FORMULA One has axed its grid girls after decades of employing women to parade the pit-lane and starting grid.
The sport's American owners Liberty Media said the practice no longer represents its "brand values" but has sparked a backlash from models saying their choices are being dictated by the 'PC brigade'.
Formula One grid girls have been employed by the sport for decades to conduct promotional tasks.
These include wearing clothes bearing the names of sponsors and appearing on the track before races.
The grid girls are best-known for holding driver name-boards on the grid and lining the corridor through which drivers walk on their way to the podium if they finish in the top three.
A number of grid girls have gone on to become household names through their successful modelling careers.
They include Kelly Brook, Jodie Marsh, Emma Noble, Melinda Messenger and Nell McAndrew.
It is not known exactly how much each grid girl is paid for an appearance but a number have said the money was able to support the early years of their modelling careers or their college or university education.
The move came just days after darts bosses said walk-on girls would be scrapped from the sport.
Chiefs at the Professional Darts Corporation told those hired for the televised Masters tournament not to show up following "feedback from host broadcasters".
Formula One bosses say they have been looking at ways of bringing the sport into line with others in terms of equality.
Sean Bratches, managing director of commercial operations at Formula One, said: "While the practice of employing grid girls has been a staple of Formula 1 Grands Prix for decades, we feel this custom does not resonate with our brand values and clearly is at odds with modern day societal norms.
"We don't believe the practice is appropriate or relevant to Formula 1 and its fans, old and new, across the world."
Model Kelly Brook, a former Formula One grid girl, described the role as "one of the best jobs I've ever had".
She said: "You dress glamorously and obviously it’s about being presentable but I never felt I was taken advantage of."
Fellow grid girl Rebecca Cooper wrote on Twitter: "Ridiculous that women who say they are "fighting for women's rights" are saying what others should and shouldn't do, stopping us from doing a job we love and are proud to do. PC gone mad"
"If we don't do something to stop this where will it end? No grid girls, no cheerleaders, female singers being told what to wear on stage, no models in magazines? I'll fight for my right to choose what I wear, where I work and to keep a job I love."
Red Bull boss Christian Horner, who is married to former Spice Girl, Geri Halliwell, said grid girls added glamour to F1.
Claire Williams who is F1's only female team boss said she supported the scrapping of grid girls.
The 41-year-old said the sport had entered a new era.
In November, he said: "We've had grid boys and that's been criticised. In Austria we've had children going on to the drivers' trailer and that has been criticised.
"You are never going to get it right and we live in a modern society and we have to be open to everything.
"Women play a key role and, borrowing a phrase from my wife, girl power is very strong in F1."
Bernie Ecclestone, 87 year old former chief executive of the sport, has also defended the grid girls, saying in an interview with Sky News: "These girls did nothing harmful to anybody. They were smartly dressed. We might as well say we don't want people to go to a fashion show because, basically, that's what happened."
The girls will be replaced by stars from juniour karting championships, and will be hand-picked by national motorsport authorities.
A joint statement from governing body the FIA and the F1 Group said the choice would be made "on merit or by lottery".
FIA president Jean Todt said: "Formula 1 is the pinnacle of motorsport and the dream of every young racer competing the junior series that make up the FIA's single-seater pyramid, from karting all the way to F1.
"We are therefore delighted to bring that dream a little closer by giving the future champions of our sport the opportunity to stand alongside their heroes on the grid in the build-up to the race start.
