While many commemorated the efforts made by the youth to improve South Africa’s education system on June 16, the day brought back painful memories for a KwaZulu-Natal elderly woman who was raped by her grandson last year.
The 60-year-old woman, who lives in a corrugated iron shack held together by wooden logs situated on top of a hill in the Emagelekedeni village of Inanda, just outside Durban, said she lost faith in the youth the day her grandson (17) raped her.
“To tell you the truth, I am afraid of today’s youth. They have no respect for the elderly and they are very lazy. When we were young we used to assist the elderly with their groceries for free, today they ask you to pay them.
“These kids of today want everything to be handed down to them. We always knew our place as the youth, we had respect,” said the woman sitting on her single bed.
Neatly dressed in a long black skirt and a navy blue floral blouse and an olive green hat covering her soft curly hair, the woman told News24 on Wednesday that she was sleeping in her bed when a man slammed the door open and barged in that night.
“It was in the early hours of the morning, around 01:00. The door was locked and I heard a loud bang and saw the door fall into the house.”
Confused and disorientated, the elderly woman rushed for a match stick and quickly lit her candle which was on a table next to her bed.
“I recognised the man to be my grandson and I was shocked to see him in my house so early in the morning. He walked towards me and I screamed for my brother, who lives next door, to come and help me, but no one responded. He climbed on top of me and put his hand over my mouth to prevent me from screaming.”
With tears streaming down her face the elderly woman tried to put up a fight as her grandson strangled her.
“I tried to push him off me but he was too strong. I could feel my high blood pressure going up and all the energy within me just left my body, I was weak. I let him rape me because I couldn’t fight anymore.”
The woman suffering from arthritis said when her grandson was done raping her he stood in front of her and stared at her in silence.
“It was like he lost his mind a little bit. A few minutes after that he ran home,” she said.
That morning she went to tell her neighbour what had happened to her.

He was found guilty of rape and was sentenced to 10 years earlier this year but he got a five year suspended sentence.” She said her grandson was a known whoonga addict in the area. “That’s what he told the court when he appeared earlier this year,” she said.
She said she never thought her grandson would every hurt hear.
“I cried that day because I couldn’t believe that it was him, I never thought he would do something like that to me.”
She said, “Today’s youth is not like the youth of the past. When we were growing up we could sleep with the doors open but today you can’t do that. I am scared of the youth. I am not safe even in my own home. Every night when I go to bed I pray to God to protect and watch over me,” she said.
She said she found it hard to forgive her grandson.
“It’s difficult. Even though he admitted the crime in court, I am happy that he is in jail,” she said.
DA councillor Hlengiwe Biyela who was part of a delegation that visited the woman on Wednesday said she first heard about the elderly woman’s ordeal on Saturday.
“I was heartbroken when I heard what had happened to her. What worries me is that her house is on top of a hill and I am afraid that she might fall.
We came here because we wanted to see for ourselves so that we can go and report her case to the municipality’s housing department.
“We will try and put pressure on the municipality to give her an RDP house,” said Biyela.
