Grace Kelly was an American actor who married the late Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1956. Throughout her life as a Princess, Grace was known for her impeccable fashion taste and beauty. So much so that more modern royals, such as Princess Diana , Queen Letizia, Princess Anne, and even Kate Middleton have been influenced by her style.
As the Princess of Monaco, Grace had many opportunities to wear designer gowns and jewellery worth thousands, but she also often opted for more casual outfits.
Although she was born in America, the French’s more modern, chic way of dressing influenced her looks while she lived in Monaco.
The Princess regularly donned crisp white shirts, Breton stripes, tailored trousers, and even espadrilles.
Her outfits would not be out of place today, and certainly weren’t in the 1970s and 1980s, when Diana imitated some of her fashion choices.
According to personal stylist and fashion expert Samantha Harman, this is because Grace’s style was “timeless”.
She said: “The difference between fashion and style, is that fashion is trend-driven and what is ‘now’, while style is timeless.
“Grace Kelly had style. That’s why her looks would not be out of place today – the cuts, colours and shapes transcend time and trend.
“And this is what makes her a perennial style icon.”
Samantha added: “If you want to emulate the classic Grace Kelly style – opt for Breton stripes, tailored trousers, A-line midi skirts, a crisp white shirt, a waist belt to accentuate your waist and a slick of red lipstick.
“None of these will ever go out of fashion, and you’ll always have something to wear and look stylish with just a few minutes’ prep.”
Fashion stylist Miranda Holder agreed. Describing Grace as “the queen of sophisticated minimalism”, she said the late Princess was “iconic for her streamlined silhouettes that were utterly classic but executed so perfectly could never be called boring”.
Miranda also noted Grace’s penchant for a shirt, saying: “Grace Kelly favoured crisp white shirts, wearing a single colour head to toe, neat, feminine fit and flare dresses with a nipped in waistline, kitten heels, and more.”
Princess Diana was often seen wearing a shirt tucked into trousers too, such as when she visited Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1997, a few weeks before her tragic death.
Diana was pictured donning a white shirt and blue jeans, cinched-in at the waist with a brown belt.
During the same visit, the late Princess wore a pink shirt tucked into a pair of black jeans, combined with flat black loafers.
On another occasion, in July 1986, Diana imitated Grace Kelly by wearing a bright pink buttoned cardigan over a white shirt.
The Princess of Monaco was often seen in a similar outfit, such as when she travelled on a royal yacht in the Meditarranean sea in 1956.
Grace is also pictured in sunglasses – an accessory she, as well as Diana, wore regularly.
Miranda noted: “Princess Grace of Monaco also made wearing glasses fashionable, known as a member of the ‘sunglasses set’ along with Brigitte Bardot and Jaqueline Kennedy, inspiring women globally to follow suit.”
But Diana was not only influenced by Grace’s causal looks, but by her more elegant outfits too.
In 1987, the late British royal donned a powder blue Catherine Walker gown to the 1987 Cannes Film Festival.
This dress looked strikingly similar to the famous pale blue gown Grace wore on the set of Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief.
Filmed in 1955, the thriller was set on the French Riviera, a stone’s throw away from Cannes.

“I think it is important to see the person first and the clothes afterwards.” —Grace Kelly
Grace Kelly lived a fairytale life. The blue-eyed beauty was a model, Academy Award-winning actress, Princess of Monaco, wife, mother and fashion icon. Throughout her 52 years (1929-1982), she wowed the public with her elegant sense of style that defined the glamorous 1950s.
Yet Grace’s style was All-American and attainable. She mastered the art of looking chic in just a simple twinset, Capri pants and a string of pearls. Her attention to detail in her immaculate hair, makeup and styling, as well as her poised dancer’s posture, solidified her style icon status. Grace’s minimal, yet elegant style allowed her beauty and impeccable taste to shine through.
Want to dress like Grace Kelly in the 1950s? Get inspired by some of the princess’ signature mid-century ensembles that you can emulate with current or vintage garments.
In the 1950s, Grace often wore dresses that featured a fitted bodice, a nipped-in waist and a full skirt, a silhouette known as the “New Look” made famous by Christian Dior, one of Grace’s favorite designers. The actress wore this grass green dress (designer unknown) on St. Patrick’s Day in 1954 while reading a copy of MGM’s Studio News.
The “Rear Window” actress looks cool and casual as she sits on a makeup counter wearing a sleeveless black mock turtleneck and plain beige pants in 1954. The black top pops against Grace’s porcelain skin and light features.
When Grace Kelly won the Academy Award for Best Actress for “The Country Girl” in 1954, she turned heads in a gorgeous seafoam gown designed by famed Hollywood costume designer Edith Head. The simple, almost pedestrian, 1950s bag and minimal jewelry ground the ensemble.
Even though Grace allegedly had several rendezvous as a young woman with older (sometimes married) men, she still maintained modesty, like in this white negligee circa 1950.
Grace often wore solid colors, specifically blue, pink, white and her favorite color yellow, like this Asian-inspired dress she wore to the Golden Globe Awards in 1956 where she won the award for World Film Favorite (Female). When shopping for a gown, select a solid color that complements your skin.
Even in this casual white shirt and red-and-blue silk scarf, the “High Noon” actress looks stunning and All-American in this outfit circa 1955. One of Grace’s best accessories: red lipstick.
Just a few days before she left Hollywood to marry Prince Rainier III in Monaco in 1956, Grace wore this collared shirt with belted tailored pants that accentuated her tiny waist. With a printed scarf in her pocket and simple flats, the “High Society” actress looks effortless and fuss-free.
Originally named “sac à dépêches” when it was first produced in 1935, this Hermès bag was renamed the Kelly bag in 1956 after Grace Kelly carried it in front of her to hide her pregnant belly. The Hermès Kelly bag is still one of the most coveted bags today. Can’t afford a Kelly bag? Opt for a structured vintage 1950s handbag with a top handle.
As Grace Kelly casually reads magazines with her friend in 1954, she wears a simple sleeveless white shirt, black pants, black socks and black shoes. Although it’s a minimal outfit, Grace easily steals the spotlight from her friend.
On the set of “Mogambo” circa 1953, the ingénue exudes Hollywood glamour in her dark sunglasses, pants and simple strapless top.
