If you've spent quality time with teens lately, there's a good chance you've also spent some quality time with their phones. A new study released by the Pew Research Center called "Teens, Technology and Friendship" revealed some fascinating new media habits among the 13- to 17-year-old set. The study also captures the "social" aspect of social media, by qualifying each form of technology as "spending time with friends via [insert app here]". Communication in all forms, from old-fashioned phone calls to WhatsApp, count as a social activity in the study. Here are some of the highlights: · Fifty-five percent of teens spend time texting their friends every single day, and 49 percent say it's their first choice when it comes to contacting a close friend. · Girls are more into texting than boys, with 62 percent spending time messaging their friends every day compared with 48 percent of boys. · Instant messaging has probably dropped in popularity since the AIM years of our youth—27 percent of youth IM each other daily. · Teen girls are way more likely to unfollow and unfriend than teen boys, with 63 percent admitting to getting rid of an online connection vs. 53 percent of

A California judge recently ruled that abstinence-only sex education violates the state's Comprehensive Sexual Health & HIV/AIDS Prevention Act in that it is not, in fact, sex education at all. The act aims to provide students in California with "the knowledge and skills necessary" to prevent STDs and unwanted pregnancies, as well as encourage teens to "develop healthy attitudes" about body image, gender roles, sexual orientation, dating, and marriage. Telling students simply not to have sex? Not part of the program. In his decision, Fresno County Superior Court Judge Donald Black outlined violations to the law allegedly made by the Clover Unified School District. He specified several instances where the district was not in compliance with the act, including this example involving the sex education of ninth-graders: "The curriculum violated the act by failing the required STD and pregnancy prevention information, by promoting and reinforcing bias based in gender and sexual orientation, and by containing medically inaccurate information," wrote Black.
