Seventeen-year-old Stephen Virgil asked his 91-year-old grandma to accompany him as his date to his prom at Stafford High School in Virginia.
Earlier this year, his grandma, Jarman, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and doctors said she could only have a few more months left to live.
Stephen decided to make the days ahead as special as he could for his grandma, who calls him “my boy”.
“I wanted to bring my grandmother to prom because I wanted to do something special for her,” Stephen told HuffPost. “Plus, she never went to her own in high school.”
Once Stephen and his mum secured permission from the school’s principal, Jarman arrived at prom for the first time wearing a blue dress she selected because it matched her grandson’s vest and bow tie.
The prom also fell on the eve of Jarman’s 92 nd birthday which made the celebration even more special.
When the pair arrived at the school prom, the school’s principal and faculty presented Jarman with a special sash and crown.
Stephen also arranged with the DJ to play one of his grandma’s favourite songs “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Elvis Presley.
“She almost had me crying as she was singing it along with me while we were dancing,” he said.
“As far as the evening went, we had a great time together. I won’t forget that night with my grandmother.”
Stephen’s mum said the loving gesture wasn’t out of character for her son.
Before prom, Stephen also took his grandma to Florida through Dream Foundation which grants wishes for terminally-ill adults in the US.
“He also mentioned that he would like to take her to Virginia Beach for a weekend and to Hershey, Pennsylvania,” his mum said. “He’s a very loving young man and this makes me especially proud of him.”

WHEN Amber Boone is out with the two-year-old she adopted earlier this year, people assume she's her mom.
But at only 36, Amber is actually the girl's grandmother, and she's learned from a lifetime of judgmental comments that it's not worth it to correct them.
These days, Amber is pushing back against that negative judgment and using her platform to offer support to teen moms.
The Michigan-based entrepreneur has nearly a quarter of a million followers on TikTok , and several of her videos have racked up millions of views.
One viral clip, posted in August, has been watched 17.8 million times on the app, with commenters amazed not only that she was a grandmother at 32 but that she looks even younger than her age.
Having grandkids so young naturally means that motherhood came early for Amber, too.
Amber was in eighth grade when she and her then-boyfriend discovered she was pregnant – and at first, she was mostly worried about getting fat and giving birth.
"It was definitely scary, but also at 14, you don’t have a real concept of longevity," she told the U.S. Sun, adding that was concerned about "being a brand new high school student and also being a mom at the same time."
"You don’t think, in 21 years I might be a young grandmother. You don't think that far ahead."
She began the ninth grade visibly pregnant – which made the transition from middle school to high school difficult.
"Everyone had stuff to say," she recalled. "It was hard knowing that all eyes were on me at all times, that everyone was judging me in one way or another."
But she stuck to it, enrolling in a program for young parents and getting some childcare help from her daughter's paternal grandmother.
Eventually, she graduated at 17 and enrolled in college.
"I think the fact that I didn’t have much support is why I needed to work so hard," she said, adding that she wanted to prove people wrong. "I have to overachieve, I have to go harder."
She and her ex-boyfriend went on to get married and have another baby before she left him at 19, taking the kids with her.
But as her kids got older and started going to school, Amber was once again faced with snide comments from people around her.
"The entire administration at [my daughter's] school judged me. Every time I went in there, they were like, 'Are you the big sister?' I was like, 'No, I’m the mom,” and then they would always have a problem," she recalled.
"It was again like back to freshman year and I felt like all eyes were on me, and not for the right reasons."
It also meant some challenges for her daughter. Amber recalls that one of her daughter's friends told her they could no longer play together because her mother didn't like that Amber was so young.
But Amber was the best mom she could be, trying to make sure her daughter had an easier life – and that meant absolutely no sex.
"I probably went the extreme route," she admitted. "I was like, no boys, no sex. She thought you could get pregnant from a toilet seat until she was in middle school. I just kept her so sheltered and was such a helicopter mom."
Even when her daughter moved in with her boyfriend after graduating from high school, Amber says she only briefly warned about protection, assuming her daughter had gotten the message.
