Google Stadia Is Shutting Down, Refunds Incoming
Jack BrownStadia will finally close down in January 2023, after a long time of waiting. Phil Harrison, VP and GM of Stadia, said that the service failed to "gain traction with users." Customers will get full refunds for everything they bought from Stadia, including hardware and software.

This news doesn't shock us. The technology behind Stadia is amazing, and cloud gaming wouldn't be as popular as it is today if Stadia hadn't been made. But Google did a bad job of maintaining and curating this service.
In-house development of Stadia games stopped early in 2021. A year earlier, when Cyberpunk 2077 came out, Google didn't make the most of it. This game, which was unplayable on consoles but worked fine on Stadia, should have made Stadia a household name.
Also, Google plans to shut down Stadia completely on January 18, 2023. If Google doesn't meet this deadline, the service might last a little bit longer. You can't buy games or DLC through Stadia anymore as of today.
The good news is that Google will refund all Google Store purchases of Stadia hardware. It will also give back any games or DLC that were bought through the Stadia service. Your refund instructions will be posted on Google's Help Page at a later date. (Note that you can't get a refund for a Stadia Pro subscription.)
It was great to get to know you, Stadia. You had a lot of potentials, but like most Google services, you were born in neglect.
How to Get Google Stadia Refunds
Google also won't require people to send back hardware in order to get a refund. But if you bought the hardware from a store other than Google, like Best Buy, Google won't give you a refund. Only purchases made on the Google Store can be returned. Users also shouldn't go to a physical Google Store because these stores won't be able to handle the requests.
Google will not give refunds for Stadia Pro subscriptions, which is something else to keep in mind. So, if you're still signed up but no longer want to spend that money every month, make sure to cancel your subscription. If you want to keep using Stadia until it shuts down in January, you can still use the service's "perks" until the day it closes.
But even though Stadia is no longer around, the technology that makes the streaming service work won't go away. Google has already said it wants to use it as a Google Cloud technology and maybe as a way to run games on devices with less power. So, Google is shutting down Stadia, but the technology may show up in other apps and services in the future.
The fact that Google Stadia is going to close down soon is not a surprise. There have been rumors for a while that the service will end. Since Google stopped making games for Stadia in 2019, and even before that, many people saw what was coming. As people wait for Stadia to shut down, it is strongly suggested that they don't buy anything else on the streaming service.
