Glutathione for Skin: Separating the Science From the Injection Clinics

EL TESSA

Glutathione has become the most marketed brightening ingredient in Pakistan, sold as serums, capsules, drips and injections. The science behind it is real but much narrower than the advertising suggests.

What it does in the body: glutathione is an antioxidant your cells already produce. In pigment biology it shifts melanin production toward pheomelanin, the lighter type, and away from eumelanin. That mechanism is genuine and is why the interest exists.

Topical glutathione is mild. It supports brightening as part of a routine that includes vitamin C and sunscreen. It is not a bleaching agent, it works over months, and used sensibly it is low risk.

Injectable glutathione is a different conversation. It is not approved for skin lightening by major regulators, doses used in clinics vary wildly, sterility in unregulated settings is a real danger, and reported risks include kidney and liver effects and severe skin reactions. Pakistan has no shortage of clinics offering it without medical supervision.

Oral supplements sit in the middle: poorly absorbed, modest evidence, generally safe. If you want to try, expect subtle results and give it three months.

The honest hierarchy for brightening in Pakistani sun is unglamorous: sunscreen first, vitamin C second, niacinamide or glutathione third, and patience through all of it. The detailed side effect breakdown is here: https://eltessa.com/blogs/news/glutathione-serum-side-effects-pakistan
