Turn on one of these LGBTQ+ flicks to see yourself onscreen.
Even though the LGBTQ+ population is on the rise in the United States, lesbian and gay relationships are still underrepresented in much of popular media. But the good news is, a more diverse array of human experiences is appearing on screen just about every year. According to the 2020 GLAAD media report , of the 118 films released from the major studios in 2019, 22 included LGBTQ+ characters. That's the highest percentage of inclusive films in the report's history. And that representation really makes a difference. Media that shows LGBTQ+ people normalizes love and relationships between two people of the same gender, educates viewers on the long and difficult journey we're still taking toward equal rights and reinforces the fact that that gay, lesbian and LGBTQ+ people are just that, people who deserve to live loud and proud.
For newly out or young viewers, that validation is especially important as it can make them feel seen and heard in their experiences. That's a powerful thing, especially for those who don't otherwise have a safe place to be who they are. No matter your favorite genre, one of these movies focused on lesbian characters will be the perfect choice for your viewing pleasure. Be warned, though: some of them are a little hot and heavy. We've made a note of that where applicable, so you can save them for date night. Whether you want to help your LGBTQ+ teenager feel accepted or need a good film to watch with your partner, you'll find something to love on this list.
A wealthy woman and a department store clerk begin an illicit affair in this must-watch LGBTQ+ film set in the 1950s. Adapted from the cult classic The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith, it depicts how unexpected romance can change your life.
Fans of comedian Tig Notaro will love this tear-jerking documentary about life after a devastating cancer diagnosis. If you also cried your way through her stand-up set where she announced it, show this to a friend.
Many of us first watched this sleeper hit when we were teens ourselves, and it's well worth revisiting. It's poignant, hilarious and endlessly quotable.
Charlotte is a troubled musical prodigy and Elizabeth is a new star student. Before long, they find themselves starting down a dangerous path with sinister results. This LGBTQ+ thriller will send shivers down your spine.
High schooler Adele has barely begun exploring her own identity when she meets blue-haired, free-spirited Emma. Adele's friends don't accept her as she really is, so she grows even closer to Emma. As you may be able to tell from the poster, this one's best for adult audiences.
A comedic spoof on the Charlie Angels franchise, D.E.B.S. centers around the unlikely love story between the leader of an elite group of teen spies and a supervillain. You don't have to be too familiar with the original story to love this fun, flirty romp.
Like so many besties, Naomi and Ely have a firmly established "no kiss list" to protect them from getting romantically entangled. But in a surprising twist, they both come down with the hots for the same dude, even though Ely's a lesbian. Turn rom-com stereotypes upside down with this quirky, fun film.
Starring Ali Shawkat of Arrested Development , this intimate drama redefines what love between two women can look like. After getting fed up with the lies and deception their previous relationships have involved, two women spend 24 hours with each other to see if they can do any better.
Tear your eyes away from the poster image for a second, because the story is just as enticing. It follows the love story of Tala, a London-based Palestinian woman who's planning her wedding when she meets and falls for Leyla, a British Indian woman.
Simone's trying to work up the bravery to come out as a lesbian to her conservative Jewish family when she develops a crush on a dashing male chef. This snort-worthy comedy covers the spectrum of romantic attraction, with lots of heartfelt and funny moments along the way.
Comic book artists Holden and Banky have been buds for more than 20 years, but when they meet Alyssa, it could throw a wrench in their friendship. Holden falls hard, but there's just one problem: Alyssa doesn't date men. This fun comedy also has an excellent throwback soundtrack.
From the minds that brought you There's Something About Mary comes this cringeworthy holiday comedy. A woman brings her girlfriend home for Thanksgiving, intending to come out to the whole clan. But then her male roommate shows up and, well, let's just say it doesn't go as planned.
In 1901, Elisa Sanchez Loriga assumed a male identity to marry her lover, Marcela Gracia Ibeas. This classic movie is based on that riveting story, with beautiful scenery to boot. If you're a fan of foreign films and love stories, this one's perfect for date night
After Nina Shah's father dies, she has to move back to Glasgow to help keep her family's restaurant afloat. That's where she meets Lisa, who owns half. Romance (and lots of tasty-looking food) follows. Grab a snack before pressing play.
Most buddy comedies focus on two straight dudes, so check out this female-fronted flick for a change of pace. Sasha (who's a lesbian) and Paige (who's straight) are best friends, and always put their relationship first. But then Paige meets a new guy that threatens their unbreakable bond.
Buckle in for a dark crime thriller by The Wachowskis that follows Corky, a lesbian ex-con-turned plumber who concocts a plot with Violet to steal millions and pin it on Violet's boyfriend. If you're not in the mood for romance but still want an LGBTQ+ film, try this one.
If you're the type to watch holiday movies year-round (guilty as charged), this star-studded Christmas film works anytime. Our protagonist plans to propose to her girlfriend at Christmas when they spend the holidays with her family, but on their way there, she finds out she isn't out to them. It's heartwarming, funny and the outfits are on point.
After a long estrangement due to her sexual transgressions, Ronit returns home to her super-conservative, Orthodox Jewish community in London and rediscovers a passion for her childhood friend, Esti. It's a stirring exploration of faith, community and love.
Wil is busy with her career as a surgeon and balancing the expectations of her traditionalist Chinese mother, which don't include her dancer girlfriend Vivian. But then her mom shows up with a surprise that calls her bluff. The ending will get your toes tapping, guaranteed.
Gray and Sam are siblings who are so close, people sometimes assume they're actually a couple. They agree to branch out and find each other a mate, but when Sam does, it doesn't exactly go as planned.

