Gravity Falls is an animated Disney show that first aired in 2012, and, despite it coming out almost a decade ago, it still has a ton of active fans. As someone who got into the fandom VERY late (cough, last month, cough), I had plenty of inspiration when I started creating my own Gravity Falls cosplays. As a result of that, and my years of cosplaying experience, I was able to throw together cosplays of the two main characters very quickly. And, in this tutorial, I’m going to show you how I did it, along with (hopefully) proving some tips and tricks to help you create your own Gravity Falls cosplays! So, without further ado, let’s get started with this Gravity Falls cosplay tutorial!
The first cosplay from Gravity Falls I created was one of the main characters, Mable Pines. She was a great choice for me because her design looked pretty easy to put together, and she had braces, like I did! So, for the first time in a while, I could smile with my teeth in photos, while still looking ‘realistic’ and ‘in-character.’
So, for this Gravity Falls cosplay tutorial, let’s start with her!
There are several different components for this cosplay: A pink turtleneck sweater with a star, a short purple skirt, black shoes, white socks, and a pink headband. Pretty simple, pretty easy.
Let’s start out with the sweater. I used an over-large, bright pink sweater I got at the thrift store as a base. Not a turtleneck, sadly, but you can’t get everything perfect when thrifting cosplay. I also bought some white felt to create the star. Next, I used Sharpies to draw on the star shape, cut it out, and then hand-stitched it to the sweater front using pink embroidery floss. I love the handmade look this gave it, as Mable canonically makes many of her own sweaters! This was a pretty easy part of the cosplay.
Next was the skirt. I thrifted a purple skirt for this, but it was far too long. To fix this, I trimmed about six inches off the bottom, and hemmed it again with my sewing machine. Of course, if you manage to find a skirt that is the correct length already, you don’t have to worry about this step.
For the shoes, I used a pair of black sparkly ones with white soles, as I already owned them, and they fit the cosplay pretty well. The white socks were just… white socks. I know, I know, this is a cosplay tutorial, but I just don’t know how much more… in-depth I can get for that.
Next up was the wig and all it’s accessories. I bought a wavy brown wig with bangs from Amazon for like twelve dollars, and only had to do a bit of styling to get it to look right. The pink headband came in a pack of like 5 from Dollar Tree, and I added several colorful barrettes to give the whole look more character.
The makeup was pretty simple: A plain face of makeup, with lots of blush, some eyeliner to give more attention to my eyes, and pinkish eyeshadow for a more cutesy look. Nothing too complex.
And then the cosplay was done! See how easy this was? It took me like a week to put it all together, but that was only because I kept putting it off. In all honesty, you could probably pull it off in an afternoon. Seriously, it’s that easy. And the next one is even easier.
Dipper Pines is the other main character from Gravity Falls, and I wasn’t originally going to cosplay him. However, a blue vest at a thrift store caught my attention, and I thought ‘Why not?’ So I then proceeded to thrift everything else that would be needed to make a gender-bent cosplay for him. And since this is a Gravity Falls cosplay tutorial, why not show how to create both of the main characters?
Dipper’s look is even more simple than Mable’s: A short-sleeved orange shirt, navy blue vest, grayish shorts, a blue hat with a pine tree on it, and black shoes and white socks. Super easy.
Most of his look I was able to thrift. The vest I found came with a detachable hood, and once I took that off, it was perfect. The beige shorts I bought weren’t exactly the right color, but, again, you can’t get it all perfect when thrifting. And, honestly, it doesn’t make that much of a difference. The orange shirt was like a dollar at the same thrift store. The shoes and socks were the same ones I used for my Mable cosplay. Because why go out and buy more when I already had some?
See how easy this is so far? And we’re almost done! The final bit was the hat. Now, I could have just bought it, but I like to make at least some aspect of every cosplay, so I decided to use what I had on hand.
For a base, I used a blue baseball cap I’d gotten a long time ago, and covered the front of it with duct tape to make a pattern. I then took off the tape, cut it so it would lie flat, then traced it onto white craft foam from Walmart. I used some contact cement to connect the pieces of white together, and then hot glue to glue it to the first of the hat. Using the same foam as before, I cut out a pine tree shape, and glued it to the front of the hat as well. Then all that was left was to paint the tree the same blue color as the hat, and it was done!
It ended up being way easier than I thought it was going to be, and it saved me twenty bucks in buying a pre-made one online. Though, of course, you can absolutely go that route if you choose!
