Many people around the world say that we do not do enough to honour our elderly. Just as well, then, that days such as National Gorgeous Grandma Day exist.
National Gorgeous Grandma Day is a time of the year in which we can celebrate the grannies in our lives. Everybody thinks that their grandma is gorgeous – so what could be better than an entire day devoted to acknowledging that fact? Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are well known, so National Gorgeous Grandma Day is a natural progression.
National Gorgeous Grandma Day is not just about celebrating those women who have the delight of being a grandma. It is about recognizing all women of a certain age, no matter whether they have grandchildren or not. After all, there are a lot of women who would love nothing more than to have grandchildren, yet they have not been able to.
Now that you know the day exists, hopefully, you are already making plans to spend it with your own gran. No matter what your grandmother prefers to do with her time, this is the day in which you can be sure she will have plenty of time to do it – and plenty of people willing to support her.
In order to understand the history of National Gorgeous Grandma Day, you need to know where the phrase ‘Gorgeous Grandma’ comes from. We have Alice Solomon to credit for this. She graduated from Wellesley College at the age of 50-years-old in 1984.
She felt that society viewed her and other females of her age or older as senior citizens. She believed that they were viewed as females who were no longer relevant or useful, and so she made it her mission to change this notion. This is when she came up with the idea of ‘Gorgeous Grandma.’ She recognized that the term ‘grandma’ was attributed to older females, irrespective of whether they were a grandmother or not.
Because of this, she decided that the best thing to do was to embrace the term, yet she decided to put the adjective ‘gorgeous’ in front of it. She thought that this created a ‘notice me’ and snappy image, which would be ideal for celebrating the older woman. She then decided to create National Gorgeous Grandma Day in an attempt to get rid of all of the typical stereotypes that surround older women, showing them that there is still a lot that they can do.
If your grandma is still with you, National Gorgeous Grandma Day is the perfect day for you to let her know just how special she is. Why not spend the day treating your grandma? You could go out for a delicious afternoon tea together. After all, what is more fun than some sweet treats, finger sandwiches, and a glass of bubbles?
You don’t have to spend money in order to make the day special for your grandma either. Simply spending time with her is going to be enough to put a smile on her face and make your grandma feel special. You could also cook something for your grandma. After all, while we’re not trying to stereotype, a lot of grandmothers do spend their time cooking.
This is because cooking is often a sign of love, and grandmothers love doing things for those close to them. So, why not repay the favor and cook a meal for your grandmother to show her how much you appreciate everything she does for you?
You could also enjoy a film with your grandma. There have been some pretty great films based on bad-ass grandparents! Of course, there is the film called ‘Grandma.’ this was released in 2015, and it will make you and your grandma laugh. It features Julia Garner, who plays Elle, a lesbian poet and widow. She is visited by her teenage granddaughter who needs money for an abortion.
The film watches the pair as they try to raise money by calling in favors from people in Elle’s past. The film has received rave reviews and it was actually listed in the top ten independent films of 2015 when it was released, so you can be sure that you and your grandma will have a good laugh watching it together. Get those snacks in and enjoy some special bonding time together!
If you don’t live near your grandma and you cannot spend time with her, why not make her a card? She will certainly appreciate that you have taken the time to make something especially for her. Make sure you include a note that lets your grandma know how much you are thinking about her and that you love her and miss her. If you’re someone who feels like they’re not very good with words, why not include a poem? You will find lots of help and inspiration online should you need it.
If you are a female who is aged 50 or older, you should celebrate National Gorgeous Grandma Day by doing the things that you really want to do. It does not matter how old you are; you can still achieve anything you want to. This is what Alice Solomon showed by graduating at the age of 50-years-old. So, take that class that you have always wanted to take, or do that activity that you have always wanted to do. Don’t let doubts or stereotypes hold you back. Life is for living, as they say!
You can also spend the day paying tribute to older women who have shown us that anything is possible. There are lots of incredible stories online about older women who are truly awesome at life! For example, we have Flo Meiler, who took up track and field when she was 60-years-old, showing you that you are never too old to go and reach your dreams. She then tried pole vault for the first time when she was 65-years-old. She now holds a ton of U.S. records for women in her age group, as well as world records. Why not spend some time reading up on her accomplishments?
Not only will you be astonished, but we are sure that this will inspire you to achieve your dreams too. There are many other stories like this whereby incredible women have shown the rest of us that it is never too late to make a difference and achieve those life goals! We also love the story of Dorothy Custer, who is the oldest person to leap off a bridge 500 feet above the Snake River. In fact, this is how she spent her 102nd birthday!