Over the past decade, Hollywood has made strides in representation with a number of groundbreaking LGBTQ stories such as Carol, Moonlight and Love, Simon, the latter of which became the first major teen film to centre on a gay protagonist.
But there’s no denying the mainstream film industry has to catch up to the diversity we see in everyday society. The short film medium, however, allows filmmakers and writers the ability to showcase untold – and more accurate – LGBTQ stories.
We’ve rounded up five of the best short lesbian films that you can watch online right now. As is the case with most of our film features, we’ll be updating this list over time – let us know if we’ve left out one of your favourites!

This four-minute short film is set in the early 1900s and centres on a lesbian couple who are torn between their love and society’s perceptions of homosexuality. Do they stay together despite what others will think? Or do they conform to what is expected of them? It’s wonderfully acted – and heartbreaking, at times – and allows us to reflect on how far LGBTQ rights have progressed since.

With over 1.2 million views on YouTube so far, Say You Won’t Let Go has massively resonated with queer viewers because it has two Latina women at the forefront – which is a rarity in this industry. “My little gay heart cannot take this level of cuteness,” said one YouTube user while another opined: “This is so beautiful, and relatable, and just so real.”

Written and edited by Tessa Kennedy, Sunflowers is entirely spoken word and tells the short – but sweet – story of an interracial lesbian couple, Carrie (Rebecca Graham) and Lily (Tessa Kennedy). It’s intensely poetic and beautiful and is a massive breath of fresh air – there’s zero conflict and it’s just all love.

Released earlier this year to acclaim, Unaligned focuses on the romance between a 20-year-old college student and her former caretaker. It’s steamy and heartbreaking at the same time, and somehow manages to tell a well-crafted story within 29 minutes without feeling too crammed. It’s a must-watch.

Directed by Braxie Jacobson, Warmish follows two girls, Parker and Ellie, who reconnect after a year apart and want to take their relationship to the next level – but are unsure how. The short film has racked up over 14 million views on YouTube so far and has been commended by audiences for providing a realistic portrayal of a lesbian romance. Some are even clamouring for a sequel…

When we are watching a film, we pay attention to more than the plot. For us, the most important thing is to admire the gorgeous actresses in the screen. Thus, we have chosen 5 lesbian films featuring beautiful ladies, let’s enjoy their beauty together!
Naama Barash, a rebellious 17-year-old girl, likes to chill and hang out with her friends. One day, a new girl shows up at her school and Naama quickly falls in love with her. She had never experienced this sort of feelings before. Meanwhile, her family keeps bothering her about her attitude, a problem familiar to every teenage girl. However, Barash is set on Israel. Besides queer issues, the film also explores themes of nation, race, and, even, paternity.
The film features many eye-catching sexy scenes, and also portrays teenage culture: fashion, weed, parties, etc., all are present in Barash . The girl playing Naama Barash is Sivan Noam Shimon. She used to have camera shyness but thanks to the director’s help, Shimon owned her role giving an amazing performance!

