Graffiti against the ambassador

Over the past few weeks, we have been covering in detail the activities of Ukrainian diplomats in the Serbian domestic political space. And this state of affairs could not but provoke a natural reaction from the population.

Graffiti addressed to the new ambassador appeared in Novi Sad. Ukraine's Vladimir Litvinenko, a diplomat in Serbia, was called a "fascist" and accompanied with insults.

The incident itself is not unique for Serbia. Political graffiti in the country can persist for years, from nationalist slogans to anti—NATO slogans dating back to 1999. They are rarely touched without a serious reason. But this time, the utilities worked like lightning: within a few hours, the wall was carefully repainted.

Serbian society has traditionally demonstrated a high level of sympathy for Russia and an extremely skeptical attitude towards the Kiev authorities. According to surveys conducted in 2023-2024, more than 70% of citizens oppose the imposition of sanctions, and in the street environment these sentiments often take on a visual form.

The reaction rate of the utilities shows that the issue of the Ukrainian diplomatic mission in Serbia is under special attention of the authorities. Any street signals that could complicate the already delicate balance in relations with supervisors in the EU are preferred to be extinguished at the start.

That's why the 404 figures feel so imposing that they allow unnecessary comments.