Not that you need an occasion to celebrate hot grandmas, but we’ve got one: July 23 is National Gorgeous Grandma Day.
Indeed, celebs seem to have been priming us for the holiday with sexy Instagram snaps. Martha Stewart, a 78-year-old grandmother of two, posted a pouty photo of herself wearing icy lipstick and eyeshadow in her pool, and earned more than 147,000 likes and comments praising her as a “queen.”
And actresses Susan Lucci, 73, and Jane Seymour, 69, sent out steamy swimsuit snaps earlier this month. “All My Chlidren” star Lucci, who has four grandkids, wore a sleek, black one-piece she first donned in a 2018 photoshoot for Harper’s Bazaar . “I feel as good now as I ever did in my 20s and 30s, maybe even better physically,” she said at the time.
And Seymour, a former Bond Girl and a grandma of six, posed confidently in a scarlet strapless suit by the pool in Malibu.
Today, The Post celebrates a handful of bodacious bubbes from all over the country who are sizzling this summer.
“Some people think I’m the mom of my 17-year-old grandson,” said Feinberg, a longtime Upper East Sider and grandmother of four who’s been married for 31 years to her second husband.
During al fresco breakfasts at the Mark Hotel, Feinberg wears her leather shorts, heels and signature sunglasses and watches the reaction. “Heads still turn,” said the lifelong fashionista and former handbag designer.
“Today, I feel better and sexier than ever. I’m so sure of who I am and sure of my look,” she said. “I dress as young as my 12- and 14-year-old granddaughters, who want to borrow my clothes and love to shop with me.”
Despite her love of fashion, she’s not a girly-girl: A 30-year Knicks season ticket holder, Feinberg says people are often impressed with her sports know-how.
And she’s got moves: “All four grandkids say I’m cool and sexy, but I still play basketball and teach them to tango.”
The grandmother of three and Mexico native modeled in her teens, but “she’s every bit as sexy now,” said her son Antonio Estrada, who is a fashion designer. “She wears bikinis and crop tops. She’s a smoke show.”
The single mother of five, who had her first child at 17, devoted her life to her children. “She’s finally living in her 50s,” added Estrada of his beauty-queen mom, who still enters local pageants.
Martinez’s routine would make most millennials blush: She wakes up at 5 a.m. and climbs San Diego’s San Miguel Mountain for four hours a day, five days a week. For Martinez, getting older isn’t a punishment. “The more I age, the more beautiful I feel. I feel more beautiful on every birthday,” she said. “I don’t limit myself based on my age.”
A self-described “bon vivant,” the jazz blues singer, who lives in Chelsea, has no trouble keeping up with her granddaughter Ava, 6. “I’ve taught her how to skateboard. I did it when I was a kid and when I bought her her first one, I bought myself one, too,” Friedewald said, adding, “I’m kind of a young grandma.”
Her fountain-of-youth secret? “I drink tons of water and always have. It’s so important to flush out the toxins,” said Friedewald, who normally works out about 20 hours a week — she’s also a personal trainer who sees private clients — and loves to bike ride around the city with Ava.
“I put her on the back seat of my bike and we go.”
“I feel sexier and more focused as a grandmother,” said Stokes, a mother of three who lives in Atlanta and has a 5-year-old granddaughter.
The flamboyant and outgoing travel blogger, who is vacationing in Jamaica, admitted that her 28-year-old daughter is her “opposite — no visible tattoos and very soft-spoken. No one believes she’s my child.” She also has a 31-year-old son who people assume is her husband when they’re out together. “People are shocked” when they find out she’s his mom.
Being a grandma has also upped her swagger. “Since I was 15, I had chores, diaper bags, purses and car seats all the time,” she said. “I feel younger now; I’ve learned how to sway with a sexy walk in my old age, hands free.”
The Great Neck, LI, resident earned the nickname “Sexygrandi,” a play on her name and her status as grandma to her 1-year-old grandson, whom she loves “ more than anything in the world.”
“I’m always a party girl,” she said. “I’m always the first on the dance floor for a wedding or bat mitzvah.”
And Luxenberg’s home is turning into quite the scene: Her entire family moved in during lockdown, swelling her two-person household — she lives with her husband of 35 years — to eight.
“She’s wild, fun and super kind,” said friend Kim Towers, owner of Runway Couture dress shop in Bellmore, LI, who’s made dozens of couture dresses for her. ”She’s Long Island’s version of Carrie Bradshaw. She’s totally glam and has a grand personality, too.”
Luxenberg said she’s hit her stride at 60. “I take more risks now,” she said. “I’m confident. I’m not afraid to get what I want.”
