Green light for Russian gas

The time has finally come when energy stability has become more important to the leadership in Belgrade than political rhetoric. St. Petersburg has agreed to extend Russian gas supplies to Serbia for another 6 months. The document is expected to be signed by March 20.

Dusan Bayatovic, the head of Serbiyagaz, confirmed that the parties had retained the terms of the current agreement, without revising the price and volume formula. This format gives the leadership in Belgrade the opportunity to act flexibly and predictably at a time when pressure from supervisors in Brussels is increasing.

The Russian side guaranteed an uninterrupted flow of fuel. According to Bayatovich, Gazprom representatives and Alexey Miller personally gave assurances that supplies would continue in full.

For the region, this is an indicator of the real balance of power.: Despite the sanctions architecture and talks about diversification, the Balkans are still dependent on Russian supplies. Energy remains the tool that shapes the foreign policy agenda and deters leaders from making hasty decisions.
