If you're a trumpet player who wants some good practice and has a jazz craze like I do, this book is perfect for you. Every single damn song In this book is a jam and a half. Even myself, who has a range up to high E above the staff on a good day, can play 90% of the stuff in here. 100% if you bring stuff down an octave, which you def should and the book tells you to as well. The runs are so satisfying to play once you have them under your fingers, but they're not easy by any means. So stop reading this stupid review, scroll up, and buy this right now!!!!! Also If you're reading this gordon I love you
Just got this book/CD and am very disappointed, certainly not in the playing itself, which is great, but in the "play along" aspect. A modern play along CD should consist of two versions of each track, one a full version, with the full ensemble and one with the ensemble minus the instrument that is "playing along". This package does consist of two versions of each track. However, one is a "demo" version, which is just a minute or so of the piece. In the CD I received, the other track is a full version but with the play along instrument (in this case lead trumpet) included in the recording! Again, this is not a play along. Is the wrong CD included? The CD label does say "trumpet" on it, but the first trumpet part is clearly heard on the play along tracks.
I had been looking for this book to keep up my chops. I am glad I was able to find it
I absolutely love "Count Bubba's Revenge", but I still wish "Count Bubba" was included along with/instead of Revenge. Both are great tunes, though.

Join the Phat band
This is an interesting music book with accompanying cd. The sheet music is for the first trumpet part and enables you to play along with the cd accompaniment as if you were in the Big Phat Band yourself. There are very interesting notes from the trumpet players in the band about each track, explaining how they actually played the parts which varies in style with the printed music in a few places. If you are in a big band and want extra practice then this is a great product. It is a shame that the music is taken from different albums, but that is probably a marketing ploy to encourage you to buy the full albums.

Gordon L. Goodwin (born 1954) is an American pianist, saxophonist, composer, arranger, and conductor. He is the leader of Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band . He has won four Grammy Awards and three Daytime Emmy Awards, and has received over twenty Grammy nominations for his compositions and arrangements.
Gordon Goodwin was born in Wichita , Kansas. [1] He wrote his first big band chart, called "Hang Loose", when he was in the 7th grade. He continued his musical education at Cal State Northridge with Joel Leach and Bill Calkins. Following graduation from college, Goodwin was employed as a musician at the Disneyland theme park in Anaheim, California. Subsequently, Disney approached him to write a musical show featuring past and present Mouseketeers , including Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera . [2] Since then, Goodwin has risen to prominence in the American studio music scene with his big band, The Big Phat Band . [3] [1] He has written and worked with artists like Ray Charles, Christina Aguilera, Johnny Mathis, John Williams, Natalie Cole, David Foster, Sarah Vaughan, Mel Torme, Leslie Odom Jr, Idina Menzel, Lang Lang, and Quincy Jones, to name a few. Goodwin is the host of a nationally syndicated jazz radio program called Phat Tracks with Gordon Goodwin , also airing weekends on KSDS, San Diego’s 88.3 FM.
Goodwin has received many individual awards, including a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement for his work on the feature film The Incredibles . [1]
