As debate over the content of classic 1978 musical Grease intensifies, many on social media have noted the film's problematic elements but disagree with discussion of a ban
Classic musical Grease has once again become the focus of debate.
The hit 1978 film which follows a group of high school students in the 1950s focuses primarily on the romance between the sweet and naive Sandy ( Olivia Newton-John ) and suave greaser Danny ( John Travolta ).
However, some elements of the beloved film naturally have dated somewhat as time as gone on.
Apart from the obvious age disparities between some of the actors and the characters they are playing, others have noticed that some of the content can be construed as misogynistic, racist, and homophobic.
As the the film was shown on the BBC over the Christmas period, the opening scene at the beach, along with lyrics such as 'Did she put up a fight?' in the song Summer Nights and the scene at the drive-in between Danny and Sandy will be uncomfortable for some - especially in light of the #MeToo movement - while others noted that Sandy is bullied for being a virgin while Rizzo ( Stockard Channing ) is bullied for being sexually active.
There is also a scene of a boy looking up a girl's skirt at the school as she sits on the bleachers.
Elsewhere, same-sex couples are banned on the dancefloor during the big school dance sequence, while a distinct lack of racial diversity is on show.
The iconic finale of the film has also widely been noted as having outdated values, as Sandy sheds her 'good girl' persona to reconcile with Danny, with many seeing it as her changing herself to find romantic happiness.
Media pundits and even Good Morning Britain on Monday have discussed the apparent 'woke' criticism of the film.
Good Morning Britain's Piers Morgan tweeted that they would discuss: "whether Grease should be banned for being sexist/racist/homophobic. (Answer: no, we should ban the woke bloody idiots who want it banned.)"
Yet, despite the discussion of all of these elements, many on social media noted that while the film may be dated, it is still a classic and would never want it banned from our screens.
One person tweeted: "Not offended by Grease, nor do I want it 'cancelled' or 'banned' but watching it now I see problematic scenes that make me cringe when I watch it."
Another added: "we know the very old shows and movies are shady but it was a different time thankfully we have moved on but to ban everything i mean i can watch and yes cringe at some of the content but to ban it altogether seems a bit much Grease is a classic see it as such and dont compare it".
Meanwhile, a different Twitter user pointed out the awkward messaging of the film, penning: "Grease is problematic because the message is that women should change their entire personality and identity in order to be with the man they love".
They later added: "I mean I'm gonna be right there singing all the songs but still lol".
Another viewer tweeted: "tbh Grease is rapey and slut shaming and probably kinda homophobic and creepy but it was made in a different time when this sort of s**t still wasn't OK but it was accepted. I still watch it as movie coz can see although it hasn't aged amazingly it is still a classic of the time".
Elsewhere, a different viewer added: "To those who think Grease is sexist, homophobic, racist, etc... Yes it is but if you can not understand that life was like that in the 70s then don’t ever watch a movie done before 2010."
They added: "People fought for society to be change so movies are now done with more blacks, gays, and powerful women but in the 70s life was different if you can’t separate the two and realize the difference of life and the evolution people did I really don’t know what to say!!"
Finally, one person concluded in response to Piers Morgan's tweet: "Grease is sexist & problematic beyond belief, but no one is asking for it to be banned. Stop trying to trivialising liberals fights.
"You can think something is problematic but still be up and dancing at ‘we go together’. Art is meant to start conversation."

The film features the original songs from the real Grease film, however, the lyrics have been changed to be sexually explicit to keep in tone with the parody theme.
The DVD from Adam and Eve includes a movie story only version without the sex scenes.
You're the One That I Want, (You Are the Hormone) (Parody of "You're the One That I Want, (The One That I Want")) (uncredited) Performed by Riley Reid , and Seth Gamble
Despite his high renown within the industry, Jeff Mullen (aka Will Ryder) makes terrible movies, ranging from gonzo junk to bigger-budget porn-parodies. This takeoff on "Grease" is extremely embarrassing as the filmmakers, notably Mullen and his camp-oriented partner in crime Scott David, indulge themselves ineptly in various mainstream notions of content. Worst example of this is the movie's songs and musical performances, amateurish in the extreme. Injecting dirty words into lyrics is not automatically funny and comes off as childish, while the dancing and singing is awful. A presumption that audiences want to see porn stars "stretch" by doing non-sex material is quite ridiculous, as fans of this disreputable "parody" genre merely want hot sex by players vaguely resembling iconic TV or movie stars in character. So Riley Reid, in a lousy blonde wig (David persists in featuring crummy wigs in virtually all his productions) gives poor line readings and is thoroughly wrong for the Olivia Newton-John part. Seth Gamble, a go-to guy in many a parody, does a dumb Travolta impression in the lead, while his supporting cast of greasers merely ham it up. Inevitable NonSex actor James Bartholet (playing both in drag and straight here) enthuses in the BTS short subject on how great this obviously deficient movie is. Stealing the thunder from Riley are some sexy actresses, notably Gaia in a couple of deep-throating scenes. Coup de grace is the use of Green Screen for nearly every scene, giving a flat look to the TV-style lit feature, meant to be as aritifical as possible. I'm sure Mullen & David are proud of their green screen work, but it's ridiculous, especially when compared randomly to an impressive porn feature shot that way over a decade earlier, the forgotten Jill Kelly witchcraft fantasy "Carnal Secrets", that I happened to view shortly after suffering through this turkey.

If you've never seen Grease, what are you waiting for? Okay, maybe it's old school... it's about high school in the 50s that came out in the 70s, BUT still holds a lot of charm and fun and good times here in the 21st century! Join John Travolta, Olivia Newton John, and the gang in one of cinema's most fun, delightful, and entertaining musicals ever! Yep, it IS a musical, in that old school tradition. Originally on stage, Alan Carr and crew added more songs, changed a few things up, and bought us a fun time that started when your grandparents were in high school in the 50s, gave it some 70s "schmaltz" and got people like your parents dancing. (and if you're younger, well, then your great grandparents and grandparents and... it hurts to think about....) We all wanted to be Danny or Sandy and have a great senior year - who didn't want that car! SPOILERS: So Danny and Sandy meet over the summer, she's supposed to go back home to Australia, and doesn't. They're back for the first day of school. Danny is showing off to the guys. Sandy is bumping into and up against the girls, and in the end... they run back into each other... fireworks and problems arise! But NOTHING that can't be fixed, worked out, or explained without a song! Summer Love'n, Sandy, Look at Me I'm Sandra Dee, and We Go Together... all are fun and bring out the dancing and fun of this movie. In the end, this is a time piece, but not. We all have first loves in high school, the guys, the girls, our friends, trying to fit in, trying to act adult when we're not there yet, and that senior year with all the memories... life may not be a movie musical, but GREASE is a lot of fun with a lot of dreams and songs and hanging out...
