The Surfers Paradise man, 56, appeared in Southport Magistrates Court today, 19 April , over the importation. The investigation began in November after the Australian Border Force ABF allegedly found the illicit drugs in an air cargo consignment in Sydney, sent from the Philippines. The man was granted bail and is next due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on 3 July AFP Detective Superintendent Adrian Telfer said disrupting the supply of illicit drugs, including cocaine, was vital to combatting organised crime and reducing the harm to at-risk Australians. The NAGS is continuing its investigation into this importation and the potential uses of this substance. Further arrests have not been ruled out. By Jessica Lamb. ABC Gold Coast. Topic: Cocaine. A harmful banned painkiller has been found in cocaine samples. A harmful banned painkiller has been found in cocaine samples tested on the Gold Coast. Phenacetin was banned in Australia decades ago because of links to renal disease and cancer in long-term users. Drug testing service CheQpoint warns the substance could be in other batches across the country. A banned painkiller has been detected in cocaine on the Gold Coast and could be present across the country, according to a drug-testing service. Queensland drug checking service CheQpoint says phenacetin has been found in two samples of cocaine tested in its new Burleigh Heads facility that opened last month. Cameron Francis says the results mean phenacetin is likely present in cocaine beyond the Gold Coast. Chief executive Cameron Francis said, as well as its long-term health impacts, the banned substance also had short-term risks. Mr Francis said the symptoms of phenacetin poisoning could be hard to detect and warned health professionals to be on the lookout. Mr Francis said the results and restrictions on phenacetin in Australia meant the substance was likely cut into cocaine overseas. Bond University associate professor of pharmacology Treasure McGuire said the detections showed the value of free drug testing sites. She said harm-minimisation strategies like drug testing sites were important to educate 'potentially vulnerable citizens' about the risks of illicit substances. The Queensland LNP earlier this year said it does not support pill testing and would scrap it if elected in October. An AFP crime scenes member undertakes chemical testing. Supplied: AFP. In December , the Australian Federal Police sent out a public warning to drug users after phenacetin was detected in a seized cocaine haul. Mr Francis encouraged people to be honest with their doctors and reach out if they think they could be affected by side effects. CheQpoint has testing services in Brisbane open Fridays and the Gold Coast open Thursdays from 2pm to 6pm to anonymously test non-organic substances free of charge.
