The Golden Girls is based on the lives and interactions of four older women who have all been divorced/widowed, and are now roommates. Dorothy's main goal during the series is to find a companion she can relate to while her mother Sophia adds her comical outlook and frequent "Picture This" stories. Rose's St. Olaf-ness makes her a little corny but lovable. One thing that changes nearly every episode is whom Blanche is courting.—John W. Hale
It was not originally scripted for Blanche to have a Southern accent. Instead, it was Rue McClanahan's idea to do so.
Dorothy and Stan got married because Dorothy got pregnant and they were married for 38 years. In one episode, they mention that Michael was the one conceived first, yet even though his age changes in different episodes, he's always in his twenties when he should really be in his early forties.
Rose: I don't think lying is really a good idea. I once cut school and that proved very bad.
Dorothy: Oh, Rose. We've all cut school. It couldn't have been that bad.
Rose: Oh, yes it was. That was the day they taught EVERYTHING.
Dorothy: The final piece of the puzzle.
Season 1 (1985-1986) had a slightly different opening sequence consisting of a different shot of the city behind the show's title, one different clip in-between the credits for 'Beatrice Arthur' and Betty White, and a different clip behind the credit for Rue McClanahan. This open was replaced with the 1986 opening for syndication. The original opening has been restored to the season 1 DVD release.
NBC was already a monster by 1985 thanks to programs like "The Cosby Show", "Cheers" and "L.A. Law" (all part of that unbeatable Thursday lineup). In 1985 it appeared that Beatrice Arthur (who struck gold with "Maude", a spin-off of "All in the Family") was going back to television in a new show called "The Golden Girls". Along with Arthur (a smart-mouthed Brooklyn native) was her old-world Sicilian mother (Estelle Getty), a bubble-headed Minnesota native (Betty White) and a sex-crazed belle from Georgia (Rue McClanahan). This quartet of actresses would create the finest core of performers to ever star in a television series. "The Golden Girls", unlike "Cheers", was a hit from its first episode. It dominated with vigor and spunk on Saturday nights. NBC was worried that the show would never find an audience big enough to make a dent in the ratings, but for a time "The Golden Girls" was as excellent as anything else the networks had to offer. The four women, all obviously over 50, lived, laughed and cried together in Miami for nearly a decade from 1985 to 1992. The series pushed the envelope on everything that dominated headlines during its run (AIDS, homosexuality, sexism, ageism, political unrest, abortion and an endless list of other topics too long to go into at length). The episodes went for comedy, but usually almost always had a deep meaning to them about love and friendship. All four actresses shared the spotlight equally for the most part. Arthur and McClanahan had hit gold with "Maude" and White had been along seemingly at the advent of television programming. Getty was relatively unknown, but fit in well with more-established performers immediately (her character got away with more than the others as she was written as a lady who had suffered a major stroke which affected the relationship between what she said and thought). Herb Edelman (who made a name for himself in "The Odd Couple") was always a consistent element as Arthur's two-timing ex-husband and Harold Gould (who was a key player in "The Sting") also became a fixture during the series' latter episodes as White's love interest. Like all good things though, "The Golden Girls" began to slowly lose their edge and appeal by the early-1990s. Time slot changes and constant contract re-negotiations ended the series far too early. Arthur's want to leave the show by 1992 would ultimately kill the program. CBS attempted to bring the other three back with "The Golden Palace", but that series never found its legs without Arthur. 5 stars out of 5.

One of the Golden Girls found herself hitched in the most unexpected way in the series finale of the hit sitcom.
By Zachary Guida Published May 05, 2021
The hit NBC sitcom The Golden Girls originally aired from 1985 to 1992, becoming a staple of NBC's Saturday night line-up with no equal on rival networks. The crazy antics of four older women living together in a Miami home enchanted audiences for seven seasons before finally coming to a close with the series finale.
The show followed Rose (Betty White), Blanche (Rue McClanahan), Dorothy (Bea Arthur) and Sophia (Estelle Getty) as they dealt with day-to-day life while coping with the struggles of being older women. Episodes were centered on multiple topics, with a few about the women's current love life (or lack thereof), their past relationships/marriages, their children and their dependence on one another as friends and family. The series finale focused on all these topics to wrap up the story and set up for the short-lived sequel The Golden Palace.
Throughout Golden Girls, Dorothy, like her fellow housemates, navigated the struggles of dating as an older woman. In the series finale, "One Flew Out of the Cuckoo's Nest," Blanche's Uncle Lucas comes to visit the same day Blanche has a date. She decides to dump her uncle on Dorothy, with Dorothy under the impression that Blanche wrote flattering letters about Dorothy to her uncle. Initially, Dorothy and Lucas do not hit off. However, they learn Blanche lied to both of them about wanting to meet the other. They decide to trick Blanche for revenge by saying they fell madly in love and want to marry. The two stage a fake proposal in Blanche's home with Dorothy accepting.
Of course, this major change in the household has an effect on the other women. Sophia, Dorothy's mother, assumes she'll move in with Dorothy and Lucas until Blanche points out the couple may not want her with them. She dresses up as and speaks like a traditional American southern woman to try to gain Lucas' favor and move in with the couple. Rose also questions if she should leave the house and move in with her daughter.
Blanche reacts exactly as Dorothy and Lucas hoped, buying into their ruse and getting upset that the two are "getting married" and destroying the family the four women created. Over the course of the trick, Dorothy and Lucas realize they've developed actual feelings for one another and decide to marry for real. Blanche comes around to the relationship after accepting that their love is genuine.
Lucas agrees to let Sophia come live with him and Dorothy. The night before Dorothy's wedding, while trying to figure out how to say goodbye, Blanche and Sophia convince Rose to keep living with Blanche. The next day, Dorothy is on her way to her wedding in a limo only to learn her ex-husband Stan is the limo driver. He ultimately blesses Dorothy's new union and the two reconcile their past love for one another.
As she walks up the aisle, Dorothy realizes she has finally overcome her desperation and is marrying a man she truly loves, a core theme of her character throughout the course of Golden Girls. Dorothy and Lucas marry in a beautiful church ceremony with her friends and family there to celebrate with her.
Sophia ultimately decides to stay with Blanche and Rose, realizing Dorothy needs to be alone with her new husband and not have Sophia in their way. Having become a mother figure to Blanche and Rose, Sophia believes they still need her guidance. The mother-daughter relationship of Dorothy and Sophia was a key part of the show's dynamic, and the finale offers a satisfying goodbye between the two. After seven years of living together, the four women share a tear-jerking goodbye, with Dorothy comically coming back into the house two times after leaving to keep hugging the others. After she finally sets off, Rose, Blanche and Sophia embrace one last time as the story comes to a close.
The Golden Girls finale brought one of the greatest sitcoms of all time to an end while managing to focus on all the key elements that defined it. The relationship of the women was the driving force of the show and it's only right that it ended with a final goodbye between the four friends-turned-family.