Finally, there was the wig and makeup. I used the same brown wig with bangs for Dipper as I did for Mable, because it worked for the character, and I didn’t want to buy another one. I just had to style it a bit differently (and increase the band size of the hat to fit over it, since wigs make your head just a tad bigger). For the makeup, I did a look similar to Mable’s, just a simple face of makeup, but with more defined eyeliner, and some blush on my nose as well, to make it look a bit pinker. It’s a pretty simple look, overall, but I love how it turned out.
Now, for the photoshoots for both of these cosplays, I wanted some kind of prop. And the obvious solution was Journal #3, as it plays a prominent role throughout the show. I could have bought one online like a normal person, but… I’m a cosplayer! Of COURSE I had to make it completely from scratch.
The entire process for making the journal is kinda complex, with a lot of steps. But I did my best to document it through video format. I’ll do my best to sum it up here, but you can watch the full tutorial on my Youtube channel.
First, I used cardboard to form the base, covering it with 2mm EVA foam to make the cover. I then used more foam to glue details on top, and thicker foam to make fake pages along the sides, and then primed and painted it. I glued fake pages to the inside to cover up the construction work, made some actual pages using paper, pens, and more paint, and then glued those to the inside of the book. Whew! Overall, I’m really happy with how the Journal turned out. It made for a great photoshoot prop! For the photoshoots, I went to two different nearby parks. I also used a tripod and remote trigger, so I could take my own photos. They were later edited with the built-in editor in the Photos app, and the iPad apps Snapseed and Procreate.
And then the cosplays were fully done! These were, without a doubt, some of the easiest cosplays I have ever done. Great for a quick project, a last-minute Halloween or comic con costume, or just for fun!
Gravity Falls is such a great show, even if some parts are bit more… for kids. It still has a great plot, intriguing mysteries, and complex characters, who have cool designs that make you want to draw and cosplay them! I may have done two cosplays from the show already, but I doubt I’ll stop there… I’ve got my eye on a certain magic Dorito.

We cannot deny that Disney Channel series, in general, have a special place in our hearts. But the quirky animation, engaging storyline filled with mysteries, and interesting characters of this show is something else. With that, here is a list of the best Gravity Falls cosplay!
First on our list is stunning cosplay that was shot by M-Rainey . Here you can see how Dipper would look like as an adult. The photographer revealed in the comments of her post that she took the photo at some forest in Russia. How cool!
Next on our list is the cosplay by Жopa . Shot by EnvytheOne, the photo features the character’s youthful charisma and accurate outfit. And look, you can also spot the iconic Journal 3!
If you want to see Dipper and Mabel together, take a look at this photo posted by Babi Sparrow . The props, outfits, and facial expressions are spot-on!
Next on our list is this look by AlyGainsboroughx , which you can find on Reddit. With the adorable Waddles plush and forest background, this cosplay is lovely!
Kagato Cosplay did a superb job in dressing up as Grunkle Stan. Complete with the props and exaggerated pout, this look is perfect!
Next on our list is another accurate cosplay by Mad Doctor Mike . It is good to see Grunkle stan having fun in this photo.
In this cosplay by Simbakun , we can see the cranky Grunkle Stan with a wide smile plastered on his face.
As you can see, Lord Alexandre absolutely mirrors Soos in this photo, especially with the “peace sign” and visible buck teeth.
Another spot-on Soos cosplay worth sharing is this one by Tenori Tiger . And the fact that Wendy is also included in the photo makes everything a hundred times better.
Speaking of Wendy Corduroy, here is a flawless cosplay by Ivy Hale , where the artist incorporated Wendy’s tomboyish and laid-back personality. Needless to say, the props and wardrobe are accurate.
Still on the Wendy cosplays, let us admire this look by Ersaniel . She did an excellent job with her accurate make-up and wardrobe.
Let us move on to the cosplays of Bill Cipher. In this striking look by A-kirra’s , the artist took Bill’s human form to another level with the accurate outfit and impressive photo editing.
Next, we also have Evil Dietrich’s cosplay that screams danger. Everything about the get-up is flawless.
For the last Bill cosplay, here Alex Laventius’s take on the character is his triangular form.
Marv did a fantastic Ford Pines portrayal, where he also included the journal.
This version by Jason Mahn is on a different level. His attention to detail is a plus because he didn’t forget Ford’s six fingers.
Erika’s portrayal of Ford Pines also deserves a spot on our list. It was a wise decision to add Bill to the photos.
We are going to end the list with a Pacifica Elise Northwest cosplay. Molza rocked the spoiled persona of the character. Also, who knew an all-violet outfit would look this great?