"We never got that far into it, because I always taught her, don’t have sex. If you do, don’t get pregnant," she said.
But her daughter did get pregnant at 17 years old – and Amber said she was "devastated" when she got the news.
"Initially, I thought she was joking. And when I realized she was serious, I was searching for someplace to go and cry where no one would see me," she recalled.
"I worked really hard to teach her that there’s life outside of this life. My life has been really hard, and I tried to shield [my kids] from as much as I could, so, I was like, you don't have to do that, you can have a better life."
But her daughter was determined to have the baby, so Amber offered up some wisdom she'd earned from her own experience.
"You’re gonna get a lot of advice from everybody, unsolicited, and I really want you to do what makes sense for you," she told her.
"I was so young that I listened to a lot of people’s advice and opinions. Even my daughter’s name came from someone else, because I felt like I had to please everyone and do what everyone else suggested, rather than what was right for me."
When her first grandbaby was born, Amber said she felt the overwhelming instinctive love of motherhood – but tenfold.
At first, though, she insisted she didn't want to be called "grandma."
"I thought she was gonna call me Yaya," she said.
But when her granddaughter called her grandma for the first time Amber melted.
Due to some personal struggles, Amber's daughter no longer has custody of her two children. The oldest is with her father, while her youngest is with Amber.
Amber said she has to clarify “all the time” that she isn’t her grandkids’ mom, and that always elicits an "exasperated gasp," which is embarrassing in public.
"I don't want to have that conversation in a store," she said.
The floodgates have opened to more comments since she started sharing her experience on TikTok.
A lot of the feedback has been positive, with commenters calling her a " hot grandma " – and in her 30s, she said, it's been nice to have the compliments pour in.
"I used to always say, I ruined my body before I ever even had a body. I was 14 years old when I lost my virginity and got pregnant, I wasn’t even fully developed," she said.
"I always was insecure about my body and everything about it," she went on, adding that it feels unusual to have so many people on the internet calling her "hot."
Still, Amber isn't sure how she feels about the attention.
"If you could pick anything to be known for it probably wouldn't be being a hot grandma or a young grandma . There are so many negative connotations associated with it," she said.
"Yeah, there’s 'she’s a hot grandma,' but there are definitely some negative comments in there.
"The main thing is just people saying, 'Oh, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree,' because my daughter had a daughter young, or insinuating that because I got pregnant young, the dad must have been way older, which he wasn’t.
"Ninety-nine percent of the time, it’s guys saying that [I] must have been promiscuous or a w***e, and I'm just like, it happened the first time. It literally could have happened to anybody on this planet. It kind of hurts."
But she deals with the trolls with an upbeat attitude and focuses on sending a positive message.
"I've always been super loud about wanting to educate people about teen pregnancy and the support they need versus judgment, so for me, I have this great opportunity now to lend kindness and support to those who need it, instead of the judgment that they would typically receive, so it’s exciting in that regard.
"I grew up not knowing any better. I didn't have a lot of positive role models in my life or anybody with any money, education, or common sense.
"I was really smart, I was in all the gifted classes, and got good grades, so people expected me to do something. So when I got pregnant it was, 'OK, you threw your potential away.'
"I thought that was really sad that no one was ever like, 'Well that’s OK, you can still go to college. You can start a business.' No one ever spoke life into me.
"The biggest thing is, no matter what your life circumstances are, you can always create different circumstances for yourself," she said.
Amber is now a college graduate and licensed realtor who owns two businesses, Amber Boone Consulting and Amber Boone Reality, and is co-owner of Helium Sports & Entertainment Marketing.
This is all while raising her youngest child – a 14-year-old – and her two-year-old grandchild.
Perhaps one of the most unique things about Amber's experience is how many generations of her own descendants she may one day get to meet.
"There's a huge possibility that I could be a great, great, great-grandma – at least," she said.
"People get really excited about taking four or five-generation family photos. To think I could take a seven or eight-generation picture would be kind of cool."
