I have a pair of IRD Audio monos, but I want a tonally richer sound with more air and space and I think tubes are the way to go. But I don't have a lot of money to throw at the amps initially, so I am looking at the Golden Tube SE40s.

Closest I can think of is "Golden Tube" or "Golden Tube Audio". They are now out of business but made amps and pre-amps - I own a Golden Tube Audio 300BSET.

I have checked out the Golden Tube Audio group on Yahoo and other people are using there SE-85's without failing, and they talk about the high voltages (715 volts) to the screens, so I wonder why mine will not stay working?
Your best bet for the Se-40 is join the yahoo golden tube audio group, I have 2 se-40's have gone through both with the older soniccraft stuff an added my own flavor of mods/caps/resistors but it's been a while so I would not be very upto the task of telling you exactly what to replace.