If you like bad girls, you will probably prefer the actress who plays Naama’s girlfriend. Jade is a very attractive girl with a dark look. She is incredibly charming and also a very outstanding actress. She can always make Sivan (and us) blush in every scene.

Jenny’s Wedding tells the story of a lesbian woman named, well, Jenny. Her parents force her to follow her sister and find a partner after the latter gets married. One day, Jenny finally announces she is engaged. Everyone gets very excited hearing the news but there is a problem: Jenny is about to marry a woman…
This film sees lesbian marriage from the perspective of heterosexual people. When LGBT couples pursue their love and rights, they usually have to face their family’s hesitation. The melodrama is well executed by the director’s masterful planning.
Katherine Heigl in Grey's Anatomy. / Source: Georgia Newsday
If you are a fan of Grey’s Anatomy (2005-present), you probably will be familiar with the main actress featured in this film, Katherine Heigl, who used to play Izzie Stevens in the medical drama. A role that gained her multiple award nominations, including one for best supporting actress at the Emmys.
In a small Dutch village, 16-year-old Anne and her friends spend time biking around town. Those are simple days with not a worry in the world… until a newcomer shows up in town, a mysterious girl, Lena. She is from the city, and her modern style draws Anne’s attention waking up her desire for women. However, in this small town, Anne has to challenge people’s concepts about same-sex love with courage.
This summer, Anne decides to start a new life, and she has no fear.
The gorgeous Ella-June Henrard. / Source: female
The main character is played by the innocent looking Ella-June Henrard, who is a real beauty. She looks like a mix of Dakota Fanning and Amanda Seyfried, with a touch of Jessica Chastain. With shiny hair and sky-blue eyes, Ella can really capture our hearts.
And now an amazing short film, Anita , featuring a rebellious hot girl. The movie starts in a swimming pool in summer. At night, she and her friends have a taste of the adult life: party, drugs and sex are all included.

The girl playing Anita is Paula Muñoz, a Latina hot girl, and she shows her full body in the film without reservations (wink).
But when talking about films with gorgeous ladies, this one takes the prize.
Carol , starring the Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett, tells the story of a forbidden lesbian relationship during the 1950s. The younger girl, Therese is in a stable relationship with her boyfriend and works at a department store. Her true passion, though, is photography. She is insecure towards her future, until one day, she meets Carol, an upper-class lady. Their backgrounds are quite different but there is something between them, a sparkle in their eyes, that makes them get closer. Carol is married and her affair with Therese is later on discovered by her husband, which may cause her losing the guardianship of her daughter. With this unsolvable dilemma between family and love, how does she break through the wall? It is a bittersweet film but one of the most breathtaking lesbian romances of all time.
Cate Blanchett play the nicotine-addict Carol.
Carol not only has a beautiful script, but also features two stunning actresses. Rooney Mara portrays the innocent Therese really well, which make us want to protect and hug her. Cate Blanchett plays the sexy and confident lady, Carol, as an opposite of Rooney Mara’s character.

4. Blue Is The Warmest Colour

There was a considerable amount of controversy following the release of Blue Is The Warmest Colour, with the lead actresses Léa Seydoux and Adèle Exarchopoulos complaining that working with director Abdellatif Kechiche was "horrible" and refusing to work with him again. Regardless of the on-set woes of the cast, the result deserves its many accolades and stands as one of the best recent films exploring the emerging sexuality of a young woman. Exarchopoulos plays Adèle, a teenager who explores her homosexuality with the mysterious blue-haired painter she passes on the street. The lesbian sex scenes certainly helped when it came to promoting the film, but the high standard of acting runs through the rest of the film as well. It's a passionate movie about the fickle nature of love which at three hours long never outstays its welcome.
