is playing the typical cliché character like Charlize Theron, Joel Edgerton, Amanda Seyfried, Thandie Newton, and Sharlto Copley.

The film is quite boring. The humor is feeling dull in the movie. It is suppose to be funny. But it is executed poorly in trying to deliver for laughs.

Overall, Gringo is a bad film. The plot is messy with its overstuffed premise and sub plots. The direction is all over the place from trying to be a comedy film and being serious. The performances are tedious.

I do not recommend the film.
Movies like this are supposed to be focused on the circumstances, a one-off, nothing deep, and this was well achieved with Gringo. I laughed at some appropriate moments, nothing felt unbelievable, and the lead was likeable. Basic stuff, but basic stuff not done poorly.

Worth the time.
A fun romp with a great comic performance from Oyelowo. Doesn’t linger, but you’ll enjoy it while it lasts.
