History

The origin of golf is unknown. Some scholars argue that the game dates back to 2600 B.C. Egyptian tomb paintings show people playing a game of hitting round objects on the ground with devices like hockey sticks. Other historians argue that the sport originated in the first century B.C. from a game known as Paganika, in which participants hit leather balls full of feathers. These authorities say that as the Romans conquered most of Western Europe, they brought the Paganica game and eventually developed into modern golf.

Jack Nicklaus (1940–)

Jack Nicklaus (Golden Bear) started playing golf at the age of 10, and at the age of 13, he had three handicaps. He joined the Professional Golfers' Association (USPGA) in 1961.

Golf fans loved to argue who was the "best golfer of all time"—Jack Nicklaus or Arnold Palmer. They didn't compete with each other very often, but when they did, the game didn't disappoint. 1962 was Palmer/Niclaus' first game, and Nicklaus won the playoffs and took the U.S. Open Championship away from Palmer. This made Nicklaus an enemy of the vocal "Arnie's Army" Palmer fans. Nicklaus was able to maintain his concentration and persevere throughout his career while fans booed him.

Nicklaus finished the 1960s with 30 wins. He added 36 championships in the next decade and won the Masters Tournament in 1975. In 1986, at the age of 46, Nicklaus became the oldest player to win the Masters.

-Bobby Jones Says
